I find it funny that in 9th running an infantry with officers using vox casters and few other characters is the best way to minimize your opponents secondary objective collection of points. Because most of our vehicles are over 10 wounds they fall under the bring it down 2ndry. So a mechanized or fully armored army will easily allow them to max out that objective and thin the horde at the same time. Also run squads worth less than 10 wounds.

@@PandorasFolly the best way to mitigate bring it down being taken against you, imo, is as easy as one regiment tactic. Spotter Details is insane, and anyone running a vehicle heavy list not running either Jury-rigged repairs or Gunnery Experts is just missing out. Personally, my army is a themed army vs. Tyranids (I write stories for my armies), but when I'm not playing for flavor, I take spotter details and jury rigged repairs. And my 2000pt list runs a tech priest, so nobody in my home group has maxed bring it down on me yet

Blast is actually a huge benefit against 6+ man units when talking about Plasma Cannons... Tank Commanders w/ Plasma Sponsons are going to be great against Marines, since they'll want to take 10 man Intercessor squads to maximize CP buffs. Also, battle cannons fire twice with grinding advance, so they get a min 3 on each salvo vs 6+ man, so a total of min 6 shots. That's not bad.

@@666LilBull Maybe, but that limits effective stratagem usage, so that's not a bad thing to force. Burning 2 CP for Transhuman is great on a 10 man Intercessor squad, but are you going to waste those same 2 CP to buff a 5 man squad? Probably not.

@@c0horst your doing a few mistakes in your thinking. The first one is that you put all the value to one you unit. If your opponent goes first it will fire at the just because of it size. If you go first you and use that stratagem you will be focus because of it damage output in any case you basically brought a sacrificial unit whit a lot value. Secon think if your opponent is bright also smaller unit you might find that stratagem to OP and costly to kill 5 man units. 3 is that now you get alot of cps 18 or more and also generate more doring the game so spending 2 in 5 man units is more viable and more practical.

Just finished a game against Astra Militarum. They seem totally fine, better than fine. Strong. My 1000 Sons got completely BTFO'd turn 1. Every vehicle I had was shot off turn 1 because the lack of a move-and-shoot penalty for the guard, the smaller board sizes make Vanquisher Cannons with Spotter Details full map coverage with grinding advance, 3+ to hit re-rolling 1's. Manticores absolutely wrecking anything that stayed out of LOS. With the insane firing corridors Tank commanders with plasma cannons create any squad with 6+ models is just deleted instantly. It was like fighting against Ad Mech, but more accurate and more damage per shot. Gunnery Experts is absolutely insane now with no move and shoot penalties. I can't imagine how durable and dangerous Cadians running 4 Tank Commmanders is now (3 + Pask). At 230 points Tank commanders may be the single most under-costed unit in 9th.

I think its fine but this edition is alittle bit biased towards some guardsmen regiments. Sadly tho I heard they discontinued the elysium drop troops 😪 which is one of my favorite guardsmen ☹

@@Russlem the reason tank commanders are "cheap" is because of how fragile they are they don't have any inv save take some las cannons and you can pop a leman like its nothing and if that leman was a tank commander with full loadout of plasma cannons and lascannon you have a great target for killing you were running 1000 sons yea something as simple as a chaos predator with 4 lascannons can do on average 5 wounds with enough swing to even just strait out kill a leman in one turn of shooting remember your tanks get the same bonuses this edition gives so tokyo drift your anti tank weapons out when a tank is in the open and watch as a 140pt tank kills or brackets a 260pt tank

@@aidenwasson7489 As you said, the predator averages 5 wounds per turn. The same Leman Russ Tank Commander averages 16 wounds per turn to that predator assuming you run a hull heavy bolter and send those shots elsewhere and also assuming no Weapons Expert. TC+PC+DC is 235 points, so 95 point difference to a dedicated anti-tank platform with more than 3 times the output AND that weapons platform is also substantially more durable with T8 being a huge breakpoint in the current meta. Also not counting other extremely common shenanigans like Astropath + Up Armoured giving the TC a 1+ save meaning it now has a 4+ on Las Cannons with -1 hit using Strike and Shroud. Tank commanders are eradicators level pointed which is why they were such a problem in 8th edition. The only reason Astra Militarum is doing so poorly in 9th is because they bleed Bring it Down and don't have cost effective melee units... both of which changed last week.

I was looking at an old army list (5th ed) and felt kinda wistful. Words like Company COmmander. Platoon Commander + 4 squads. Then 3 Vet squads (as troops) with Chimeras... Valks as Fast Attack.,,

Yeah I also want Veterans back in the Troop slot, they are far more useful and interesting there, and created an interesting dynamic between the role of Infantry Platoons, Veteran Squads, and Conscripts. I don't need the full massive platoon they used to have in 5e, but something like that would be much more unique and flavorful for the faction

I wish they would give back the platoons. My first guard armies were structured on 3 squad platoons. The loss of massed las fire cost me dearly in many games over the years.

