you could in fact leave the 2 finger down on the G chord fret the whole time while practicing switching between D sus and G6 sus. Same sound. No need to lift the G chord 2 finger while playing D sus because we don't pluck the G6 sus? hope that makes sense. Might get complicated when the other chords kick in though. I know Bob. I'm over thinking it.
@AcousticGuitarVideosLessons3 жыл бұрын
Ahhhh,,, holy cow- ..... you are correct Rog....!!!! yes, in fact you could just leave that G chord down the whole time - even for the A chord and never move.... What an keen observation- oh my... I really can't even believe I missed that. This is easily the most insightful comment of all time and the ultimate economy of motion. I honestly have to look into this some more- I'm blown away.

I’ve only been trying to learn - without an in-person teacher - and this journey has exposed me to dozens of KZbins of different people. Some are so similar, they]re is not much new to learn from them. Sometimes, I get distracted by one thing or another and have to re-focus on all the basics I have yet to learn, let alone become a little proficient in. There is no other instructor on KZbin, in any genre or technique, that is as accessible, open, responsive, patient and such an obvious lover of what you are teaching. Your commitment to learning is infectious and humbling. Bob. In the midst of all the chaos that is around us all, your steady voice, predictable patience and sincere interaction with everyone who writes to you is a steady ship amidst the storm. Thank you for your contribution to the newbies and dreamers.

Hey Dennis, wow, this is a highlight comment and so very kind of you to say- it's received at such a good time for me. I would be speechless except it is an honor and joy to meet like minded people from all walks of life and from all over the world that share in the joys of music and inner accomplishment. I don't have a giant following, but one thing I do know is all the people that end up here are genuinely warm and kind people with many talents that go far beyond the music. I very much respect everyone here and feel blessed. Many many thanks for cheering me up (I've been in a lull lately) and helping me remember that it's not about quantity, it's about quality.

After a few days of study, analysis of the structure, of the detailed composition of this song (you know me...) I arrived at the "perceived" ("ressenti" in French) phase of music and lyrics, forgetting the technique and trying to make it come out all the nostalgia that permeates it. It is very beautiful, sad and moving. I just read that Prine had been sued for his defamatory statements against Mr. Peabody and his company :-)! Bravo for having so well transposed the strumming into finger picking, Bob!

This is great Bob. Really enjoying it. About the fingers on the left hand. My view as a beginner anyway is to make the appropriate finger changes on the left hand for fret changes even though it's not necessary. You could simply keep all three fingers, left hand down the whole song. For example I can pluck a clearer D if my second finger isn't all the way across the fret board in position for the following G note. The finger can actually dance across between chord changes. Feels better. Hope you get this rambling Bob. Cheers again.

Hi Bob ,Question for You can this style of picking be used for other Slower Rock and Country Ballet type Songs and sound Good ? Beginning guitarist and even newer finger Picking Guitarist . I like Your lesson on this John Prine song, Thanks
@AcousticGuitarVideosLessons3 жыл бұрын
Great question John- this picking pattern is not so much for the style (which is can do slow rock- country-jazz- folk etc.,) but more about the time signature, specifically the "Waltz Time" or 3/4 time. This means there are 3 beats per measure instead of 4 downbeats (the most popular) , and that's what determines if it can be used on another song- not the style. Here's a quick link on some songs in this time signature betamonkey.com/popular-examples-of-music-written-in-3-4/ and here too www.quora.com/What-are-some-pop-hits-in-3-4-time. There's a lot more I'm sure, but this can give you a start which also includes some helpful info about it all. I hope this helps!!

Thank you Bob, it's great fun to change musical genre and learning swing rhythm. After "Corona" it seems easy! I startled as soon as I heard the first measures because in 1977 there has been a French very similar version whose title was: "Travailler, c'est trop dur" (Working it's too hard) by a famous French singer and composer. I prefer John Prine's from far. If you are interested, I will send you the link.

Hi VIV! I figured you would like this song! So many people from the group requesting this one by far. Going to get to all the requests too!. But the problem with this one was the strumming- I but I think it works well with fingerstyle. Of course, would want to hear the song you are talking about. Hi Bob. I only today got to this. Totally awesome song. I heard it from somebody else covering Prine. I just started trying this, but I found it easy enough to just hold that Gsus6 the entire time, and then lift a finger when it was time. After the Corona song, I had to battle to play the second and third strings with just the index finger. Playing the third string with the thumb on that second chord was also a challenge, because it violates my rudimentary finger picking dogma. Look forward to getting this down and bellowing it from the top of my lungs out on my deck. What do you thing will sound worse-my signing, or my neighbor's two-cycle string trimmer, or his hound dog howlin'?
@AcousticGuitarVideosLessons4 жыл бұрын
Hey my friend John, yes, lots and lots of people covered this one- it was popular in Bluegrass music too. I will always say that it's okay to do whatever it takes to be comfortable with the song- even change fingerings if you need to. Holding down notes and not moving as much is always a good idea anyway. And sorry to bother your "fingerpicking dogma" ha ha.. So my guess is you, the two cycle trimmer and the dog all together is gonna be one hell of a sound!! Sign that dog up for fingerpicking lessons... Hope you are having fun with this- I'm late with song number two- shooting for tomorrow in the am.. Thanks John, you always make me laugh!!

Would the 5 (A chord) sound nicer with if we put our 2nd finger down on the 5th fret as opposed to leaving the note open? It does sound less "thuddy, " with that 2nd finger down on the 5th string. IF we did put the finger down on that chord, what would that A chord be called? I tried both ways, with the finger on the fret and without(open) Just a view. Indeed, as you previously mentioned, if we leave that A chord open, (thuddy sound/note) we don't need to change any chord fret position with our left hand (right hander) throughout the entire song, simply maintain, the swing rythym with our right hand without worrying at all about left had fret changes. Thanks again Bob. (ease of motion as you said)...well done Bob.

@@AcousticGuitarVideosLessons Hi Bob yes that is what I mean , does anyone need the music or the fretboard at the bottom of the screen? I dont; I just want to follow the tab. I know that I should be remembering the tune, but sometimes i just miss the G and A. That then throws me out and i lose the whole thing

Hey Les, you know, I thought about tossing the fretboard and then included it. Wish the tux guitar lettering could go a little bigger but that's the top size.

@@AcousticGuitarVideosLessons Hi Bob thanks so much for consindering it, and thanks for the lesson. it is giving me so much. It is simple but the rhythm is challenging .

Hey Les, working on the lessons today and trying to make the sheet music fit. Taking away the fretboard definitely helps but the printing is so small on tux to begin with. I would hate to go to another program seeing how so many are using it now. Anyway, I'll seen you (hopefully with bigger notes! bob

Hi Gbande, sorry for the delay- I just watched the song and very touching and emotional. What a great story! Do you know Barr Chords? That is what this guy is playing in the song.

Yea, in my next life I want to come back as Waylon Jennings- not so good on the guitar but what a voice!

@@AcousticGuitarVideosLessons Haha, here's a great medley with Waylon, Joe Diffie, Travis Tritt & Steve Wariner at the Grand Ole Opry, where they all changed to Waylon's key, since he said he only plays in that one key. It got a big laugh. kzbin.info/www/bejne/h56Uh6WEmpJ3q80
