After many requests, I have finally made a video on how I like to begin teaching the Out command! This is my 11 month old client board and train Belgian Malinois named Fiona. This video is the FIRST time I have done this with her and I posted the session totally unedited! I believe it is important to teach this command without conflict, which means it will take time! By no means in this video will you see a finished product, BUT, you will see the very first session which will hopefully paint a picture on how this will continue to progress. As I always say, use these videos as inspiration, and don't necessarily copy step for step. Know your dog and what is best for them!
Would love to hear your feedback in the comments! How is your dog reacting to this technique?
My Patreon starts March 1, 2022! The first month will have detailed unedited videos on Fiona's progress among other videos!

I subscribed on this video because this is an uncut training session. It's fantastic to just be able to observe a great trainer and their dog develop the process without the cherry picked "that was perfect" cuts most trainer videos I've seen provide. I get it, trainers want to show case the 'right' way to do it, but I'm sure the temptation with many is also to showcase their own skills. Uncut like this video is brave but I think the most valuable for viewers like me. Thanks man!

For example, one of the most interesting parts of the video for me is the first time the trainer let the tug fall to the ground on the switch. I was thinking, wait how is he going to pick that up without the dog going for the tug on the ground as he reaches for it (which I'm sure is what my guy would do). Instead there was a few seconds of good play to ensure engagement and a casual pickup followed by good play as he moved the item behind his back. Gold!

Thank you very much 🙏🏼 I agree. I enjoy a good ‘highlight reel’ as much as anyone else, but I admit my favorite training sessions to watch are uncut with a dog that is new to training.

Very nice! I think the old-school compulsion methods to teach "out!" are (at least partly) to blame for having dogs that grow up to "hate" the out command. I've seen this so often; Mals that will let go on cue, grudgingly, to avoid e-collar pressure. But then, these little lightning quick "flash bites" they take when they were supposed to just apprehend the decoy. I believe that with your method, that would not happen, as the dogs don't feel they're being deprived of the bite. Great work, and you've got a nice tug-collection there, plus a very nice property, with that lake as well!

I get bit quite a bit. Sometimes it is bad presentation, sometimes it is bad targeting, one time it was that I got the soft version of the tugs you use here and a hard strike took the tug and my hand (I then bot the firm version). I know if you ain't bleeding, you ain't training, but I am 67, and have old man skin--like crepe paper--I bleed a lot. So, I got some cut resistant gloves intended for kitchen work. Made a big difference for me.
@ogk9com
@ogk9com 2 жыл бұрын
I normally use a small soft treat instead of 2 identical toys. Give the "out" present treat. Then instantly back to toy. I've always worked on building trust that I'm giving the dog something better then back to play. I don't want your toy. I've always had fast release times. I will try your way today. You're a good teacher. My kids are learning from you as well with their malinois. Stay warm up there in the buckeye state.

I see what you did there Andy. Really love how you are utilizing the natural behaviour of the dog to create success for her and you. And I'm a big fan of the 'conflict free' you explained. I was already working with 2 identical toys like this, but am wondering: how do you move from the swtich to the actual 'out' command?
@AndyKrueger
@AndyKrueger 2 жыл бұрын
Once the dog has Switch totally down, I then preface it with their name. What starts to happen is the dog hears the name and starts to anticipate letting go. Then I can introduce the Out and reward by letting them re bite the same toy instead of switching. This is a very condensed version of the steps! And there are a ton of ways to do it, this way just works well for me. Also since I compete in French Ring, it is in the rules that the handler must say the dog’s name before Out. So I like to start that early 👍🏻

@@AndyKrueger I'm a little confused so after they master switch you then change the word to the dogs name so you'd say "Fiona" and wait for the dog to out then reward the toy? or say the dogs name then show the toy to get them to switch? once they start anticipating outing when you say "Fiona" you then move onto using one toy and do what? do you just say "out" and wait for them to let them bite the same toy or use their name then when they let go of that one toy let them re-bite and then randomly say "ous" and reward when they let go?

Thanks! I believe it is necessary. First, it can actually increase a dog’s desire to bite and hold once they understand it’s an interactive game. Second, if one day your dog grabs something they shouldn’t, you have a way to communicate to them to let it go 🙏🏼

Question Andy. When bringing the dog back to the crate, and your allowing them to hold the tug until it gets there, what do you do to make them out it before they get into the crate? I know you can try food and what not, but if the dog is really possessive over the toy, just wondering if you fake like your gonna switch to the other toy and just not give it or something else.

Before seeing this video, i have been playing fetch with my 7 months shiba inu. He loves to play fetch and tug but i must admit, was only able to have him let go of the toy when playing fetch by using the clicker when he was bringing it back. I tried to fade the clicker and it went wrong since then. He brings the toy back, lets it fall at our feet and looks at us. When we try to pick it up to do another round of fetch, he confuses it with the game tug i gess and bites into the toy before we get a chance to pick it up and sends it agian. Is that reource guarding? I think not because he really wants to play fetch. But how to have him to let it fall at our feet, let us pick it up to do another round of fetch. Waiting your precious advices. I learn so much from your video.

Of course. However this is a 3 week board and train and she is a pet dog. So obviously criteria depends on the dog and the goals 👍🏻

So how do you do this with a dog that has resource guarding issues with toys?

As the trainer you must learn how to change the dog’s mind about the activity. Every dog is very different so there is not one approach 🙏🏼

Is it important to have the same color toys? Does color have value for dogs?

Nope! Different colors are just fine!

Is your ‘switch’ just when you have two tugs that are the same and you’ll also teach an ‘out’ separately?
@AndyKrueger
@AndyKrueger 2 жыл бұрын
Yes absolutely. But I like this first because it teaches a fast/ clean let go with no conflict 👍🏻

Question - my Mal Dutch always goes for the handle even if I cut them off. How do I get him to want the tug? I think it might be the too much or little back pressure of the tugs maybe? Any info is appreciated!

What would you suggest for those of us that don't have the strength or ability to engage like you do?

Then I’d hire a trainer to teach it 👍🏻

I have totally poisoned the out cue! All on me, I see it now, I created such conflict with my dog. I say "out" he holds harder! What's the next step after this one?
