My Dad played this solo nonstop in the basement, listening to Doobies on an 8-Track when I was 5-6 years old. I’m 52 but that solo is seared into my pre-pubescent brain.

I've been toying with the idea of playing this solo for years! We play this song in my band without a harp, just a guitar solo. I'm the singer, so it's up to me. Problem is, I don't play harmonica. I am taking lessons online, but this is a great thing for me. It's an epiphany! I know being able to imitate this solo doesn't make me a harmonica player, but it's great for the song and great for me because I just learned a hell of a lot about the instrument in one fell swoop! Thank you. Don't worry, I will still practice my tongue block embrouchure, but this is awesome! Great lesson!

Great lesson as always. Playing this soon with a big 13 piece band. But...I have a request. We're also playing the Bonnie Raitt version of "Runaway," and I've been charged with playing that legendary Buffalo Norton solo, in which he uses four different harps: F, Eb, Db, and C, making a total of EIGHT harp changes in the midst of the solo. Can you do a lesson on that, pretty please?

Fantastic news, David! I'm really glad you are enjoying the lessons. Thank you also for thinking of me to make a lesson for you. Thank you so much for your teachings!! Ive sang lead on this with the legendary John Popper, while he sings back ups and plays harmonica. However he is not available everytime I need him, lol! This is really helping me a lot, soon, I'll be able to play it myself. I'm sure I'll be playing it at the Big blues bender show in Las Vegas this September. BTW, why did you switch from your new, fully wooden harmonica in the second part? haha, just curious. 🙂

@TomlinHarmonica10 жыл бұрын
Hiya - breathing is a complete pig on this I know. The only bit where you can really get a breath in is during the 2 hole draw stabs. Practice doing them slowly and them breathing out a little in between them. Then bring the speed back up when it feels natural and then you will be catching the breath at the point you can.Hope that helps!

How do u not need to let out air? I am struggling with this.
@TomlinHarmonica6 жыл бұрын
Hi Sheena - everyone struggles with breathing in this kind of tune. The thing to practice is firstly playing with a lot less air than you might assume and secondly make sure that you are playing groups of notes in the same direction on the same breath. It takes time but you will get there :-)

This isn't right at all, and I'm surprised someone selling themselves as a "harmonica teacher" can get away with it. "Long Train Runnin'", if the band is playing in the same key as the recording, is in Bb Major. What you really want is an F harp playing in the third position, G minor, or G Dorian technically which is close enough to the minor as makes no difference for rock and roll (as opposed to using G major which has a completely different tonality and sound). That's what'll really get you were you're going.
@TomlinHarmonica9 жыл бұрын
Hi David - thanks for your idea - great suggestion. Positions aren't major or minor though they are just a starting note. In this case it makes more sense to play on a c harmonica in g minor which is what I am show showing in the video. It would be quite hard (though not impossible) to hit the fifth and flat fifth consistently on an f harp in third position. It's a fun exercise in third position, you should definitely give it a go :-)
