A way I am testing it out different checkmates is just treating all checkmates done in the center of the board since there’s no edges. Just by playing around on a board editor I found possible mating ideas: - Queen & Rook - 2 Queens - 5 Bishops - 6 Rooks - 7 Knights
@erickpoorbaugh67282 жыл бұрын
It looks like the problem is that the king’s ability to move across the pole prevents you from forcing opposition. For example, if you have your queen on e7 and king on b6, and your opponent’s king is on c8, your opponent isn’t forced to play Kb8, but can instead play Kg8. I think adding any other piece can prevent this, though, by guarding the cross-polar square. Two rooks should be able to force mate by getting on the same file (to protect each other), and trapping the king in one of the non-polar ranks. You can push the opposing king out of the polar area by checking it, and mate through opposition using the same method as a king-and-single-rook mate, with the rooks’ file replacing the “sides” of the board and the rank of the rook further from your king replacing the “back” of the board.
@Tehom12 жыл бұрын
It seems like 2 queens or 2 rooks could ladder mate easily enough: force opponent's king to a pole, then put rook or queen on the pole and it attacks the entire pole.

You can simulate this ruleset on a normal chessboard. Treat the left and right edges as pacman-style warps and imitate the top and bottom of the sphere by treating columns with a difference of 4 as opposite to each other, so moving a rook up and through the edge of row two will see him emerge at the top of row 6, heading the opposite direction.

In order to play it on regular board I would personally make changes. Maybe crossing the poles would end the turn. Possibly any piece is not able to take a piece when crossing over the pole. Then I would rather have is so that crossing a pole changes the color of a bishop, rather than having it go straight for one square. Or I could also think of the poles being impassable, and still allowing the sides of the board be wrap around. Without computer the rules around the poles seem bit too convoluted to actually keep track of checks and illegal moves.

This is the same game as another one covered by this channel, in the same "Chess Versions" playlist: Noble Celts. "Spherical chess" sells you this globe to play chess on, while "Noble Celts" sells you a vintage map, but what they really are is simply an aesthetic alternatives of a much simpler chess variant: playing on a normal chessboard, consider the left and right sides as adiacent to each other, allowing the pieces to teleport horizontally but not longitudinally. That's it, it's really that. It's one simple variant, with the titles "Spherical chess" and "Noble celts" simply selling you nice boards. Feel free to buy them if their aesthetic pleases you, just be aware of this and of what you are actually buying.

riddle me this sphere earthers, why isn't this "normal" chess and the flat board not a variation? 😂
@0mathgaming2 жыл бұрын
Because the version with a flat board was invented first. Besides, chess isn't the earth. Just because one type of chess is the traditional version doesn't mean the same thing is true for all other aspects of reality. For example, most pizzas are circular (it is true that rectangular pizzas are also common, and sometimes you can find even weirder shaped pizzas, but that's beside the point), but pizza boxes are usually rectangular prisms and not cylinders. Two different things have completely different rules about them, including shapes. Btw I can't tell if you're trolling or not, but I figured I'd put the whole answer here anyways (you know, just in case this type of question shows up elsewhere).
