One thing i used to do, is put the song on and go into another room, or go into the basement, you can really pick the bass out, highs and mids don't travel as much. Im a bass player, another way to determine key is peddle on the root across the changes and if it sounds good ypur properly in the correct key ( from a bass perspective). I also play guitar but starting on the bass trained my ear to find key center, then figuring the chords comes quicker too

Smart move. I once explained that technique to a mate after he was recording live sessions. He was amazed at how the Bass sounded much clearer.

what about ear plugs...will that isolate the bass?
@melian99998 күн бұрын
@pazdylan1873 not sure, probably. I could never use ear plugs, like performing under water

Key is definitely F# minor. Sounds like the bass line (at least on the intro/verse) is F# > B > E > C#

Mr. Marshall. New to your channel. Very good. You seem to be a fantastic musician.Totally dig your close ups of your fret board work. I’m new to the bass guitar and currently play flute and sax. Need to learn the bass in order to support my own demos in recording. I’m impressed, I think I’ll learn a lot from ya, 👍🏾

I love SO much about this new video format. THE encouragement, the breakdowns, the lighting - just lovely. That being said, I feel like I watched this with my eyes squinted the whole time, lol. I feel like I understand what just happened, but I also kinda don't - like there are some gaps in my knowledge keeping me from seeing the whole picture. Imma study this video a bit...

I had similar issues learning guitar on KZbin but I realized that once I continued learning from other sources and then came back to the same video months later, the knowledge clicks into place. So don't forget to revisit these videos.

I always intuitively knew to start with the bass. But it was because it was easier to identify. I had no clue what to do next.

I got 2 mins into the video and decided to close it, find the song on YT, and work it out. My guess is it’s in F# Dorian? I might be totally wrong but just throwing it out there before reading the comments (to test myself) 🙈

some good tips here...I find actually hearing the bass note in a lot music can be difficult because of the heavy mixes....If you then try to find the chord you might confuse majs and relative minors because they are only one note different from each other....You can cheat by forcing the EQ up an octave so the bass then pops out.
@harrysearia178411 күн бұрын
I struggle with this too, especially with newer gospel music.
@demejiuk566011 күн бұрын
I find basslines really easy to transcribe and this has made transcribing very easy. Use the EQ trick if necessary. Why not? Btw if you are unsure of major or minor just play the M3 alongside it and your ear will tell you if it’s right or wrong.
@pazdylan18739 күн бұрын
@@demejiuk5660 i just feel the eq trick is not the answer ..it's better to find a way to hear immediately so you can play by ear effortlessly.
@demejiuk56609 күн бұрын
@ I get you feeling like you don’t want to cheat. But what are you trying to achieve exactly? Improving at transcription? Learning songs by ear? Or are you trying to improve at something more to do with playing live like learning tunes in the moment in Jam sessions? I’d just go with the law of specificity if you want to practice ear training in a jam or live situation I’d practice that. If you just transcribing for one of the first purposes I mentioned then what exactly is the drawback to “cheating” by using eq or slow downers? You not hearing the bassline isn’t due to a lack of ability but due to the mixdown. Just seems like you’re being hard on yourself for no good reason 🤷🏿♂️.

@@demejiuk5660 you're kind to respond...just want to get better at learning songs by ear very quickly ,even if not 100%, mainly for in the moment jam sessions.

ive been trying to better my ear training and my dad always uses the bass aswell when he plays the keyboard but what do i do if i dont know all the major or minor scales? i just know the basic major C D and G.
@Kerry2smooth17 күн бұрын
@@Radoganer I would say you need to learn the notes on the E and a string from the first fret to the 12th fret, then you need to watch my video where I talk about the templates the one on the east string, and the one on the a string so you can know how to plug and playthat will definitely help you know where to place your hands when you start to hear certain notes
