How to Play Yoda in Dungeons & Dragons

Two green guys in a row, this week we made a 5e build for Yoda. He was the highest voted character in the poll on last month’s Indiana Jones video, if you want to have input on future builds, make sure to vote in the poll. This is a great build for consistent results, letting you control your rolls, and giving you high enough skills to roll well at the start. I imagine the build would still hold up quite well, just go Hexblade warlock instead of fighter, and Bladesong instead of Divination. Stat priorities are Int,Dex,Cha,Con,Wis,Str.

You could reflavour it as a Form I sweep to hit multiple droids. Every Jedi knows how to use it.

Really? Not a single person saying "Kensei Monk?" You get the all saves, evasion, unarmoured defense, movement speed, mental defenses, the laughing at aging, the astral projection shit, making your weapon super magic and awesome. I'd throw in a few levels of warlock, probably Archfey since we only care about the first little bit. Pact of the Tome for all the cantrips, Mage Hand, Guidance, Prestigidation, Message, Gust? Basically 5 of your choice though. Other useful invocations being Detect Magic at Will, the Push/Pull on your Eldritch Blast.

You could take Magic Initiate to cover the cantrips you want that the dip in Archfey Warlock doesn't cover

I tried this but I just used a straight up goblin elemental Monk. Magical initiate also allows you to gain green flame blade

Going to substitute Drunken Master Monk for the levels of Fighter. I feel it fits Yoda's character as someone who is extremely powerful yet humble and uses his enemies prejudices against them. Excellent work, Tulok!

Ever since I first saw this vid, Yoda has actually been a goblin in my headcanon. This will remain the case as long as Yoda’s species has not been given an official name. #DecemberTulokRewatch

I had a character very similar to this yoda. He was a rogue/mage/cleric/fighter build, loosely. And he was a techie/artificer. My DM and I made it work somehow. Most of his attacks were weak. Fixed that with a modified Sun Sword. This is the one that took down the Terrasc single handedly. It nearly killed my character and I had to be super creative in the fly but it worked. He had Sith and Jedi traits and behaviors, so he was closer to Revan. By the time he was level 16, he was known and feared across most of the world. Rose from being a goblin slave to the leader of a huge faction of multiple race Force Weilders. Hell of a campaign. Jedi/Sith are almost always going to be a multi class or specially created class. They have their ups and downs.

Be sure to ask your DM for a Sunblade so you can get an actual lightsaber and if UA is allowed, for sure go Mystic as you can create a very accurate Jedi/Sith with that class. I made a Githzerai Mystic and it was fun and satisfying.

I always thought of Brilliant Energy as the lightsaber weapons. The sunblade seems more of a sin against physics aimed against evil.

My first thought was... Goblin - Monk Kensei 3 / Wizard Bladesinger 17 Someone below pointed out that Knowledge Cleric levels [instead of Wizard ones] would be far less MAD and that is certainly true. If Hexblade could be WIS based then I think it would make a better analog to the "force" and mesh stat wise with Monk levels far better but that would be homebrew territory. Might as well take the Jedi homebrew monk subclass if stuff like that is on the table.

I think I would have gone ranger over fighter. Gives more of a spiritualist feel that fits for Yoda, and the Horizon Walker's 3rd level ability lets you mark a creature and turn your weapon damage against it into force damage. Sounds pretty lightsaber-y to me

There was an enchantment in 3.5 that let you do that called "dancing" weapon. Maybe ask your DM about making one. The problem is that the 5e rule for crafting is... Terrible

Interesting interpretation for Yoda. I have a Jedi character that uses Hexblade Warlock instead (with another version that multi classes with Mystic, but that's Unearthed Arcana). Then again, my Hexblade Warlock is more of a Starkiller type character that is more offensive in nature, as opposed to Yoda whose spells are more for utility. After all, "A Jedi uses the Force for knowledge and defense. Never attack." I just think it's hard to do a Jedi character and not use Eldritch Blast (and all of the great invocations that go along with it). That is a literal Force Push (and another invocation turns it into a Force Pull).

Personally, when I make a Jedi I go with kensei monk and knowledge cleric. Just to reduce the MAD. For Yoda, I probably would have replaced that Cleric with the wizard, but I’d have gone with Bladesinger.

@@josephedmond3723 1st: this comment is over a year old, and even back then the SCAG said, quote, “Your DM can lift this restriction to *better suit the campaign*.” I’d argue keeping a Jedi master accurate qualifies as “better suiting the campaign”. 2nd: Tasha is calling your phone. She wants you to look in her cauldron. Bladesinger is in there, has gotten an upgrade, and had its restriction removed. In fact, quoting again, “Originally created by elves, *this tradition has been adopted by non-elven practitioners, who honor and expand on the elven ways*.”

Episode 17 of the Fire Emblem stats: Master Yoda. Yoda is going to be the first lance user on this list since his lightsaber is more like a walking stick than a sword. Since he's a master of the light side of the Force, he's going to be very good at faith. He's not good with heavy armor since he's very short. His dexterity, magic, and resistance are quite potent but he's very slow since he's an old alien of tiny stature.

one time my party needed to cross a tricky path with a very deep hole so rather than having the party make some hard strength and dexterity saves I cast reverse gravity and slow fall on the party so we could just walk across the seiling because magic does everything if you use it correctly

You don't need to make a video for this one but I'd love a direction on how to build for Hawke from Dragon Age 2's Trailer Destiny. I can't tell if he would be a better Pact of the Blade Warlock, or Eldritch Knight. And for weapon, would it be a staff or polearm?

Not familiar with Dragon Age unfortunately, but when building mages I always ask what the source of power is. If its practice and patience, that's an EK or Wizard. If it's some sort of magical benefactor that's a warlock

I think most Jedi are either Bladesinger wizards or Kensei Monks depending on if they are consular or guardian.

Hard to say, as I'm not fully sure what's in the pipeline from WotC. I will say I have so many characters I want to build that I don't see myself circling back in the near future, but if something game changing comes out who knows.

Bradley primeau My thinking is that if you take an action to give your next action advantage, you could have just attacked with both actions and had two chances to hit anyway (same likelihood of at least one hit as advantage gives) and a reasonable chance of getting two hits. Taking two attacks seems strictly better if you’re already in combat. I could see it having a minor use if you casted it before combat starts? But not enough to get it as one of your cantrips

I know you did this 4 years ago, but if not using Psionic on a psionic type character when there is the ability out there seems, not good. I think you just should have made him up using Pathfinder or 2e. 5e is too messed up to try and make anything using Psionic in it that is why they gave up on it. But then WotC is shite the bed right now any who.
