Plot twist, Raven studies magic and has a spellbook, so she'd actually probably be a combo Wizard/Sorcerer or Wizard/Warlock. However, considering how powerful her magic becomes, Warlock wouldn't really work since she's got to have dem 9th-level spells. I propose an alternate build. Int 15, Cha 14, Con 13, Wis 12, Dex 10, Str 08. Fallen Aasimar (Tiefling fits heritage better but Fallen Aasimar fits appearance better) can be justified since Trigon's father was a deity, though Tiefling can also fit depending on your disposition. Inheritor, Hermit and Haunted One are also viable backgrounds due to her past before joining the team. The build will have to worry about multiclassing Wizard and Sorcerer, making you versatile but weak in the early game as you take 1 (UA Aberrant Mind can work since Trigon's an alien, but Shadow works too) Sorcerer level followed immediately by 1 Wizard level. This gives you the spellbook early on, but most of your spells that you don't hunt down for the book will be Sorcerer, so choosing wisely is an absolute must. You take 17 more levels of Sorcerer before your final level in Wizard to get two free 9th-level spells in your book and a subclass of your choice, I recommend Divination for the free re-rolls. At level 4 you take Magic Initiate for Warlock's Eldritch Blast and another cantrip you missed with the rest of the build, as well as to grab Hex or Cause Fear. At level 8 you take War Caster, then the rest are score improvements. Boom, alternate build. Either one can work really, they satisfy different parts of what makes Raven good as a mage.

Biggest obvious weakness of the build is two different spellcasting scores to worry about, so you probably won't be the best at either score. Then there's the obvious problem that all Wizard/Sorcerers share, low physical stats. Aberrant Mind and having the Shield spell can help being dodgy, but at most this will probably give AC of 18 without magic items improving it. Given she always wears her iconic robes, they could be a magic item such as a Robe of the Magi, but that would be separate from the build itself, since even the Inheritor background should be used for the markings she has that are invisible until the late-game Trigon arc.

Why not set her as a Sorlock instead? Even if she does study her magic, most of it still stems from her emotions and demonic bloodline. Enter Shadow Sorc 17 and Fiend Warlock 3 and boom

@HuffmanTeamGaming I haven't seen anything in 5E rules about that; you must play with strict DMs. 5E didn't carry over the v3.5 mechanic of the XP penalty for multiclassing into more than one class due to "favored classes", meaning that you can build a character that has three (maybe even more) classes if you really want to without penalty. You'd have to have one heck of an unorthodox build for that, but it can be done in 5E.

Fun fact: the Fierna subrace is in Mordenkainen's Tome of Foes, so that and other Tiefling subraces are official material now. UPDATE: I watched this video again and had to look up something afterward. The Empathic feat is Unearthed Arcana material. This isn't a bad thing, but if you want to keep it AL-legal, you'll have to pick something else. I recommend War Caster due to so many spells relying on saves to work right.

Another option: Trigon is DC's closest equivalent to Asmodeus, who is actually a god. Raven's mother is also some form of angelic (celestial) being, so a Fallen Aasimar Divine Soul Sorcerer would work too, just make the deity evil for Inflict Wounds.

I feel like people get too hung up on the technicalities in the comments. Yes, Raven's power comes from her heritage and not a contract with Big Daddy Trigon, but ultimately the fiendlock abilities lend themselves very well to her, and it's easier to link directly to the big evil dude than something like Shadow Sorcerer. And besides, lore is all in how the DM receives it.

When I was a kid watching Teen Titans, Beast Boy was my favorite, followed by Starfire, then Raven, Cyborg and Robin (I loved them all and still do, but that was the order of my favorites. Looking back on them now, Raven has become my favorite, followed by Starfire, Beast Boy, Cyborg and Robin. I found it interesting how Raven and Beast Boy swapped places, and wanted to share. I still love Teen Titans, one of my absolute favorite parts of the DC universe.

Episode 26 of the Fire Emblem stats: Rachel Roth. Raven is best with reason (dark magic obviously) and flight (since she can fly). She has a budding talent in faith because her most powerful form uses light magic. Her weaknesses are in all of the weapons and brawling because she's a purely magic-based fighter. She has great magic and resistance but she doesn't have much charm due to being stoic nor strength due to not being very punch-happy.

My biggest issue is that her setup doesn't let her see through her own magical darkness because normal darkvision, which she would have as a tiefling, doesn't let her. Probably should have Devil Sight in there somewhere in place of another invocation.

Raven's magic mostly comes from being taught it in Azarath so no, it wouldn't be CHA based. Even if it was true, that's no reason to make that her primary because mechanics =/= flavour. You should be building her in the way that best expresses her abilities regardless of which stats that requires.

