Finally someone who understands the characteristics of lenses and isn't just a bullshit merchant trying to sell shit. This is one of the best break downs of a lens I have seen, liked and subscribed. Keep up the great work.

Man you ran through your lens character preferences like a Michelin star chef, ordering a very specific meal at a restaurant. Simply brilliant and very informative breakdown of 'character' with real world examples and not just talk. Great video. Thank you.

Finally someone who doesn't blindly say "character" to talk about optical aberrations and flaws like a marketing department trying to sell you the "it's not a bug, it's a feature", very good and interesting explanation. Thanks a lot for such a real view on lenses. And this set is just amazing.

Thanks Jake! I keep getting more from this video every time I come back. Absolutely love the look of that Leica R Elmarit. Serious question: do you think we'll ever see auto focus lenses with the kind of character you're describing in this video? Thanks for the channel.

I picked up the Vespid 21, 40 and 75mm primes recently and have been really enjoying them. The image quality, color match and build quality are very good for their price point. To me, the image rendering has a “thickness” that I don’t get with photo lenses. The 40mm falls nicely between 35 and 50mm and I don’t miss either of them. I will likely get the 90mm macro and 16mm at some point.

Thickness is a great way to describe it actually. I have a hard time putting into words why I think the image looks so good. My favorites in the set are actually the 40 and the 75mm too, that’s funny

My favorite lenses are the Contax Zeiss. It's sharp, renders contrasts beautifully and CA doesn't bother me at all. 50mm is my favorite focal length at the moment.

I've got a few Rokinon primes and while they are by no means elite, I have been very pleased with how they look, especially stopped down, for getting a gentle vintage look to things. Debating whether to go with a photo or cinema zoom next due to doing more doc work, if I could get away with shooting primes constantly for docs I would though! Also, if you haven't seen Shogun, I think the lens choice would be right up your alley.

God damn you gave some of the best advice. “Don’t buy a kit just to have it on your shelf, buy one lens and try it to see how you like it” is some of the best advice I’ve ever heard. Your going to go very far in film making my friend. Good luck and God Bless.

We have a 5 lens kit...16, 21, 25, 40, 75.....is more than enough, and is an amazing FF and s35mm set. That 40mm is just stunning. Would love a 28mm in stead of the 25mm too. In the vintage cinemod, we are bulding a cinemoded Pentax K set (not takumar). 4/20, 2,8/24, 2/28, 2/35, 1,2/50, 1,8/85.

He end with buy what you need, and if you don’t want super sharp Sony like characteristics and Vespa primes are a solid option at around 1-2k each :)

Been enjoying nikon AI and pre AI vintage lenses. Not the best, but have some nice character, a cooler tone with nice rendition. I now have a 35mm f2.8 and 24mm f2.8 pre AI versions and a 50mm f2 AI. I also have a Helios 44-2 58mm f2 which is gorgeous on its own but sometimes I find it has a bit too character so I don't use it too much.

How is the chromatic aberration on those old Nikon lenses? I’ve always been curious about them
@petersonfilms-110 ай бұрын
@@jakehayden998 Not really sure tbh. I haven't pixel peeped to check. Overall I find the images pleasing and the chromatic aberration not distracting, but if I was to guess I think there is some light purple or blue fringing, especially wide open. My Nikons are f2.8 and f2 for their widest, so there aren't too crazy soft or filled with chromatic aberration.
