HOW TO PLAY STEAM VR GAMES ON META QUEST 2 or 3! | Link Cable Setup Guide 2023

Hi all! Here’s answers to some common questions that might help you.... Q: Does it work the same on Quest 3? A: Yes Q: I can't find the Steam VR Performance Test App. Where is it? A: It's gone! It's been removed from the store. You now just need to compare your PC specs against the supported hardware list (link in the description for that). And at the end of the day, if in doubt, just give it a go! Q: When I connect my headset, and after accepting the popups, my screen just goes blank and/or I only see my cursor or 3 dots. How do I fix this? A: There's several possibilities for this. The most common solutions are 1) make sure your GPU and CPU drivers are up to date. 2) Check that your graphics card is supported (see link in the description for list of supported cards). 3) Check that your graphics card is selected as the default graphics card on your PC isn't rather than using your integrated graphics. You can do this in the nvidia control panel for example. 4) Turn off any in-game overlays you might have enabled (such as the nvidia experience one). Q: Why is 'Enable Oculus Link' pop up not appearing in my headset? A: A few solutions here. Try logging out of, and back into, the PC oculus app. Also ensure that the headset and the oculus app are on the latest up-to-date versions, and in the settings of the PC app make sure that 'air link' is disabled (you can't have both running at the same time). Q: I accidently clicked on 'allow' in the allow access to data popup and/or selected 'never ask again'. How do I change this? A: In your headset go to Settings>Developer and uncheck and recheck the "USB Connection Dialogue" button. the pop up with now show up again the next time you connect so you can select the correct option. Q: Why is my my headset not showing as connected in the oculus PC app? Try a different USB cable or USB port. USB 3.0 or above is recommended for both. Also try restarting your PC and headset. Q: I can connect the headset to the PC, but when I play games the video is choppy. A: Try some of these to help resolve the issue. 1) Make sure your GPU and CPU drivers are up-to-date, 2) Check your USB cable (use the USB test shown in the video), 3) Check your PC spec (link in the description). 4) Disable any in-game overlays like the nVidia Geforce Experience one. 5) Make sure your video card is set as the default graphics card for the PC If you're still having issues then have a look at the official meta troubleshooting page here: store.facebook.com/help/quest/articles/fix-a-problem/troubleshooting-oculus-link/ Hope that all helps, and Happy Questing! 😊

For those confused, you have to go into the quick settings section and select "Quest Link" and choose the computer you're paired to. That's how he got to that "Desktop" button at 7:52

Hey Carter I also used to own an htc vive but am kind of interested in getting a vr headset again and the quest 2, likely 3 instead will be my choice so I'm just trying to do research. Have you noticed any visual difference in playing steam vr games on the quest 2? I want to think there should not be any or much as the pc will be whats actually running the steam vr games and not the headset but also are all your steam vr ganes working just fine with the quest 2 linked to steam? I only ask because I remember years ago certain games on steam would specifically list the headsets they were compatible with but now it does not specify anymore. Dude literally thank you for this tutorial. I'm a vrchat player, on standalone quest, and I was looking to get my first fullbody tracking set up, but I found out I had to set up SteamVR and stuff if I wanted vive trackers and base station but it was SO CONFUSING. i am so excited to play my oculus from my pc- ive had the oculus quest 2 since it came out and i've just struggled so much with it connecting to my computer. i've bought different cables, tried the wifi method, ect- nothing worked. i finally got a job, since im 16 atm, and could afford this link cable. its connecting and im downloading steam vr right now. i really hope this works out, im super excited. i commissioned someone for an avatar of my character and everything and im just so happy i was able to learn unity to piece all of the files together and get this working- gahh,, im just so happy. i can finally do stuff i used to dream about. crossing my fingers this works so badly- vrchat is absolute trash on the quest. i mean it works, but it just sucks. the quality is iffy, having to constantly select to view others is iffy, and the lack of dynamic bones or i guess they just added it finally so just what they have of dynamic bones is lowkey garbage. gah im so excited to finally experience pc vrchat in vr- its gonna be a game changer !!!!

Man... Oculus software not being compatible with Dynamic or exFAT drives really made this install process fun. I should have got the Valve Index. The facebook connectivity made all of this a true headache simulator.

It’s not higher speeds, but rather image quality that is affected by bandwidth availability. More bandwidth means you can transfer more data ( I.e. image quality). So the higher the bandwidth then the better the image quality and that should also equate to a more stable connection.

It casts your pcvr game to your quest headset. Same as it does for any other pcvr headset. The point of it is so you can play vr games with better graphics than the headset would be able to do on its own.

Everyone I ask points to this headset as the one for me. Reason being it is both standalone, and can be connected to my beefy PC(Ryzen 5800X, 32GB, RTX 3070). Meaning I can enjoy it all the time. I fly in to work quite often as I do remote sites, Refineries, LNG plants, Hydroelectric dams, Nuclear plants, etc. So being self contained means I can bring it with me in my carry on bag and get a nice 1 hour session every day in my room(or in the media rooms at the camp/hotel). I just don't know if the resolution is high enough for me. I've tried the HTC vive(1) and I found the res a bit low. l like the Vive pro 2 being almost double the res but it's not self contained and most(if not all) gaming laptops like to run at damaging temperatures over 80C.

Quest 2 is a good from both performance and price point. A higher spec would be waiting for the Quest Pro that would be released later in Oct but at a much higher price point.

I tried to do this today, and I got to the step where you download and log into the oculus app. There were many problems, such has I was having trouble logging in and once I did, it said my software was out of date. If it says my software is out of date for the oculus app, does it mean I have to update the app or the VR headset? If it's the app, could you please explain how to update it? Do you need to download Quest VR if you are only looking to play steam VR?

You do need to install the oculus/meta app on your pc if playing over a usb cable. You could alternatively go wireless using steam link that was just released ( a video on that is coming out shortly).