Of course, so back before 8th ed imperial guard infantry squads were purchased as platoons, you’d start with an officer and his command squad, and two 10 infantry squads all as one troop choice. You could then add up to 3 more infantry squads, and depending on the edition, several heavy and special weapon squads, and transports, again all taking up only a single troop choice slot. This was how we brought large amounts of units on to the field, and since everything was broken up into squad elements rather than one big blob, it gave you a lot of flexibility. It also gave us a very unique identity, helping guard stand out.

Appreciate the tip on deciding on Secondaries well ahead of the match, rather than, choosing them after you walk up to the table. Then building a list around those Secondaries. Makes sense! I'm still waiting on the new core rules and updated points cost to drop, before setting my sites of any particular build. But I'm still collecting the models! Hoo-Rah!

Absolutely love your content, will definitely stick around after 9th releases. I think the Obscured trait on terrain will get a change eventually. I'd like to see any obscuring terrain also either be dense, or be considered dense when targeting models past the terrain piece (so firing normally at models wholly within the terrain). It seems difficult for venues to have both types of obscuring terrain, one having many holes in it to allow the LOS trick you guys point out, and the other being almost if not all solid to totally block LOS, at least on the first level. A stronger change could be it obscures LOS until the model is wholly within the terrain so that you can't do the trick you guys mention, but that might be too strong of a change, who knows. I'd love to see your guys thoughts on appropriate terrain layout and what we can do to make the LOS ability with obscuring terrain less of a fantastic shooty trick to have handy

It will be interesting to see how the points changes hit basilisks etc. Indirect fire options got hit VERY hard in the leaked SM points increases.

I was in the processes of building a panzer grenadiers style of guard. Tanks, mobile artillery, transports (Autocannon chimeras for flavor and anti primaris /castodes with infantry. Sentinels were running plasma cannons already and I might squadron those and take Plasma and Autocannon/Missile launcher.

Don’t forget steel phalanx strat; Emp’s Fist tank company allows any Russ from that detachment to cause D3 MW on a +4 on a charge that ends within 1” of the declared unit, you can get a good chance to cause 3D3 mortal wounds on something for 1 CP, so if you go full tank... ram’um!

I love me some table top titan, yet another great video. But I really need to point out what I believe is a massive rules mistake. 'Touching' terrain to does not unlock LOS. The model must be 'on or within' the terrain. If you have some ruins without a base, touching the outside of the wall is not within, and I don't see how that is on. On imo is referring to things like standing on a roof that some people would agrue is outside so no longer within, the 'on' is there to clear that up. This is a massive game changer for non inf, beats and swarms . If you need to get onto the other side of that wall but can not move through it, the whole game changes.

Nice video, this 9th edition content is amazing. Can I ask you sort of unrelated to 9th but... you have such lovely bush terrain that you throw against your buildings. Is that a ready made product? Or how did you make them? I really love them and I would like to copy them ;). The terrain and armies you guys use are top notch.

Really reassures me about my Guard performing well in 9th; the loss of overwatch really had me worried for a while. Any thoughts on Guard superheavies in 9th? 3CP for a Baneblade which I only ever found performed "okay" in 8th feels like a hefty cost.

Yeah i feel the 3CP for a tank with less survivability than the same points Leeman Russ is to hard of a hit. And its Titanic and cant hide behind anything where as the Russes can. Also you need to pay 1 more CP if you want the Regimental Traits. Over all its in a very bad place. Maybe if they buff the T to 9 or Sv to 2+ as the Fellblade its gonna be viable again...

From my experience during 8th, two tank commanders always out performed a Baneblade. The Baneblade/variants are far to easily shot off the board with the amount of hard hitting anti tank weapons getting around. I always felt like the Baneblade deserved 9 Toughness.

I feel like a possible optimal screen tank will be a punisher loaded up with heavy flamers so you don't have to rely on rolling 5+ while engaged. As well it might be a good one to shoot in overwatch when charged.

One thing that does suck about leman russ this edition is that they cost around 190 for a battle cannon and three heavy bolters as opposed to costing around 150.

Wanna see how Death Riders run, but at the same time, I wanna see a full-bore Superheavy Company or Marauder Wing list in 9th. Maybe a hybrid Marauder/AI/Tempestus Air Cav list. Also a huge fan of the Arty park style list.

