How to Play John Constantine in Dungeons & Dragons (Justice League Dark Build for D&D 5e)

Today we've built everyone's favorite trickster/exorcist John Constantine for D&D 5e! From DC Comics Justice League Dark, the Hellblazer is a force to be reckoned with, but in a more unconventional way. If you're into the more roleplaying aspects of your RPG, this is a great build for you, with tons of skills and spells to make things go your way.

@@cavareenvius7886 he generally has a seething hatred for god/the heavenly host, so even in a dnd setting he'd probably refuse to worship them; and I think he's sold his soul so many times to various entities and gotten out of it no one is around who'd still be willing to cut a deal. If anything maybe sorc because he has innate magical talent, and if you take the live action DC tv verse as any kind of cannon he is part of an ancient magical bloodline.

@@a.z.pantera5577 No need; it's on the Wizard list, which means it can be your one non-enchantment/illusion Arcane Trickster spell. So, you'd make room for _Protection_ by dropping whichever trickster spell you'd prefer to benefit from your higher Cha-based DC. (Meaning you'd keep it as a Bard spell. Or just drop it entirely for whatever other Bard spell you'd prefer at higher levels.)

I tried making a John Constantine like character by focusing on being an Arcane Cleric, you get both wizard and Cleric spells, so you get both years of studies for magic and stealing magic from the gods to help you fight demons and such; as well as their class features being about traping and banishing supernatural people. I understand why you built it like this and it's a lot of fun, just wanted to share.

So, John Constantine has more multi-class than My fingers. The man started as a Bard, he made pact with a demon (Warlock), got blood from THE same demon (Sorcerer), and he is a supernatural investigator (Thief with Spy specialization). The demonic blood makes him immortal, so he can probably reach lvl 20 on all 4 classes.

I assume it’s a mutual desire to punch each other in their smug faces (that’s everyone’s relationship with Constantine), but does he and John actually work together at times, or is he another name on the long list that wants John’s soul decorating hell?

Constantine is that wonderful bundle of so many classes you can't pinpoint without a homebrew. Many people forget his magic actually comes from the family bloodline of Laughing Magicians. I usually include this by giving him a Magic Initiate: Sorcerer as his variant human free feature, then go for 6 levels of Lore Bard and multiclass into Fiend Warlock of Tome.

When I started my Arcana Cleric, it actually made me think “Constantine”, although I would probably make him some kind of Wizard as well if I went with this build. (edit: OR Arcane Trickster?) My favorite use of gust of wind from guards and wards to push enemies through some sort of trap, be it retractable spikes or swinging blades. Forces the enemy to interact with the traps even if they pass their dex checks

This is a really interesting way to do Constantine. I personally think he would be an arcana cleric, he gets to have the flavor of having all the spells, his channel divinity makes a lot of sense, and of course, the divine intervention could be you making a once in a lifetime deal, with a bit of reflavoring from your dm.

Nice take! I personally went in another direction. Valor Bard for the Combination of lore and being able to hit things, and three levels of infernal warlock with Pact of the Tome, now able to get any lists cantrip he grabs Guidance to help shore up skills, and gives him access to ritual cast level 1-2 from any list. He is big on rituals letting him ritual detect magic and identify which strikes me as very John.

I love this build. I did mine as a Roguerer. Divine Soul(I went with Evil for Inflict Wounds). My DM is super cool, so she allows me to use Sneak Attack when I hit with Inflict Wounds, but only with Inflict Wounds so it doesn't become insanely broken.

An idea that I really wanna see you tackle is Death from Darksiders mainly for two reasons. One he seems to be proficient with every weapon under the sun, and two he can cast raise dead along with other buff and attack spells, three he can wear any armor without penalty to all his spells. I would've picked war since he's from the first game but Death has a much larger/interesting toolkit. Wish you luck dude.

I made my own build for Constantine before watching yours: variant human (prodigy feat) sage; bard level 1, divine sorc level 2, the rest bard (lore). This would give just as many cantrips, and a small mix-match of divine spells that would make sense for Constantine to know, and he would progress like with the spell slots of a full caster the whole way through level 20. The biggest issue with my build was I dumped str (8) and dex (10) so without magic defenses he's super easy to hit. But he's smart and charismatic as hell.

I made a Constantine character as a hexblade warlock/lore bard multiclass. Took lucky feat as variant human with cutting words and luck points flavored as bending reality. Warlock gives some great invocations and you can focus on less stats thanks to hex warrior.

I would actually think Divination wizard with Lucky feat. I mean, he /does/ ride on the synchronicity way. It's been outright stated that even time and space will take a knee and realign themselves if it's in John's best interest. That sounds a lot like luck dice and portents.

Arcane Trickster can start with 1 non-enchantment/illusion spell, so I'd definitely nix one of the 3 you listed (whichever the character would benefit most from using his higher Cha-based DC on) to make room for _Protection From Evil and Good._ *_Much_* more fitting, and helpful. Plus, it's the only non- magical secrets way to get it (barring magic initiate feat) and _doesn't_ involve your weaker Int-based DC. It'd actually be the *only* trickster spell that doesn't use the weak trickster DC, *_and_* it's the most useful / fitting for the character.

