I hear a lot about leaving the swirl ramp. I’d like to see numbers on these after the “port” job to see actual numbers
@arturozarate17528 күн бұрын
@@jeremygourde9880 the swirl ramp is good to keep in most street applications. Removing it completely is tricky. Some get lucky and miss the water behind it, but the risk vs the gain reward really isn't there. The cathedral port OEM casting flows great with the swirl ramp partially removed....and just a little bit better completely removed. Man....I might have flow numbers on an old laptop. My ex-wife set fire to my shop and collection of data, images, etc.... In 2001 when I started porting these heads while I was in school, I took the complete removal approach. It was several dozen heads and a year later that I started to question my methods.....

Get some single cut aluminium burrs! Will be less prone to clogging.
@arturozarate17528 күн бұрын
@@wilsondriver654 yes, but a thin film lubricant like Royal Purple Max Film sprayed occasionally will clear the double cut burr and keep it sharper, so it can last longer, so it can do more work...... Welding tip gel works great too. Ultimately a non-ferrous burr would be the right tool for the job, but they can be intimidating to the uninitiated. They're sharp when new, and that first bite ain't always "love".🤣🤣🤣

does porting increase combustion chamber volume and possibly lower compression ratio
@Artoconnell Жыл бұрын
No, in this case it will slow the intake velocity down, and all those sharp thin edges are stress induced cracks waiting to happen.

Bro, did you ever run these heads? That bowl looks pretty large in the video, so I just wondered if this engine was a little on the lazy side on the bottom if it's an N/A deal! I'm not being the YT know it all, I've always tended to probably ask too many questions, but I generally end up with a pretty good understanding of things in the end. Did you just do this set for the video? I'm surprised that you didn't get a valve job done. You can normally pickup roughly as much power there as doing all the other work and you got a valve job done! We know that all LS heads need a valve job if they have any miles with the way they pit on the exhaust side and the only contact the valve is usually making with the seat is a little pencil-tip thin ring way outside. At least that's my experience with the ones I come across. I'd imagine I rarely see one under 200k...

You need a single cut burr for aluminium ideally. This guy is using a double cut, intended for steel. Can clog up easily with aluminium.

seems like that hole you make in the intake ports might cause turbulence.
@corytaylorbuilds25662 жыл бұрын
The hole ends up being plugged in the end because that is where the rocker bolt goes, and the rocker bolt threads go all the way down to where that hole is made, so it doesn't end up being open at all!

Don't pat yourself on the back just yet. If you think youre gaining 40cfm from doing a "cleanup"......then fully ported cylinder heads would be gaining 100 to 150cfm or more!😂😂😂😂😂 Fact check that 40cfm. More than likely you hurt low lift flow and the intake port will stop flowing at 0.550". It'll back up 60cfm less @ 0.600" and never recover. The swirl ramp you removed aids swirl which mixes the air/fuel charge amd promotes better burn....smh. The short side air speeds will be much higher as well as the roof air speeds and theyll collide in the narrow and turbulent bowl that wasn't sized. All the flow you potentially gained will be beat into submission at the small throat, and what does make it out may net you 5 more ponies. Excellent example of what you shouldn't do to a cylinder head. I bet its good to brag on though.....👍

The swirl ramp is to improve fuel efficiency at low rpm, and hurts flow opposite the short turn at high velocity and lift. Every good porter takes it out.
