Love your channel and its content. I repotted 3 of my avocados with your method, and so far they are doing great. They were Hass, Fuerte, and Mexicola Grande. Drove from Antelope Valley all the way down to Gary's nursery to get his soil, and you are absolutely right, you can see the difference in the soil texture and its consistency. Always thumbs up from me. :-) Thank you for everything you do. We really do appreciate it.

I just up potted my Jan Boyce avocado tree that was in the Top Pot soil. The root growth and health was amazing. Lots of white roots going all the way to the edge of the pot.

Keep it up. I've been following these basic principles for the last few years and have also had great luck with my avocados. Just potted up a GWEN I bought from fourwinds nursery online the same way. I love Gary's top pot soil.

I also purchased avocados from Fourwinds. The pots are full of wood shreds and chips. Did you do the root wash before reporting to mineral soil? Any transplant shocks? Please share any advice you may have. Thank you.

Great video as always thanks! I did this exact procedure on a Fantastic avocado and all of the leaves fell off! I’m patiently nursing it back to health.🙏 not blaming just wanted to share. I’ve managed to kill three of five avocado trees to this point. Very difficult tree to grow in south Louisiana zone 9! Thanks again for your time and expertise!🙏

Great job! I heard you can put a 1/2-1 inch thick layer of sand to keep the perlite from floating up to the top of the container. I use a shifter to get the mulch out of the soil and then use that to top the containers or garden and it's amazing because its so fine and not heavy

Worm castings are composted organic matter. What would Gary say about mixing organic matter into your soil?
@TheElsinoreGardener
@TheElsinoreGardener 4 жыл бұрын
50sKid I only mix in the top 1/4 of the soil. Gary says add it on top and I agree on heavier compost. Try it. It all works it’s way down into the container when watering

Glad I found this page! Been doing a ton of research on repotting my avocados. Especially after my first one didn’t go well and only has 3 leafs. Being close to May, you think it’s a good idea to take it out and repot it using your method in hopes it can get it back on track? It’s a Mexicola grande. Also, What are some tips to getting air pockets out of ceramic pots. Pick it up and tap it down? Love the page!
@TheElsinoreGardener
@TheElsinoreGardener 2 жыл бұрын
I would always remove the wood chip soil if you want a long term healthy tree. I flood the soil with water and you could poke the soil with a stick to help air bubbles out. The weight of the water helps too.

@@TheElsinoreGardener update. I left the mexicola because it finally recovered and taking off! However, I repotted the hass and it’s not doing good. I did the whole method of washing away the commercial soil submerged like in the video and repotted in well draining soil. However the hass, dropped all of its leaves after a week and now getting some black tipped stems. First thing to mind is root rot, but how? The pot has a ton of holes, the dirt is legit, and I moisture meter the tree before watering. Totally confused on what is killing this tree. Any tips?

Some people say leave the root ball not disturbed or tree will die of shock. Have you lost tree after washing the roots? Some of comments here say trees losing lots of leaves afterwards. Please advise. Thanks

Just transplanted mine a week ago, changed the soil completely and soaked off the soil from the root ball (from the same nursery). Not sure if I didn't water it much after the transplanted, since when I mixed my sand, peat moss and perlite, it was pretty wet already. The leaves don't look too well to me, they are wilting and some brown. Any suggestion that you could provide?

The Elsinore Gardener- Yeah, I haven’t found any either. I was at Laguna Hills Nursery today. He just recently got in all of his avocado varieties. They have Carmen and Reed on clonal rootstock and about 12 varieties of avocado liners. I was able to special order the Sharwil avocado variety, but when I watched your video I was kind of shocked to see that you were able to find the J.B. avocado. That’s a pretty great find, even considering it was from La Verne Nursery that uses the worst soil to grow their trees in.

I just bought the exact avocado today at Green Thumb nursery in Canoga Park. There are three remaining JB trees at the store in 5-gallon container. The description from La Verne Nursery is “A ‘gourmet avocado’ that is not often found in stores, this richly favored, creamy-butter texture has a very small seed pit - with lots of flesh around it. Vigorous tree, blooms late (after frost are over) and sets fruits readily. Ripens late winter to July. Hardy to 26F.”

Garys says that its mostly pumice/sand/perlite/volcanic rock with only 5% biochar and 25% peat moss. He will tell you the exact recipe at his nursery and on his youtube videos. I make it myself when I have a TON of potting to do but mostly just buy his bags. Great stuff.