How about keeping the Urban Fantasy/Noir Wizard train rolling with Harry Dresden of the Dresden Files? The biggest, baddest fire blasts are one obvious goal ("The building was on fire, and it wasn't my fault."), he's got investigative chops and at least decent at athletics, gunplay, and straight up bludgeoning people with his staff...the tricky part might be that at various different times, he's gotten power boosts from demonic, angelic, and fey sources. But you can't have *three* Warlock pacts!

For the record to anyone who plays this character, the component for summon greater demon(blood of a humanoid) doesnt have a gold cost associated with it and isnt consumed so therefore RAW a arcane spell focus is fine to substitute. Personally, as a DM I'd allow component pouches do it aswell as it's just fluff on how you cast a spell when no gold is involved.

I get the "start as Rogue" and using Bard, but why continue with Rogue instead of adding Warlock? It would help reduce the Spellcasting to only one stat.

Depends on your source material. The comic book John is more about conning and tricking people rather than throwing around fireballs. And Constantine wouldn't like to be bound so tightly to a demon to justify Warlock levels.

John sold his soul to three different demons at the same time, making them cure his cancer and keep him alive as long as possible, because if he ever died it would mean the three would have to go to war with one another, and none of them could win it. He tricked them. In the end they all absolved the deal when they realized there was just no winning for any of them. John would never be a warlock because he would never serve another being, he tricks the greater being into serving him. That's his shtick. He's more slippery than the Devil himself.

But the juggling spell between two Ability Scores is such a hassle, wouldn't a different Rogue sub work better (like Mastermind or Revived)?

I opted to go a different route for my levels. I swapped out the 6 Arcane Trickster Rogue level with 6 Archfey TomeLock picking up Book of Ancient Secrets invocation to be able to copy down all 3rd level and lower Ritual spells.

I'm unsure if you take any requests or suggestions, but it's worth a shot. I'd love to see your take on Jesse Custer of Preacher. Personally, I've thought monk to 5 and bard to 15. The idea was to gain the ability to dominate any and everything as he does with Genesis, but is great with his fists. I figured it would be worth a shot to reach out. I've only started to watch your videos, but I've seen quite a few already and enjoy them a lot. Edit: I actually thought to go thief rogue for 3 levels since he was a con artist more or less in his childhood, 6 levels of drunken master monk because of his drinking problem, then divine soul with genesis makes the most sense but still leans towards chaotic neutral by only helping those he meets to his own ends.

Minor correction: According to Jeremy Crawford, Summon Greater Demon only needs the blood if you make the circle. Otherwise, you can simply cast it with your spellcasting focus. Of course, I’d say it would be OOC for Constantine to summon a Demon without a protective circle in the first place, so...

Since we're on the subject of devils and demons, I think Vergil from the Devil May Cry series would be a fun build to make. I'm thinking he's a Fallen Aasimar like his twin brother Dante (for the Devil Trigger and regeneration). Take 14 levels in Horizon Walker (revised) Ranger for flash steps and finding gates to the demon world, and 6 levels in Kensei Monk for getting the most out of Yamato while having the option for Beowulf-style fisticuffs. Take Magic Initiate for summoning swords (Eldritch Blast and Sword Burst). It's just a shame that my version misses out on Steel Wind Strike, the most "Vergil" spell in all of D&D, but I'm sure some tweaks can be made.

I tried it but kept switching the pact because John's got deals all over heaven and hell. Decided to commit to neither and enjoy a bigger spell list with Lore Bard.

@@tulokthebarbrarian2033 oh, I absolutely agree with the Bard list and Cutting Words is pure money. I meant to take the single level of rogue to start and then use WL instead of more rogue levels. Even just 5 levels of WL gets you 2x3rd level slots and 3 invocations. Take the Silent Image, Detect Magic and Repelling Blast invocations and you've just build a LOT more utility magic into your build.

I’m trying to finalize my arcane investigator right now, in this flavor. Current iteration is warlock 2 arcane sorcerer 6. Took the skill expert feat to have a high investigate. I start at 8. I should probably go warlock 3 or 5 for the book/tome that lets me learn all the rituals.

This'll be a hard one to guess before watching, I only know him from legends of tomorrow. I'll say, divine soul sorcerer (if his powers come from a higher being, then that divine warlock archtype) to get good anti Demon spells, and some inquisitive rogue for the detective parts. Edit: dammit, I had a nagging feeling about bard, should have gone with my gut.

It surprises me that John does his best work with a team. Not because of his class, bards and rouges work better with tanks keeping the baddies busy, but the way that literally everyone would rather punch him instead of talking to him always made me think he was a loner like Bruce.

I was just talking with my buddies yesterday about how you should try and make Bugs Bunny. Back in the old cartoons, he would just troll everyone and gets out of any situation. We talked about a theory that Bugs could easily defeat Thanos. Bugs just gets grabbed by his neck (like he always does) by Thanos. Bugs tells Thanos that his nails are gross and starts giving him a manicure. Bugs steals the Infinity Gauntlet like 5 different times while hes giving a manicure and just walks away with it when hes done haha Orc season, Rabbit season, Orc season, Rabbit season, Rabbit season, Orc season ^BANG!^
