The 8 note scale that alternates the half steps with the whole steps is known as the Diminished Scale among some jazz teachers.

When it starts whole-half, it's dominant; when it starts half-whole, it's diminished. The main difference is the quality of the third. The whole-half has that nice dim7 plus a maj 7!
