I've been playing recreational 8-ball in the US for almost 50 years when APA rules(8-ball on break wins) were most used. My friend asked me to show him how I broke so well and with the ball cue ball on the side I pocketed the 8-ball 2 times in a row. I was surprised as much as he was. I miss using the APA 8-ball breaking rule which I prefer to WPA breaking rule.

When you play in a pub most people will want to use standard bar rules. Then you got the league or tournament rules. Have to have a different strategy with this. Average people in a pub won't like you playing safeties. And if a certain categories of balls block the 8 ball I try to pick those. And sometimes you have no shot or only one shot and you try to make those work.
