My Mali/dobe has excellent targeting skills and has a great ‘out’ and ‘yes’ but there’s a BRILLIANT bit in this video that’s just helped me because mine DOES sometimes drop it mid game and it hasn’t occurred to me to tell him ‘out’ to protect my hand from him going to regrab it! Going to start that from tomorrow!! Also, he loves tugging as much as he does winning it so he tries to get me to take hold of the string as quickly as possible and he kind of ‘punches’ his muzzle (with the ball in his mouth) into my hand as if he’s trying to give me the string but because he’s accidentally caught me with a tooth doing that, I’ve taken to having him out it onto the ground. I don’t know if you can visualise what he’s doing and how it can lead to me getting my hand or wrist bitten if he’s punching at the air with the ball in his mouth trying to ‘put’ the string into my hand as I’m reaching down for it. Can you help with what I could do to teach an alternative behaviour that involves keeping still while I take hold of the rope again - having him sit or lay down and outing it is all I can think of! He NEVER grabs the rope, he was taught to play with a ball on a rope by a great trainer who does IPO but he’s so driven he can’t wait for me to get hold of it and start the game again if he wins it and I don’t know how to sort out that habit that I’ve inadvertently created!
@inkwhiskers99482 жыл бұрын
Your boy sounds amazing! My GSD doesn't have a clue how to play tug (my fault entirely). Wish I could help you.
@cynthiaaustin17632 жыл бұрын
Just a thought. Could teach him duration in saying one, two, three, then give the reward of the game. Might be safer to teach with food first. This helped me in reigning in my dogs insanity for the ball. 1,2,3 is like "yes" but keeps the dog in "pause" almost. Can lengthen the time in-between the count as dog gets it. It is a trick I got from watching Otto Von Mueller and his Belgian named Monkey. Your dog sounds so amazing.
@ragdollyally2 жыл бұрын
@@cynthiaaustin1763 thank you for this suggestion - I’m having difficulty visualising at what point I’d be looking to teach that duration in the cycle of play though, because it’s happening when I’ve let him win the ball and he doesn’t actually even really want to win (I let him just so I can tell him how strong a LYIN he is (haha) - I think I enjoy that more than him haha) - so I’ve let go of the string and he thinks he won it, and he is trying to help me get hold of the string more quickly when I’m actually already leaning down to catch it - his punching at me makes it harder and if only he would keep still, I’d find it easier to catch the string without having his teeth banging into my wrist or hand - I have a black arm today with a little graze from the tooth but he really punches hard as he’s so desperate for the tugging to start again. I wondered if I am inadvertently rewarding his impatience by proceeding to grab the string and starting to tug again. I’m going to have a look that guy up and see if I can find an example of what you’re referring to with the 1-2-3. Thanks for the idea 💡 Hopefully Andy might see my question and have a suggestion too. I’ll have to film Arlo doing it as I might be able to see an obvious mistake I’m making by watching the game and his shoving his head at my arm.

I wish mine would sometimes bite with less pressure - my trainer can flick it out of his mouth because he has perfect timing and knows when the dog is adjusting its grip and that’s when he’ll flick it out, but when he plays with me we have to use a particular kind of rubber ball because he gets his teeth embedded up to the gum line in a solid rubber ball 😂

@@AndyKrueger I'm curious about the positive punishment and what the correct way would be. I have started teaching my dog the leave it command but I notice I end up scanning the streets for things he would pick up/eat. As too prevent him from picking it up by executing the command before he grabs it. Same goes for things in the house. I'm not always there to tell him to ''leave it'' So for a few things I have already applied positive punishment. I don't want to overdo it but some things just leave a stronger impression. If he is constantly wanting to sit down or lay down with the tug is he just tired? Or wanting to just keep possession? In my opinion there's no such thing in the dogs world as "ball drive", that's PREY drive, and i never seen a prey, like a rabbit going into a dog's face, tapping his nose before. You start moving the ball and 1. You gonna get bit? I have a 6,5 years old mal and not got bit a single time while playing. Watch out for your dog if you are playing together, move the ball in a way that the dog can easily get a bite on it. If you holding the rope, the nearest part of the toy gonna be the ball, not the string, why on earth the dog would go for the string? And the 3rd one, "you gonna completely screw up all the dog's targeting"...what? 🤣You gonna screw up the dog's targeting with succesful bites on a moving object more than with holding still a toy in front of his mouth?

You want to train No to mean Sit?

@@AndyKrueger I want the dog to STOP whatever he’s doing and sit immediately when told NO. Yes…

Are familiar with the Caucasian Ovchakra?

@@samuelmandarelli2645 So then why not just say Sit? Will accomplish the same thing with one word instead of two.

@@AndyKrueger Ok… Obviously not. NO! Is one word… I’m pretty sure anyways. Scenario: 1 235# Caucasian running towards the UPS dude. I yell “NO!”. Dog immediately stops and sits his ass down. Scenario 2 Stranger knocks on my door. Dog goes ballistic. I say “NO!” Dog stops going ballistic and sits at the door where he was just going ballistic… Scenario 3 235# Caucasian on lead for afternoon walk… decides to chase down and eat that damn dump truck that’s been driving by all day aggravating him… “NO!” Brings him to a dead stop and sit… rather than sit… stay… heel… blip… bling… bloop… while being dragged to my death in mortal combat with a dump truck. One word. “NO!” Stops him dead in his tracks… no matter what he’s doing. Running, jumping, drinking, eating… but especially when being overly protective. “NO!” Plants his ass on the ground and disengages him completely.
