I second the opinion of using a guide to play through the very first Metal Gear, just because some mechanics can be obtuse or feel downright punishing, if you approach it with modern game design in mind. The game was made in the 80's and it shows in some ways, for better or worse.

Yeah it's definitely a very "old school" game at this point. It's like the very first Zelda game - I absolutely love it but I can't recommend it to most people without also recommending they use a guide.

Great video stealth. I’m an old mg/s player so it’s nice to see this video for newcomers to take a look at. I used to play metal gear series religiously, yearly but haven’t played it in recent years because life and family matters. Now that things are settled and mgs is on the rage again I’m happy to pull out these games from the shelf and get back to playing this awesome franchise once again. Keep up the great work and content man.

I recommend playing in this order if you want to get the most out of your experience with this franchises 1) Metal Gear 2) Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake 3) Metal Gear Solid 4) Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance 5) Metal Gear Solid 3: Substance (Not Metal Gear Solid Δ: Snake Eater) 6) Metal Gear Solid: Potable Ops 7) Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots 8) Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker 9) Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance 10) Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes 11) Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain 12) Metal Gear Solid Δ: Snake Eater (Do this last cus get the original experience playing the original MGS3 then after you completed the franchise play Delta to relieve the 3rd game and have fun comparing the differences to the original)

I think chronological order is mostly looked down on due to the fact that even though the games in release order are set at differing timelines each game in release order assumes you have played the last game even if it is set before the last game. I like the fact that the video doesn't recommend it for the first time player for other reasons, but mostly I think release order is a smarter way to play these games.

I know someone who play MGS depending on the characters perspective in chronological order. For Big Boss they play MGS3, PO, PW, and Ground Zeroes. Venom: Phantom Pain & MG1 For Solid Snake: MG2, MGS 1 and MGS4 (Interchanges with Raiden) Raiden: MGS 2, MGS4 (interchanges with SS) and MGR (Could be played while Raiden is sleep so you can end off 4 I like how my friend plays in this order because he looks at it from the perspective of the character instead of the player. He said there is no heroes and villains. Just people who think their right and tell you to believe what they think without a second thought. Villains like Armstrong and Vulcan are the pinnacle of these idealogies while people like Sam and Grey Fox are the tools to push these ideas. Zero was a hard middle ground by wanting to create clones of Big boss. Sundowner literally took the extreme version and decided to kidnap children and harvest their brains to program killing missions. Then you got people like The Boss and Solid who wanted the people to choose their own path in life while people like Solidus rather there be no freedom and everyone is under some form of control. Hell we see Ocelot exhibit this power in 4, yet folks like Johnny who was TOO HUMAN (NOT JUST ANOTHER GRUNT). In a world where demigods, telekinesis, genome solider and clones. You would think Liquid would have a problem with any kind of funny business, a solider who has weak bowels would be a liability but hes only human no a person. Everyone in the MG series are weapons. Johnny putting himself as person first instead of a weapon for an idea is what saved rat patrol. THAT right there is what/how the boss' will was interpreted by Big Boss, the freedom to make a choice and be loyal to what YOU believe in. Johnny didnt believe in getting jabbed with nanomachines and his bowel movement saved him from injection. At the end of the day they're all playing Gods and some look at regular civilians as equals while others are looking at people with a digitalized lense. Hence why the patriots turned digital. 🎉

What about a playthrough where you go through the solid snake Era Metal Gear Metal Gear 2:SS Metal Gear Solid Metal Gear Solid 2: SoL Metal Gear Solid 4: GotP And potentially Metal Gear Rising Then going through the Big Boss Era Metal Gear Solid 3: SE Metal Gear Solid: PO Metal Gear Solid: PW Metal Gear Solid V: GZ/PP? I think this avoids any major spoilers that Peace Walker and 5 could have for 2 and 4 and doesn’t jump too jarring around graphics and such?

@@PerfectStealth I think the reason is that mgs5 sets up mg1 and mg2, another reason is by that time your in to the series your more likely to play the 2D games because you want to explore everything leading up to mgs4. I do hope in the future mg1 and mg2 will get deserved remakes.
@NobleBoss
@NobleBoss Жыл бұрын
@@bobthebuilder243I don't think PO is any more optional than the msx games and rising MG1 especially is pretty barebones and is only worth coming back to later if you can stomach the gameplay and care about what little story it offers. MG2 is good but MGS1 covers a lot of its story since it served as many peoples entry to the franchise. I still hope they get a remake someday. And MGR depends on how much you care for Raiden and hack n slash gameplay. PO does offer some character development for Big Boss which makes it more satisfying than simply skipping straight to PW after MGS3.

Not a bad order I agree with most of your list but Here's my order: Metal Gear Solid (1998) Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty (2001) Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater (2004) Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots (2008) Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops (2006) Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker (2010) Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes (2014) Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain (2015) Metal Gear (1987) Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake (1990) Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance (2013) I feel like game play wise and story wise it will flow a bit more smoothly. As far as playing in chronological order, people need to understand that the important role that gameplay provides to the experience. You need to grow with that as well. Jumping around too much in terms of mechanics is a lot to deal with. And let's be honest most people just are not that good especially now a days with the stealth genre. With the time jump in MGS3 some people didn't catch on that Snake was a different Snake from MGS1&2.

