Considering the other choices we have: imperium of man (space nazis), tau empire (space commies), orks (life span of a month), Eldar (screwed in every direction), tyranids (space termites). I guess you could say that chaos give you the most freedom. Khorne (free to kill who anyone), zteench (not really free), nurgle (free but your a bloated zit), Slannesh (freedom to choose your next high). Slannesh is really the only god of freedom but you a slave to your addiction. If you manage to control your addictions then you could have true freedom.

Hope a 9th ed codex takes a good long look at CSM. A total transformation like what loyalist marines got(though not as broken good, sadly) would be great. A redo of legion traits and a look into beefing up the actual marines (potentially with an army wide rule like doctrines).

Well there are some subtle hints that we might see world eaters/emperors children codexes soon. If they end up doing that there’s also going to be some pretty big changes to the normal CSM codex as well so I think there’s some hope. I also like Black Legion and it seems like BL is having a hard time being it’s own army over the others.

Getting Emperor's Children and World Eaters their own codex would be a good start. I think CSM with faith and fury laid a good foundation, juicy warlord traits, relics and so on. But I think there should be something you get perhaps for mono building to one particular mark of chaos or solo faction that warbands don't get. As a for instance would you consider more fully a solo build army if there was a single (once per game strat) for 1 or 2 CP that let you take a second warlord trait and relic from the psychic awakening option? Another simple thing GW could do is just give access to better non primaris units like razorbacks, chimeras, drop pods. CSM have good units that are fragile and only rhinos and land raider crusaders and people wonder why the staple psychic loadout was warptime and prescience spam ? Overall CSM are not in a bad place, the overall nerf is the blast rule and the 6 point cultists. The possessed bomb was by far the best build for CSM coming out of 8th, and in 9th it would still have a good spot to help dominate and hold middle build. On top of cheap cultists to throw at objectives, the army had some unique opportunities to run kind of an MSU troop spam death star. (the game is probably better for having blast) That said daemon engines got a whole lot better so I imagine a good build will be patrol/batt with a spearhead... If you have fuck you money you could also buy a shit load of elite dreads from forgeworld which will also probably be good this addition with a master of possessions and just have a dread party. Overall CSM is gonna be okay even though a 14 point Chaos marine and 6 point cultist is a bad joke, what happened to nids and the orcs who really are gonna have to find the 2-3 best units in the codex and spam. CSM can do exalted daemon allies soup, soup with death guard, has forgeworld goodness, daemon engines and some decent elite options.... Nids have 3 units the rest are pretty meh.

Chaos Spawn are suddenly amazingly and I think you've missed a sleeper unit. 1 Chaos spawn is 25 pts for 4 T5 wounds. Cultists are 24pts for 4 t3 wounds. This makes a 5 man unit of chaos spawn more pts effective as a screen, they don't get killed by BLAST keyword and are more or less immune to moral and you only lose effectiveness every 4 wounds. Their combat profile is also amazing in this meta for killing Primaris. S5 ap-2 2D with either Reroll to wound, +2A or ap-4 is so good on a 25pt frame. Also in units of 1 they're a cheap deepstrike denial unit who is easy to hide.

The old Maelstrom of war cards were bad like that, some factions were borderline useless while others basically got free VP just for being on the table ie grey knights getting VP for simply casting psychic powers

The Defiler with a Defiler Scourge seems to have come out at incredible value. I've been running one in my IW and he is borderline invincible at 2k (with an MoP casting sacrifice and the IW strat Unholy Vigour). Also, Venomcrawlers, obliterators, and Rhinos have had a huge improvement in my games.

The problem with CSM is that unless you play EC or WE, you have absolutely ABYSMAL troop choices. Cultists got punished so hard it's ridicolous, costing now more than guardsmen while being worst in every aspect, and CSM still only have 1W for 14 points, which makes them worthless in a game where AP and the number of shots is so high.

