Not really. So much is missing from videos like these that tell you how to run your appliances with an inverter and car. First of all, alternators are key and easy to understand. A full size car usually has a 130 amp alternator. This puts out 12 volts X 130 amps = 1560 watts. So, you add up the wattage on each appliance you want to run and keep it below that 1620 and you'll be able to run them continuously as long as you have gas in the car's tank. A new fridge may use up to 200 watts and that's only half the time. My 55 inch TV, computer, router and cable box only use 89 watts continuously. A bunch of efficient lights may be another 100 watts. My freezer is even more efficient so maybe 50 watts. If I have a 1000 watt inverter I can easily run all those and more while running my car continuously. If you want to know what amps your alternator puts out then go to Autozone.com or any parts company and look for the replacement alternator for your vehicle. It's typically 130 amps. A compact car is typically about 65 amps. Do the math and you'll see what you can run on these alternators continuously. So, how long can you run your car idling? It won't hurt the vehicle to run it on idle for a couple days. A 1.6 litre engine will consume about .11 gallons of gas per hour. A 3.8 litre engine will consume about .33 gallons per hour. The bigger engine will burn 8 gallons in 24 hours. If the tank is 22 gallons then you can idle that vehicle for at least two days with 6 gallons left to bug out if it doesn't look like the power will be restored soon. It's easy to connect an inverter to a battery and run a couple toys. This KZbinr needs to put some real useful info into his work.

Love your straight forward talk, no B's. And yes, harbor freight every time. So I'm wondering if you can give me a tip. If i want to run a tv and and DVD or gaming system in a car, how would I go about it without using my car battery? Could i get an additional battery and just charge it every few hours by starting the car and hooking it up to the car with jumper cables and using an inverter? Thanks
@DIYSEMI2 жыл бұрын
You could do something like that. U would need a good inverter... Pure sine wave for gaming probably. Maybe a deep cycle would suit you best, with the battery isolated so it doesn't power the car but still charges

@DIYSEMI4 жыл бұрын
Depends how big your sump pump is. If its a single stage 1/4 horse probably will. Probably want a bigger inverter tho. Check the rating on the pump. Compare it to the inverter.This video was kind of just for proof of concept, if one wanted to power things like a t.v. And electronics, you would definately want a nicer, more costly inverter that has a pure sine wave. The possibilities are endless..depends how much money you want to spend...could also add another battery in the mix. Thanks for watching!

In some cases you can...BUT....When your refrigerator first turns on, it has a high peak power....~ 6 x the regular wattage...For example mine is 200W normal rate, the peak will be about 1200W...so you need a large inverter...Typically 1500W inverter or more. Based on what I recently learned from other vids and reading, typically you don't want to run more than 400W on your car unless your alternator has enough amperage to handle it. ...that means you got to check the amperage...when you get the amperage multiply by 12V (typical car battery size ) that will tell you the max inverter size (in watts) you can use on your car and if you can run your refrigerator a few hours. I've see posts of people who say they have used their car... You can alternatively set up a system without the car using a larger inverter and external 12v battery, but its more expensive than just using your car. Based on my research, you are looking at an easy $500 to get that going.

what's better for charging devices, power inverter or car charger?
@DIYSEMI2 жыл бұрын
I prefer power inverter
@dustydawson89775 ай бұрын
Both are clean power, I prefer the pure sine inverter, because you car charger, ie, cigarette lighter plug can't handle more than 10 amps 10 x 12v=120w. Inverter from the car connected to battery can do 80% of the alternators rated amp output. Most cars have 100 amp alternators or more 80% of 100 is 80amps x12v=960 watts. So it really comes down to how much power you need

you don't want to mess with the HV battery.... but if the car is 'on' the big HV battery is keeping the little 12v battery charged much like an alternator.... so yes, you have more capacity to run loads for longer.

Great video! I have a question on this: could you create a loop if you have a Car Battery Charger? Let me explain: 1. Remove Car Battery (CB) from car, ensuring it first have enough charge 2. Attach the Inverter to the CB, so the CB is providing power to the Inverter - however, the CB isn’t being charged as it is no longer in the car 3. In order to keep the CB charged, you’d then plug the Car Battery Charger (CBC) into the Inverter’s socket and then connect the CBC alligator clips back to the same CB, thus completing the loop I’m not sure if this would work in practice or if it would cause any damage to any of the equipments involved (CB / Inverter / CBC) - so I welcome your input.