They just need to drop the points cost of Guard units so more can be taken. The guard is a horde army and need large numbers to succeed in fluff and on the table. Same with Tau. Guard units are currently way too expensive. I just played guard against Necrons. The Necrons had almost as large an army but every unit significantly outclassed every one of mine of equal type. The Necron army even included a superheavy Monolith. I had two Leemans. He tabled me turn 2.

I'd say bring snipers and anti tank. Our infantry is cheep and awful, but out commanders make them a lot better. If they have a lot of tanks or vehicles in general than those will chew you up, but don't let the infantry get to close for a full first rank fire second rank fire shot, especially if they have rerolls too. I recommend snipers to take out the commanders, counter battery fire for mortars that may be behind LOS blocking cover. Anti tank for vehicles, and just pepper the squads with anything left over. You don't need to kill them, just make them weak enough that they can't get a 10 man first rank second tank on you, or Emperor forbid a combined squad of 20. When the infantry gets close enough I recommend you charge against a squad or two and consolidate into the rest, avoid eating to much overwatch. Those are some thoughts of mine about what to do against a guard army as a guard player. It's late and it's mostly just some theory crafting really Let me know what you think.

Also, the majority of our tanks are only 4+ to hit. Unless of course we are taking tank commanders or pask. If you have any moves that reduce our hit roll it's going to make a big difference. Take weapons that have high damage. Or that dish out multiple mortal wounds...focus fire our tanks they are our main strength. Everything else is just fluff built to be an absolute pain in the ass for you...

@@thomass2505 that's kinda like my IG army, mine is ranged and heavily mechanized. (Snipers, basilisks, leman russ vanquishers and mortars) I also have a couple of Chimera's to ferry my few guardsmen units around the board to storm and hold objectives. Its been working fine in this ed so far, (especially with that whole 3 leman russes equal a single heavy unit slot rule) i'm not sure if it will last though...

I’ve played guards since 3rd edition. My opponents all hated losing to the flashlights. They are really going to be surprised now that I can shoot non blast weapons into combat and really show them what the guard should have been doing since the beginning!

You can still reroll the dice as Catachan with a Battle Cannon vs a 6-10 man unit though..? You don't get a flat 3, you get a minimum of 3.

You’re discussion of the Leman Russ punishers fails to take into account the “grinding advance” special rule. As those tanks didn’t move, being locked in combat, they each get to fire those punisher cannons twice, meaning the first Russ will probably kill that squad before the second one even gets to fire. Add the Vostroyan trait that adds 6” to heavy weapons those Punishers are now able to really reach out and touch people.

On the other end of the scale if you use normal Punishers to screen as discussed in the Tank heavy list the Punishers won't actually do that much, if they don't do Grinding Advance they will kill 1 Primaris Marine per turn in combat even if fully equiped with Heavy Bolters, that is actually quite lackluster. Even with Grinding advance you only kill 2 Primaris Marines in combat per turn.

Pretty certain the psychic ritual rule written for characters only to avoid being a 100% auto include for all psychic armies like grey knights, thousand suns, ect.

The list I'm currently running goes: 3 tank commanders (2 punishers, 1 Hammer of Sunderance, all 3 with heavy flamer hull weapons), 1 classic Russ (Demolisher and heavy flamer), 3 Wyverns, 3 Basilisks, 3 Astropaths, 2 Platoon Commanders, 6 infantry squads w/ Grenade Launchers. I know everyone seems to think artilery is sort of a one or two per army thing, but it's hilarious seeing people react to six arty pieces. Though I'll be the first to admit: it's not the best list. But good lord if it isn't hilarious when I get to shoot. Though I'm curious if anyone who happens to read this has any critique they can see for my goal of a tank/mechanized list.

The biggest issue for guard CP is the fact we can no longer easily sub in small detachments for a specific purpose. For example, I'd take a catachan detachment with 3x griffons, harker and a company commander to run as an artillery park alongside my base cadian army. That's not really viable now with the way CP work. Or a character killing vostroyan detachment of command squads/special weapon squads stuffed with 42" range snipers. Neither is burning CP on pre-game stuff like orbital bombardment and prepared positions etc.

I remember you guys saying offhandedly that the new edition may support tac marines due to special weapons and opponents overkilling them but I'm not sure that I understand how and why? Care to elaborate on this because a lot of people would be excited to hear this

I think GSC, Guard, and Admech are going to really shine this edition. MY GSC have always struggled to kill but they always held ground the whole game so these objectives are going to be easy for them.

I've found the exact opposite. My GSC haven't survived to the end of the game in a year, and my two games of 9th so far have shown that to only be an even more extreme situation. At least previously I didn't need to hold ground anywhere to score points. Mind you, I went a 1000 pt game and two 2000 pt games playing Leviathan Tyranids before I rolled a 6 for Feel No Pain, so maybe I just suck at rolling...