I don't see this as a big problem. The new meta is pushing MSU which is bad for most factions. Ork boys get hit with blast, 'Nids get hit with blast, Craftworld/Harlequin/Drukhari troops are astonishingly bad at staying on a point through the enemy's turn, Fire Warriors are worse off and became WAY more expensive (29% cost increases and 50% for Kroot), Chaos Daemons have it worse. I could go on, but Chaos Space Marine troops are upper-middle. The only lists that are more cost effective are Intercessors, Skitarii, and Battle Sisters (Valorous Heart only). Pretty much every other faction has it worse than a T4 3+ save for 14 points. Especially when you factor in Alpha Legion's -1 to hit? Omg they're bricks. My takeaway is Chaos is looking good, even in MSU compared to the majority of rosters for ObSec. Yes, Space Marines are OP. But for cost effectiveness? Maybe Thousand Sons, Death Guard, Adeptus Sororitas, and Ad Mech are more cost effective. Everyone else gets to eat crow. Even Guard squads are now vulnerable to blast.

I do not know from where your optimism comes from but CSM troops are not looking good. 14 points for a model with little to no offensive output and mediocre durability with the easy ammount of AP. Interesting how you point out 29% cost increase for fire warriors while CSM got a 27.7% increase. Alpha Legion is the single bright spot legion trait wise but calling them bricks well perhaps bricks made of melted butter. Also you seem to slightly overrate the effect of blast. Those still need to hit with BS and there often is the question "is this worth shooting at geq?"

Lmao, sorry I can't entertain this seriously. Open you battlescribe and please go look at the following army's troop choices: Tau, Craftworlds, Harlequins, Drukhari, Adeptus Sororitas, Adeptus Mechanicus, Astra Militarum, Necrons, Orks, Tyrannids, and Genestealer Cults. Only Necron Immortals from that list could be considered tankier and only if your enemy leaves some alive (rare in 2000 points). In terms of damage output? Only again, Necron Immortal really compete. Remember? CSM have Bolter Discipline and Shock Assault now. No one is overrating blast who has found a Guard army or especially one of the formerly meta Ork boys armies. I ran an Ultramarines game against Tyranids and my Auxiliary Grenade launchers were averaging 4 kills per squad of Gaunts. And yes, in an objectives based meta the correct answer is usually "shoot at gek, it's their only ObSec". And I really do have to emphasize how silly it is go disregard blast. It's been so devastating in test games for Guard, Nids, and Orks that Guard and Orks are looking at running Chimeras and Trukk/Battle Wagons just to keep them alive. Eldar are so worried about not having ObSec most lists are deploying their ob sec in Falcons and Wave Serpents. I have no idea how you could have done this little research in the meta.

@@Russlem I never said to disregard blast, simply that you overvalued it. It is not the end of all but it is strong. The issue of troops getting screwed happened across board yes and Kabal Warriors are one of the worst offenses GW has done this time but the point was about CSM troops. Just because most of the troops got gutted and trashed does not make CSM any better than they were in 8e. It just makes them the best of the trash tier troops. When comparing 1 wound models the issue really raises it's head that they can only be so and so tough and the more expensive you make a single wound model the more easier it is to sink in points to them that can quite easily be lost because T4, 3+ only holds out for so long. Now maybe Plague Marines and Rubrics at 18 are worth it but they have T5 5+++ or 5++ and 2+ vs 1D weapons. That's an immense difference for 4 points not mentioning their better offensive output. Then for 6 points more you get the crem de la creme of intercessors not taking into account SM's great army traits and doctrines.

RAW the bonus from the Red Corsairs is that the Command Benefits of a Detachment is increase by either 1 or 3. Since you only get Command Benefits from the Detachment in which your Warlord is, you can only take advantage of those juicy 3 CP once

Loved your idea for the nine Obliterators list, but definitely would take them in Iron Wariors over any other. Ignoring cover as their legion trait plus the Faith & Fury stratagem that lets you re-roll the dice whe determining their shooting stats is too good to ignore.

