The boomerang in 5e is technically not official. It's the pared down version of a magic item "storm boomerang" that shows up in princes of the apocalypse. Effectively the base weapon of the enchanted one that shows up in that book.

I really dig this build. EDIT: I know this is splitting hairs, but you can have the first two benefits of Sharpshooter (no disadvantage at long range and ignoring 1/2 and 3/4 cover) with thrown weapons, but you just don't get the good effect.

If you use a dart instead of a dagger you can get all the benefits, the +2 damage from thrown weapon fighting style, the +2 to hit from archery fighting style, and make the dart a +1 returning weapon. Assuming a variant human and standard array you'd have a 16 dexterity so at level 3 you'd get 1 attack per turn with a +3 to hit for 1d4+16 damage. You'd get an ASI at level 6 and extra attack at level 7 coming to a +5 to hit for 1d4+17 damage. If both hit you're average is 39 damage per round. Keep going fighter and take your last level in warlock with a genie patron. You've now got 3 attacks per turn with a +9 to hit for 1d4+18 (additional +6 to damage once per turn) and you can action surge twice for a maximum of 9 attacks in a single turn. Assuming all hit you're average damage is 190.5 If you decide you really want a dagger you can take dueling instead of archery and end up with a +12 to hit for 1d4+10 per attack and a nova burst of 118.5 max. It's a big damage deduction for a +15% chance of hitting per attack. Compared to most other ranged weapon builds a thrown dart build deals slightly more damage on average per attack. The exceptions being the heavy crossbow which deals 1 more average damage per attack and the hand crossbow because crossbow expert feat allows for an extra attack.

The first two parts of sharpshooter actually do apply to thrown weapons, just not the last one--and honestly it should, because thrown weapons *are* cool. And when you're playing as a rogue, sometimes it makes sense to chuck a dagger at something if you want to save your cunning action for something besides disengage.

This was a very cool build. If we could get some more swordsman stuff in there, we could probably make a Sokka build in this. Maybe go Battlemaster instead of Eldritch Knight? After all, boomerang doesn't always come back (see finale)* so it's nice to have other abilities that can help him lead a unit/coordinate Team Avatar. *Until your DM throws in a reference in your next campaign where you're a spellcaster who doesn't even use boomerangs.

I like that Boomerang is extremely weak, it’s kind of the point of his character. He was considered the weakest of the original Suicide Squad, but just extremely lucky and cowardly. He shouldn’t be a massively strong character. He’s somewhat of a joke and comedic relief, but more recent versions have made him more badass(which I also like).

Sharpshooter actually would benefit this build somewhat. It gives three benefits, and the first two apply to “ranged weapon attacks”. While thrown weapons are not ranged weapons, throwing them is a ranged weapon attack. So sharpshooter would allow him to attack at long range without disadvantage, and to ignore 3/4 cover. For a more straightforward option, Champion Fighter, grab the Crusher feat at 1st level, and you can take Sharpshooter at 4th, the two fighting styles help with the basics, go with thrown weapons for your first and archery for the second (Boomerangs are ranged weapons). You could also spend a feat to grab the one that lets you attack in melee with them... The added crit range makes Crusher terrifying

A boomerang is probably the best thrown weapon by far NGL, since they can go 60 feet without disadvantage and come back if you miss. They also can be Monk weapons.

As someone using thrown weapons in their current campaign (Rogue) so it should be mentioned that Darts are a simple ranged weapon and thus gets access to every part of the Sharpshooter feat. The damage feature only needs the weapon to be ranged and you to be proficient in it. For the rest of it though: I didn't know this villain existed, but it seems like a fun one!

Did you consider the revisited soulknife. You can refavour generating them as them returning on your turn, plus you get sneak attack so you deal decent damage. The main issue is that they deal phsycic damage, though you could say they are coated in something.

I love your bit about having a flavorful build that still works being interesting. The game gets really boring because of optimization paths. Like if you're a melee Dex fighter, means you must use a rapier, essentially (or maybe dual wielded short swords). I enjoy seeing you pull the potential that is there into the light, even if it's pretty rough given the thrown weapon stuff.

One thing to note: While you cannot get the -5/+10 from Sharpshooter, you *can* get the "long range does not give you disadvantage on attack, and ignore all cover except total cover" from the feat. So if you wanted to go for a more martial boomerang build, I'd grab that instead of one of the +2 INT ASI's. If nothing else it turns you into a 60 foot range thrower than a 20 foot one. (Yes, because of the way the feat is worded, this does work.)

I’m an extremely mobile monk/tempest cleric so I can zoom in wack my enemy with my staff and then melee attack with my boomerang without throwing it away and then zoom away without getting opportunity attacked. The storm boomerang (for me) is 1d4 +5 and then 3d4 thunder with a chance to stun.

Megaman is probably a wizard and/or artificer, the only way to copy abilities as he does is 17 levels of arcane trickster wich really doesn't fit him. After taking a monk level, I'd swap out daggers for handaxes. They are also simple weapons, which qualify as Monk weapons, and I think are a bit closer in shape and balance to a boomerang than a dagger. Plus a damage boost from a d4 to a d6.

Firstly, another suggestion if you have access to a 2nd level spell that's not evo or abj I suggest shadow blade, for a boomerang that will hurt your brain, it conjures a weapon that is light finesse and thrown (20/60) it does 2d8 psychic damage and if it isn't in your hand at the end of your turn you can use a bonus action to make it appear in your hand. Also you get advantage on attacks with it in dim light or darkness. I guess this is as close as we'll ever get to bullseye. Weird that you didn't drop in a level or 2 of ranger the class variant let's you hunters mark for free up to your wisdom modifier without concentration. Also close quarter shooting fighting style from another UA actually really helps especially since its worded "ranged attacks" rather than "ranged weapons" Throw tavern brawler on that for proficiency with improvised weapons and you can now throw anything.

Monks have uses for thrown weapons because many of them are monk weapons that scale with Martial Arts. I supplement my sunblade using now 1d8 "kunai" daggers right now. Plus they enable sneak attack shenanigans for say, your average shadowmonk/assassin Ninja.

Fun fact, my DMs do pay attention to stowing and switching weapons. Mostly because we have a polearm master who likes to throw his javelin of lightning while attacking with his glaive. He usually ends up with both hands full and has to drop the javelin to use the glaive.

Given the shorter range of thrown weapons, you could use True Strike to negate the Disadvantage from throwing past the normal range. If memory serves, Captain Boomerang likes to stealth kill when he can, so call your attack on an unsuspecting target, True Strike, then hit him from a distance. Likewise, I'd use any excuse I could to throw my weapons, hitting switches, interacting with the environment, antagonizing NPCs. Call True Strike before each one. Flavor it as calculating the flight path for a longer toss.

"Thrown weapons are bad in fifth edition." Props to reality. There's a reason that, in chronological order, slings, bows, and then (chemically powered lead throwers. Yay youtube!) each became the thing in reality. The old dart/javelin and javelin/atlatl combos are literally prehistoric. We were past them before we figured out that planting seeds to get more of that sort of plant there (farming) was a good thing. So...a rule system that reflects that is good in my judgement. 1d8=4.5 average, 2d4= 5.0 average. Bell curve becomes the thing with more dice.

I was missing some salt on my fries so thanks for this video. ^^ On a more serious note: I'm surprised you didn't make a cowardly survivor archetype, considering Captain Boomerang has survived every iteration of the Suicide Squad he has been on (in the comics at least)