One that would be fun to do is Sir Daniel Fortesque from the MediEvil games. While the Skeleton isn't an Official race, it's in the DM's Guide for building NPCs, so there is that to use as a basis, at least until WotC make a book that makes actual playable Undead with Skeletons being included. Class, let's make the guy a strength-based fighter, as that's how he mainly operates as. Strength is a big one as he does a lot of melee damage, so put the 15 there. Now, Intelligence and Charisma take a -4 penalty, so it might be a good idea to put the 14 and 13 in those because while the guy isn't really that stupid, he's not that good looking, due to being a fleshless bag of bones. Put the 10 in Wisdom because, again, he isn't that stupid. Put the 11 in Constitution, so that he can take some damage. Then, put the 8 in Dex, as he doesn't really need it, at least initially, and he gets a +2 bonus anyways, giving him stats of 15 strength, 10 dexterity, 11 constitution, 10 intelligence, 10 wisdom, and 9 charisma. As for Background, Soldier for Athletics and Intimidation, as he was the Captain of the Militia, or you could make it Entertainer for Acrobatics and Performance if you don't think that he was really that much of a warrior to begin with, as he was a very good story-teller who got knighted because the king liked his stories. Archetype, Champion, as he doesn't really do any fancy tricks beyond smashing and sometimes shooting, and that shield dash trick, so there's some of the ways in which one can increase his damage via fighting styles - Archery for his bows, and Dueling for melee weapon fighting. Increasing his strength (for melee attacks), dexterity (for his bows and crossbows), and constitution (so that he can tank more damage) would be good ideas as he levels up, especially given that he'll be using plate armor and a shield to reduce the odds of getting hit, with perhaps an extra point going into Charisma to even it out, or just put it into Constitution. Given his lack of a jaw, Daniel isn't going to be giving any speeches anyways, but he can see in the dark, is immune to poison and exhaustion, and doesn't need to eat, sleep or drink (might need to homebrew a reason for him to rest and be healed - magical energy needing to recharge or top-up), but he is vulnerable to bludgeoning damage. Now, he's off to save Gallowmere!

Though the abilities Fit who Raven is, somewhat... Narratively this is completely off! (Even Then I'm Pretty Damn sure it would be EASY to make a more Appropriate Build for her with Sorcerer Built around Shadows, Divination and Encantments, and I'm a Philistine who's yet to bother to Update to 5e yet I know this!) Raven Might as well be the Poster Child for "Sorcerer" , she has Magic Because he Dad is a Demon, not because she's Made a PACT with a Demon, or even because he CHOOSES to give her power, he doesn't have a Choice in the matter, she's got the Magic in HER. If this were not the case it would be 100% Impossible for her to Fight Against Trigon, yet he's her Primary Antagonist, so Obviously, he's not Giving her any power Willingly... Trigon ain't no Patron, he's just the dude who Donated the DNA for Raven Innately have the ability to MAGIC!

I see her more as being a Wild Magic Sorcerer first- may need a custom table that matches more with her powers for the DM to determine how often it comes in, but Bend Luck and the whole chaos aspect fit well with her powers, as well as some Metamagic like Heightened Spell- I see her having a lot of debuff/disadvantaging tools at her disposal. Case in point, Warlock levels would be great for getting Hex(and Eldritch Blast)as well as a few choice invocations, particularly Sign of Ill Omen so you can curse people, though you'd need to go to at least 5 in warlock to get that one. And Monk will certainly help her nimbleness and occasional hand-to-hand she does. Variant human with Lucky feat is pretty apropos too, and whether through the racial feat or background, Acrobatics proficiency is a must as well.

Shouldn’t she be a Sorcerer? Warlocks are based around magic acquired from making a bargain with a powerful deity, not your heritage. Plus this gives her more ability to cast spells, and empower them. Admittedly they’re no fiend based sorcerous origin, but it fits better backstory wise.

Princess Mononoke. It's a spear-wielding Druid/Barbarian hybrid build from what I remember, with a lot of beast-summoning, animal friend type spells, but don't quote me on that, since it has been a while. Studio Ghibli, who own the IP, are notoriously protective of their copyrights, even when affirmative defenses like fair use obviously apply. I want it back so bad, but there's no word yet.

To be honest, the only thing I have against this is Tiefling. For all intents and purposes, the DC character Raven is Human, just with demonic blood. Having her as a Tiefling ignores the entire Infernal bloodline section of the Tiefling, because she has no physical descriptors of Tiefling appearance. (IE: Horns, tail, solid colored eyes with no pupil). PHB describes these as HAVE, not MAY HAVE, which means ALL Tieflings share these features. Also, I would have made her a Wizard, simply because she she does use a spellbook sometimes, access to certain spells (IE: Shield, Teleport, etc.), and she is more Intelligent than Charismatic. But this build works too.

Having a more limited arcane ability makes sense, since that Warlock is borrowing power that is otherwordly. Plus, even though they get less spell slots; Warlock Slots return on a short rest.

No it's just a DM is technically within the rules to say force disadvantage if your moral alignment doesn't match up with your patron's. So this Raven build might not be the best choice for power gaming if your DM is a by the book kinda person.