I am playing some games next week and running my 2k iron warriors list .. if anyone is interested , this is my list composition with all new points . its 2k on the nose Battalion - HQ 1 - Chaos Lord / Combi Bolter / Powerfist (as I have him built with it otherwise I would have put 10points on auto cannon for troops) HQ 2 - Lord Disco (Warlord ) Daemonsmith Trait (exploding 6s for Engines) Relic - Insidium - Slaanesh marked HQ 3 - Sorceror ( basic load out ). Warptime / Delightful agonies - Slaanesh TROOPS - 3 units of x Chaos Marines (1 unit has a an auto cannon ) (15marines ) ELITES - 3 x Hellforged Contemptors with Dual Butcher Cannons HEAVY - 3 x Oblits (Slaanesh so can use endless plus the disco lord can trigger there shots to explode on 6s if within aura range when they come down) HEAVY - 1 x Venom Crawler HEAVY - 1 x Venom Crawler FLY - 2 x Heldrakes with Baleflamers I may give the chaos lord a relic like spite spitter for more shooting ,

Fun Note regarding Red Corsairs: a patrol detachment has 3 troop slots but only costs 2 CP, so you could field 2 sorcerers and 3 CSM troops as a "patrol," *netting* you +1 CP. Since sorcerers aren't really faction-locked, I think lists that want to bring multiple sorcerers on top of other HQ's will be doing this to do so. Addendum: Obliterators went up, not down. 95->105. In CA19 they went from 115 to 95, so compared to that they went down.

Thanks for the vid! Honestly there's a lot to talk about here: Personally I've already made peace with the CP. I plan to take Iron Warriors alongside my Night Lords so missing CP hasn't really bothered me at all. Same goes with the loss of specialist detachments. Always thought it was a waste of CP to my playstyle. From what I've seen, I personally feel that AL are going to lose their spotlight in this edition, now don't get me wrong the tactics you used are great, but I feel that they will be gimmicky at best. A shorter board distance means that you'll find it to be harder pressed to get that -1 to hit advantage. Folks will also be working with weapons to ignore the blocking LoS, the Whirlwind Scorpius', TFC, Basilisks, etc. and on a wider scale with more models, if your opponent knows what you will be doing then they will be wise to this and simply outmanoeuvre you to make sure that situation also doesn't happen. Secondly, Assault will be more reoccurring in this edition meaning that if you try to be untargettable in shooting then your opponent will go for the assault. Falling Back and shooting is great but is that strat worth it for a whole detachments points cost? Personally I feel that Iron Warriors will take the Alpha Legion spotlight. In an age where Cover will be more dominant in games, a faction that will take those abilities away will thrive in these environments. Oblits are great as you have spoken of and I agree, slap them with a Jump/Terminator Sorcerer with a Jump/Terminator Lord and Deep Strike them all down. Make the Lord your Warlord and give him the Daemonsmith Warlord Trait for exploding sixes on your Oblits and give the Sorcerer Death Hex and Warptime and give the Oblits Mark of Slannesh. Deep strike the lot down on an area where you can either focus fire them on, or, with two lanes of sight onto two areas on the board. When they arrive cast Prescience on the Oblits and Death Hex on a designated unit. Now that unit has to content with an Oblit squad hitting on 2+/reroll 1's with exploding 6's (Lord), you can re-roll their random stats dice if thing go awry with IW strats, they ignore cover AND ignore the opponents Invun (Death Hex). Wanna clear another unit on another area or just focus fire if the unit 'aint dead? Fire again with the Slannesh strat as you gave them the 'ol MoS! Plasma and Autocannons also then gets a good mention too with IW because ignores cover with Plasma and Autocannons with D:2/Overcharge will make a good ton of damage too I feel, so more room to play with! It is expansive and it is putting all your eggs in a basket but when it pulls off then it's dramatically game changing to potentially winning imo.

for Chaos i am mainly going to run either mono iron warriors , they have some great buffs for shooting stuff, can really ramp up daemon engines, or simply go in heavy on hellforged contemptors with dual butchers/ las for shooting needs . I have 3 contemptors with twin butchers i am going to test out next week in a couple of games :) I agree ignore cover is great trait .. Then my other legion i run is red corsairs simply as they move so fast and charge :) plus the extra CP is great ..

I run 3 units of 15 CC Marines at the moment which works well. With advance and charge and warp time I can usually through a unit a turn into their lines. I'm thinking of maybe bring a hellbrute too for an extra threat.

The conceal strat says "target" not unit. In order to be a target you have to be legally targeted. Therefore hidden units, units in combat and characters do not prevent a unit with conceal on it from being shot at since they are not "targets"

It's not pure cheese, it's hard to pull off and can be counterplayed, and only works on one unit. In their example, the dakkabots just walk forward 6" so the MoP is the closest unit, then execute him, for example.

