In this video I go over the different things to look at when choosing a duck hunting shotgun. I mentioned different types to take a look at and told you what I recommend. Duck guns are a tool. Pick the tool that best suits your needs. Also remember that a gun is an investment. Don't go cheap and have to replace it a couple years later.

for an entry level/spare/beater shotgun the Mossberg Maverick 88 is by far the way to go. They run right about $200 and are just amazing. I've killed literally every game animal in Florida with it and does great for waterfowl.

I like the Mossberg 930 Pro Waterfowl 3' gun. You can also get the 935 in 3 1/2". It comes with shims to adjust the stock to the way you shoot. And is priced right for someone just getting started.

I use a Remington Versa Max and LOVE it, used it for trap shooting for years and use it for dove, ducks, geese, and turkey. Absolutely great it is pricey but it’s worth the investment by far the smoothest firing gun I’ve ever used for duck hunting. I’ve used a couple bennelis, berettas, brownings, Winchester’s, and the Versa max is the best

Always a great topic for discussion and you hit on some good ones that is for sure. Definitely the 12 gauge and in 3 inch chamber even if 3.5 but I only shoot 3s, and barrel length of 26-30. I actually have a Franchi Affinity in Left Hand one of the rare guns that come in LH and it is all black, very light weight and cycles anything from 2 3/4 low brass 7.5 shot to 3 in high brass BBs absolutely fine and is around the $700-$800 price range, it is part of the Benelli group of guns slotted above the Stoegers and below Benelli of course. Stoegers are fine and from the reviews I have seen they are reliable especially for that $500-$700 price point depending on if you get the M3000 or M3500 and black vs camo, but they are heavier and bulkier than my Franchi. The Winchester SX4s and SX3s (my buddy has had a SX3 for years and kills plenty of birds) is another great option for under 1k as you mentioned and the Beretta A300 Outlander as well. Pretty much every duck hunters dream gun if they had the $$$ would be the Benelli SB3s for 1800 dollars much more than the Stoeger that you said was a "little" less, even though they are 1k less, but that is okay. People will figure that out when they go to Cabela's or wherever and check it out. You were spot on with all the good solid easy to find pump actions as well from the Super Nova (I was wondering what happened to it) to the 870s and 500s. Nice little video, good job.

Personally have a Stoeger M3500, great gun. Only 'hiccup' is you must use heavy loads at first to break in the inertia system. Very good build quality. My dad trash talked me at first for not getting one of the 3 B's (browning, benelli, beretta), then after about 2 months of shooting mine at the range, he came home with a M3500. Family now has 3 Stoegers, couldn't complain at all. Inertia drive system is very simple to clean too.

I recently purchased a Benelli Super Black Eagle 2, because I could get it for a substantial discount as people are buying and stores want to stock the Super Black Eagle 3. While trying various shotguns in a store, the difference between the SBE and Stoeger 3500 was the SBE felt lighter and easier for me to swing. It may be the opposite for others and for me, the Remington Versa Max wasn't too far off the SBE3, but I couldn't get last year's model at a discount. ;)

Franchi Elite Inertia has the return spring on the magazine tube which helps guarantee the bolt is pulled up to stay in action so I see that as an advantage to keep the bolt from dropping out of action by accident.

I used a Remington 870 for years. I love it and how reliable they are. But having said that, I got tired of getting my brains beat out with the 3 inch rounds for duck hunting. I bought a Remington Versa Max as a replacement for the 870 and I have been VERY pleased with it. It is chambered for all three shell lengths and it cycles them all flawlessly. Plus, it was pretty affordable. With the store discount and the factory discount available at that time (2014), I got it for $889. I would definitely recommend the Versa Max because it is a good quality shotgun and it wont break the bank in the process.

Pull apart that trigger completely and clear off that sear on the trigger assembly. I go with the Mossberg 535 for the 3.5 inch is king for goose guns. $430 bucks for a camo wrap and a turkey barrel with fiber optic rifle sights, 28 inch fowl barrel, and an array or chokes. Shot a stoeger m3500 for 2 seasons I started to have some failure to feeds and jams with it after a year of owning it. Decided to sell it and bought a super black eagle 2 my 2nd trip out with it and I had two failure to feed issues. Continued to shoot it for 3 seasons each time out I could expect at least one problem to occur, finally got tired of shooting inertia driven guns so I sold my benelli and bought a beretta a400 xtreme so far very good gun over 100 rounds with it and not one problem yet. I know of alot of people that have good success with stoeger and benelli but I never really was impressed with either brand, especially for a $1700 shotgun it shouldn't have problems my second time out. I know theres alot of factors that go Into how reliable your shotgun is but I did everything right with those two guns and still had problems, hopefully other people have better luck than I did.

I have a 12g Winchester SXP 3 Pump with 3 1/2 chamber. Very rugged gun. Never have shoot 3 1/2 though. When I started hunting ducks I used a 20g Remington 870 3 inch shells and ive done just fine with it as well. VERY reliable gun. Anyone who is looking at getting a Winchester pump action tho, if you are used to a regular pump do not get the pump assist on your new gun. I did that and at first I had issues with getting used to cycling the shells, because with the pump assist it almost opens the action for you, but it doesnt quite open all the way.