40k stats win rate for guard is 34% against admech now and I think Admech is going to crush guard until whatever happens with new codexes. Their shooting with the new PA rules is better. They have more survivable options. They have lots of great melee options versus the one viable guard option. End of the day, guard is really going to struggle taking objectives in the new match pay missions. Guard will also give up the secondaries far more easily than other factions... at least in matched play the points scoring is going to be tough.

I'm curious to see if there will be a new meta that will replace the loyal 32 with a Militarum Patrol. 2CP for a tempestor prime and 5 scions to deepstrike in and up to 6 artillery peaces that require no line of sight seems quite worth it

Blast is only an improvement for IG weapons. The 6-10 rule is that it is a mininum of 3, not flat 3.

What do you think of taking a spearhead to make all those leman ruses obsec? It’s a rule in the guard codex that tends to be overlooked, but with this 3 cp tax, which hurts, you can place a screening tank on an objective t1 and you can still hold it even if say 3 bikers charge you?

If you run the Leman Russ tanks in a spearhead detachment they count as obsec, as I haven't played 9th I am unsure if that is worth the CP cost.

Depends. If another Ob Sec unit makes it to the objective they outnumber you, and unless you clear them off fast, it would be better served folding your Spearhead into a bigger detachment and using your infantry/conscripts to hold them and the Russ to back up that claim.

Surprised you didn't talk about the Basilisk and the indirect fire ignoring line of sight rules. Especially considering that shooting through certain terrain is -1 to hit they will now ignore that

its also going to be more tricky getting enough orders into the army since all the extra hq slots will cost cp to buy the extra detachments. that or you are sacrificing elite slots which sounds to me like a pain.

These are some very interesting points, but until we know what the points values are for the models none of it really means anything . I would really like to see a follow-up video discussing the points changes.

@@ChefSandwichboy auspex tactics put out the infantry points think he has a video coming out for the armor side of the army tonight basically ogorines are cheaper. commissars went up but are cheaper then they were before they got the massive points drop to address all the nerfs they got but they are actually worth taking with the new morale rule. infantry and conscripts went up a point so conscripts are even worse comparatively because of blast weapons. ratlings got hit hard and louse half of there concealment buff however because taraine blocks line of sight they could be good with there shoot and scarper rule. command squads make better weapons teams then weapons teams tempestus went up a bit but there weapons are cheaper so small kitted out units will be good. weapons are odd everything is 5-10 points making plasma weapons cheep at five as are melters and grenade launchers so you would never take grenade launchers heavy bolters got hit auto guns are the same cost at 10 and with the metta being small multi wound models the auto cannon is way better hell cannons are good value i would say the weapons particularly would get a shake up when they good there book this feels like they want to focus test them and move them up and down ardently. as always tho i would expect anything that is bad now will porbbly be metta when the codex drops then get a nerf a month or two later.

I bought DKoK 1000pts Army for $500 bucks to join in for the 9th. But they were so badly put together. I'm currently striping their all the paint, since they were primed white then primed dark tan.... After I re-base them, I hope I can make them look good as yours. Going for Dark Blue/Red Strips uniforms.

Going from a 50% chance to a 66% chance to hit on vehicles with freedoms of movement is a huge huge buff, let alone the blast. GW is going to have to hike the prices of these units substantially or we are just going to see nothing but tank lines of guard and SM in 9th.

is „grinding advance“ not a thing anymore? in your example with the two punishers as a screen, you were talking about the 58 shots for the two models. If my math is correct (and „grinding advance“ is still a thing) it should be 98 shots 🤷‍♂️

Guys what about a Valhallan Brigade with lots of infantry squads and leman russ. They can pound they're own leman russ after they charge into a target unit to force the enemy. The leman russ should have exterminator auto cannons for cracking Primaris/monsters with HF for secondary weapons for automatic hits. Thoughts?

@X also they are "characters" so if your opponent has half a brain looks at all the squishy characters in a guard army and realizes he can max out his secondary objective of assassinate quite easily. Priests, commissars, officers, etc. I have a feeling 9th ed will redefine "characters" for the guard

Problem is now when playing as guard, your opponent will easily get maximum victory points on the secondaries, and nothing you as a guard player can do about it

the problem with tank company's is your opponent will likely focus your commanders in the first turn since you cant look out sir them. they realy need to make it so if they are near other tanks that are closer targets your opponent cant pick them out

They're on forgeworld which is a subsidiary of GW's online model shop ...and also cost twice as much as a normal infantry squad

To be fair the full effectiveness of a basilisk isnt revealed until you play apoc matches on multiple table lengths worth of space.