Crimson Slaughter is a very good legion to use in my opinion. Getting a 1/3 chance to gain a CP on a kill plus that unit that got the kill auto passes Morale checks.

I find it slightly ironic that the strategy for chaos is similar to when shadowspear dropped. 9 Oblits, MoP... and or demon engines, MoP, Disco. I’m not complaining it’s keeping my collection relevant and the chaos line is overwhelming huge. Other armies go forever and a day playing the same things / with the same (or similar rules). 🤷‍♂️ someone at gw didn’t like cultists though...

I had a discussion with a colleague recently. He made a good point, that they should do something with the Chaos Marines to split them up. Ultimately giving the traitor Legions: Night Lords, Word Bearers, Iron Warriors, Etc. Either their own Codex or Suppliment, to make them feel like these "Veterans of the Long War," make their stats better, give them more of a distinct identity, because as it stands, even the traitor Legions play like the renegades and newly fallen Chaos Marines. This discussion stemming from me stating that I wanted to run Older patterns of Terminator plate and volkite weapons, with my Chaos Space Marines because it'd make sense for the Traitor Legions to own them.

@@jessemartinez1635 They should do what they did with Codex Marines. One main book and supplement codices. Revamp legion traits, make them effect more unit types, make chaos marks actually give stats etc if you pay X ammount of points and give them a some army wide buff with "dedicated to X god" etc. Not doctrines but something. They are warbands and warriors, not professional soldiers. Their discipline and equipment is lesser in so many ways but they are so much more because of the warp's influence and how they are forced to wage war. On volkite weapons I disagree. While it would be cool the fact remains that the warp breaks down equipment eventually so make CSM go more heavily into daemon/warp tainted weapons.

How does summoning work in 9th edition? If it's basically the same as in 8th, it should be an interesting option for souping now. Don't have to pay CP for souping, and you can keep your options for big dude or infantry unit open.

Hey guys. Great channel you have. My daughter has discovered a love for chaos. She collects Emperor’s Children. I’m a long time Ulthwe player and she likes the idea of a chapter that honors a god that nearly killed off my army’s race. Anyway, I would like to help her with what would be good to collect for the Emperor’s Children. Not a ultra competitive list just a practical one that would be thematic. She has Lucius the Eternal as her warlord, a defiler, a squad of noise marines and a squad of generic chaos marines for her army. Any advice you could offer would be appreciated. Thanks.

So going down the list Lucius the Eternal isn't terribly strong and is best used, not as a duellist against characters which makes me sad, but as an infantry bully. I would recommend finding a Chaos Lord with Jump Pack or Daemon Prince as her Warlord. The Defiler is great in 9th Edition, good pick. Noise Marines are good and I recommend proxying the CSM as Noise Marines. As for additions, I'd say Obliterators and Havocs would help. Possessed are a great melee unit when taken in large squads. Greater Possessed are a good addendum to the Possessed as are Masters of Possession. I also recommend more daemon engines.

Emperor's Children are jacks of all trades compared to other legions. So you need to take advantage of that. Faultless Duellists is a good warlord trait for Chaos Lords with Jump Packs or Daemon Princes. Noise Marines are fantastic. Slaaneshi Possessed if buffed by Heralds of Slaanesh or Masters of Possessions and other sorcerers are insane. Chaos Predators and Venomcrawlers are good vehicles in 9th.

with a black legion patrol you could already have enough HQ slots to run council of traitors, leaving plenty options for a second detatchment, and the supreme command detatchment essentially refunds the more expensive choice you take, while the +2 CP from him being your warlord covers the CP cost of your Black Legion patrol. ...the maths work in our favor! kind of.

The "Look out Sir" rule got a change. So in the Alpha Legion scenario the Master of Possession would not benefit from the oblits "look out sir", nor from the other unit being the closest target, unless the other unit was both visible, and contained a CHARACTER model. Otherwise that is just broken and all of us chaos would exploit the %@#$ out of that haha

terminators are great as well for WE , with the strat you can give them to boost them permantly , twin claws :) blending at str5 rerolling wounds :)
