You'll learn this technique naturally after you hit a dead end playing 16th notes the wrong way. Or at lest that's how it worked for me.

Me too, and honestly every other drummer I’ve discussed this with. Mostly it’s out of necessity when you run out of gas, your arm can’t play 16ths anymore, but you’re on stage and can’t stop and must figure it out.

yup. Although there ARE instances where the music calls for even 16ths on the hihat rather than accents. Usually you can play that with two hands though

This is hard to teach, it just happens eventually (years later in most cases). You can actually practice it on your lap. Use your fingers for one note and your palm for the 2nd. Hopefully that helps someone...😊

I got ALOT better at this and drumming in general by practicing with a small shaker in my left hand on the steering wheel while I drive (and blast music) I've been doing this since 2017, when I lost the privilege of having open access to a large hall to store and use my full array of music gear. I had to do something to keep up, and I was driving long distances at the time. I first tried putting a snare on my passenger seat but that got tiresome trying to move it around while driving so now I've just been always with the left hand shaker (I'm right handed) and sometimes a stick in the wheel (my steering wheel actually creates a decent thud if you hit it with the fat part of the stick and on 12 o clock position or 6 o clock position of the steering wheel... and also a decent "thwack" when you hit it with the skinny part of the stick and on the side of the wheel or 3 o clock. Now when I play drums (which is unfortunately a rarity lately) I pretty much have become an "open" position player or ambidextrous regarding which hand is in the hats or which is on the snare... Only thing is, now, my legs are way behind. Can't think of any practical ways to practice bass or double bass while driving! Hey, this is just what I did And still do ... Something I developed out of an unfortunate loss of a practice space, and overwhelming need to keep practicing. Do what you have to do, to keep doing you. There's more than one way to skin a cat, so to speak! Think outside the box!

This is generally how you'd play 16th notes in most settings, but don't discard the other method. Using the finger technique, you can get different sounds out of the hi-hat whilst still playing 16th notes. Times you'd use finger technique over this push and pull technique is if you play blast beats, and you're looking for a consistent dynamic across all your hits, or when you're playing dnb, when you're trying to emulate the sound of a drum machine. Don't discard any techniques, if there's something potentially interesting you can do with it, you should find a way to adapt the technique to help with longevity and the sound you want to go for/create! Be experimental! Evolve your sound! Evolve the sound of the music you play!

Hi Rick, While at Berklee, I studied with both Gary and Ed Kaspik at the same time; they were friends. Ed was in the Faculty at Berklee and he recommended Gary, who taught out of his home. Ed was as amazing as Gary, but a whole different style. Ed was a Master in polyrhythms, with phenominal technique. Not only did I study with both of them at the same time for nearly 2 years, I also was under the wing of Peter Magadini who was part of the Berklee visiting-artist series. Peter conducted Master classes in Polyrhythmic coordination for drum set. I have much to thank them all for. ALWAYS KEEP PLAYING!! @@rick3747

Freddie Gruber showed me this technique many years ago! Decades really! It involves a release and reverse release Motion Also the weight of the the stick comes in to play! for the 16th notes or for Triplets, Eighth notes or any group really But there is a bit of an up-and-down really it’s just in conjunction with the releases see FRED GRUBER for details?

It’s called the Moeller technique. It’s difficult in the beginning, but it’s definitely worth practicing it cause once you get the hang of it, it kinda goes automatically and it sounds good. Just have fun with it and be experimental. You can also do it with 8th notes. Just try to learn it correct from the start because bad technique is hard to fix. Lots of love and I wish you all lots of fun! 💖