Great vid man, I've only ever played through MGS1 , MGS2 and MGS3 Snake eater, thoroughly enjoyed all 3 games. I'm a huge fan of Solid Snake & Raiden and would to get the most out of playing these games again as an adult. I never played any of the others so I imagine there is a whole chunk of Lore i'm missing out on. For this reason, do you recommend that I complete the big boss arc followed by the snake arc to get the most out of the story? I'm fine with chopping & changing graphics haha. Thanks

Since you're somewhat familiar with the story - it's a tough call. I would still recommend an order of release playthrough if you haven't played through the original trilogy in a while. If you think you're intimately familiar with that era, it can't hurt to try a chronological order playthrough. Big Boss games into Solid Snake games would definitely be the play in that case. Either way, I hope you have fun! :)

I really don't think MG1 is that difficult for anyone to need a guide. The game is quite short and the maps are very small as well. Even though it's non-canon, I really also would have recommended Ghost Babel as well. That one really surprised me and seemed like true continuation, gameplay wise from MG2. Someday I'll have to finish the series. Portable Ops killed the mood for me. After MGS3, I really couldn't stand Portable Ops that much... Consequently, that means I have never played MGS4, MGS5, Peacewalker or Rising... I was wondering, does MGS Survive have anything to do with the main story? Does it have any kind of offline campaign that's worth it? As of today, that's the one Metal Gear that I haven't bought yet.

If it helps at all, while release order is without a doubt THE order to play this series (for your first time through it's a must), the only ones that are fine to switch the order in my experience is Portable Ops and MGS4. You can choose either/or to do first and the other second

This video is a horrible take. For someone who has never played any MGS game, the only way to play the game is in chronological order. It makes no sense, to play it in any other way. Playing chronologically, fills all the plot holes, answers any unanswered questions and confusion you get by playing it in release order. You can also completely ignore the 2D games, you literally miss nothing by skipping these. In fact, MGS1 is pretty much a replica of the 2D games and MGS1 also fills you in on what happens on the 2D games. If you want the best experience, you should ideally play it in the following order… MGS3/Delta MGS Peace Walker Ground Zero MGSV MGS1 MGS2 MGS4 There will always be questions and confusion with this game series, but I truly believe that playing this game chronologically, it’s far easier to digest and get into.
@shsrpr
@shsrpr Жыл бұрын
I disagree. I think it's sort of either or in terms of understanding the story. I don't think it's any easier to digest the whole of the MG saga either way. Starting with MGS3 as a newbie you're at least starting further along the game design timeline I guess, so it'd be easier for gamers used to more modern mechanics than the earliest titles. So there's that, but it's still not a very modern control scheme. And in chronological order, yes, you start off with one of the most critically (and fan) acclaimed of them all first, so there's that. And the story is chronological, which makes sense that people might want that. But in chronological order the games sort of expect you to know some things, names and such, that if you're experiencing them for the first time you wouldn't know or understand the reference. And these are games, not movies, as much as Kojima likes his cinematography and storytelling. As games, you then have to go straight into the PSP title(s), which Peace Walker is a pretty huge game for a handheld title. It's a big ask to get through. And it is a handheld title, it's definitely geared at least slightly towards kids playing it moreso than any other mainline title in the series especially the next pair of console titles. And then GZ & TPP which is another massive game, and one that ultimately doesn't even have a proper ending. On top of which all three of the V games (PW, GZ, TPP) aren't really like the rest of the MGS franchise. After TPP, if you get through it all, you're most likely feeling spent on the franchise. But if not, taking a huge step backwards to either the 2D MGs or to MGS1 & 2's control schemes, graphics and game progression style is a bit much to ask from a new player to even want to continue the series at that point. But if you go in release order you see the whole story unfold the same way that whole generations of gamers did. Plus you can see how the control schemes morph over time to what they eventually become and grow with them, from simpler to more complex. You can still skip the 2D games or play them after V... And even as acclaimed as MGS3 was/is, MGS1 was even better received by all different kinds of gamers and critics at the time it was released (MGS3 was hated by a lot of "fans" upon release, it took years for some to come around to it even if critics loved it, not so with MGS1), so getting to that one sooner rather than later is a good thing. It's a bit of a good entry point into how most of the series works. It even kind of begs the player to keep going with the series at the end of each game, which is why gamers were hotly anticipating each new release as they came. So I agree with the video, chronological order should probably be more for people who have already played the games and know what each entails, and just want to follow the story along again. I think if you want to do partial chronological order that might make sense though. Maybe do the Solid trilogy: MGS1, 2, 4, then move on to Naked/Venom with 3, (PO), PW, GZ, TPP, (then optionally MG1&2). That way you mostly get the progression of the series still, but there's some stuff in 4 that relates to events in 3, so that's not exactly ideal either. But I agree there's at least a case to be made for chronological order. I mean, asking a new player to start a series in release order with games that are 25-35+ years old is a bit of an ask too. So to each their own, leave it up to the end user.

Yeah, no. Chronological order completely goes against the intended experience and spoils all of the many twists. Not to mention, if you’re used to the modern gameplay and production value of something like TPP, MGS1’s 1998 controls and graphics is guaranteed to turn you off.