Good gun to start out with is maybe a stoeger p3000. Picked it for only 200 bucks at Field and Stream. It doesn't have much of a recoil pad so you definitely feel all that 12 gauge kick, but for only 200 bucks you get a good shotgun that has benelli quality and even a chrome lined barrel.

Great advice, but I thought I'd add some input on buying a gun seeing as I've been shooting trap and skeet and hunting waterfowl since I was a little kid. You can find a used Beretta a400, a300, or a350 at Cabela's for a fairly reasonable price. The Winchester SXP is a great option especially if you can find one used. The Cabela's by my house had a couple SXPs in the $350-$400 range. I'd say new hunters shouldn't feel the need to buy a new gun, especially since you can find slightly used ones for a great price. My buddy shoots an 870 and he loves it. If you really want to buy a new gun without breaking the bank I'd definitely recommend the 870. I personally shoot a Beretta A400 Xplor that I got when I was just starting to get into target shooting. I'm hoping to get a Benelli M2 once I get rid of the A400.

I have a Stoeger p-3500 pump and a Winchester sxp, the Stoeger has a MUCH more smooth cycle than the Winchester and it has yet to fail me. I stagger different loads in it every time I hunt I use 3” BB, 3.5” 2 shot, and monarch 3” 2 shot. It chews up and spits out everything I feed it. It took a few hunts for me to get used to how it points but I like it better than my Winchester by far

The Benelli family tree is as follows (Imo): Benelli, franchi, stoeger. So the SBE, Affinity, and M3500 are all similar but at different price points, because they have different names attached to them. From what I've seen in my blinds, the affinity is basically an SBE that has a little less of the extras, and the M3500 is a stripped down no frills version. All are good guns but depends on your price range and what premium features you want.

I had a Winchester SXP which is a good pump the only thing is with that shotgun is when you fire a shot the slide will come back and eject a shell for you. It’s the only pump shot gun that does this. With that being said it is a little weird at first and takes some time getting used to. I just switched to my A5 Browning Wicked Wing bit have a couple more days to pick it up so I can’t wait! I told the lady that so wanted it chambered in 3.5” but after I left the gun shop I looked at my paperwork and she rang me up for 3” so that was kind of a bummer. But then on the upside I saved $100 - $200 and I don’t necessarily even shoot 3.5” all that much anyway so I wasn’t too upset. Also I got a killer deal on the gun it was $1700 out the door and everywhere else I look they Retail for just over that before taxes so all in all I’m happy. Also the gun comes with 3 extended chokes and has a 30” barrel so I should have no problem reaching out and folding Ducks and Geese! I’m so stoked and can’t wait for Duck season to come again!! Good video man

The mossberg 500 may just need a few springs replaced. Maybe even the extractors and the ejector. For 30 bucks, you’ll have a brand new mossy. I have a 600 AT from the early seventies, that was heavily used. I replaced the trigger spring, ejector, extractors, and the firing pin spring, and the gun functions like brand new. All for about a 30-40 dollar fix.

I've been rocking a stoeger M3000 for a few years now, and its been damn reliable. Trap shooting, duck hunting... anything. Never had an issue! I did go through the gun and clean, debur, and polish any two pieces of metal that slide against each other. And with the price tag, I wouldn't cry too hard if it got lost at the bottom of the lake or stolen. Started out with a mossberg 500, and it rusted CONSTANTLY, like no other. Switched to a remington 870 express, and hated it. Way too short of a gun for my 6'4" arse. Sold the others, then I went and picked up the M3000. Can't really justify getting something different at this point!

I shoot my brothers old Remington 870 and it's kinda beat up so I'm looking for a new gun and I'm thinking about the supernova. The Remington is a great gun by the way I would recommend it to someone that's just getting into hunting and it wont break the bank

Stoeger m3500 good duck and geese gun or turkey. BUT it gets heavy after a long day of hunting. Had a couple of jams but other then that its a good overall gun. I would Recommend it for new or experience shooter.

I have the franchi intensity 28” barrel chambered in 3.5 and love it. It’s cheaper than the sbe2 but still built way better than the stoger m3500. Also franchi is made by Benelli

Jager Hoeksema yes you are right. But what I’m getting at is the stamping on the franchi barrel and receiver say benelli.. they are using the same barrel on the sbe line. Not a beretta barrel or receiver

I’ve been looking at the Franchi Affinity 3.5 and that is in all build quality the same as the Benelli SBE III and M2(but the M2 isn’t a 3 1/2” gun). It’s around $500 less than the SBE III as well. I’ve used my 870 for the past 7 years and it’s time for an upgrade. Still works great but I finally want to try and a semi-auto.

I have been shooting my Stoeger M3500 for 6 duck seasons. It has been in all temperatures and all conditions. Never failed me one time. I would highly recommend it to anyone. It cycles 2 3/4 - 3 1/2 without any issues at all.

Look y'all the sx4 is a HOG from slugs to 3.5" to cheap dove loads I'm 500 plus rounds in her no jams no failure to feed plus the recoil with waterfowl loads are more of a push than a kick. The factory fullchoke that comes with the gun 🔥with waterfowl loads

Which would you say is better the sx4 by Winchester or the ranchi affinity 3? I’m looking at both of these and I’m not sure what to get? Is the sx4 a cheaper version of the browning Maxus and the affinity a cheaper version of the sbe? Any insight to this would be awesome!
