25:00 My wife and I had exactly this experience on Beinn Sgulaird a few years ago- except we never saw any birds. It was similar weather. Out of nowhere it sounded like loads of wings sweeping overhead- but neither of us saw a thing in clear weather. I always assumed it was a rotor vortex from an airplane wing gradually dropping onto us.

Amazing commitment Murray and awesome summary for the potential to experience an inversion. Beautiful. My experiences have been more luck than judgement. Always magical and very rewarding when leading a group who have never seen such natural wonders as fogbows and broken spectres. Have also experienced the flock of birds syndrome. Usually racing pigeons who rise to avoid the cloud and fast , hence the sudden noise. Fantastic video.

Excellent as always! On the night of Friday 1-2 November, I was camping outside our club hut above Coniston in the Lake District. Early in morning I heard a noise just like yours which lasted a surprisingly long time. I don't recall hearing this before. I fdecided it must have been a flock of small birds. Somebody who stayed inside the hut (cottage) almost persuaded me it was a big owl as there's known to be one around. Hearing your recording, I've gone back to the flock of birds theory.

@@ScotlandsMountains Thanks Murray. A quick update on my comment. Just a day after I watched your video, I did Ben Cruachan, and it just blew my mind, there's no other words to describe it. The inversion in Glencoe was just over Rannoch Moor. This time it was all around, as far as the eye could see. People were just sitting on the summit and watching in complete silence. Clouds were sitting at just over a 1000 metres, the other tops on both sides were visible, but Stob Daimh, which is 999 metres metres, was covered. I was texting with my wife at home, she was seeing fog and drizzle through the window, and I was basking in beautiful sun. Hopefully I'll get to see it again at some point, but this was the first time for me, on munro number 37.

Stunning footage, Murray, and brings back so many memories of inversions, both in Scotland and Cumbria. Particularly loved the backlit drone footage. Re the birds - I've had that quite a few times and particularly at this time of year, there's a lot of birds on the move, migrating, and they often fly at quite a height. Easier for them to navigate above the cloud too, I should think. Usually you can see a flock coming but you were understandably distracted by talking to camera, but from the sound of the calls I could hear on the video, it sounded like geese maybe? If birds sideslip over a hill or a ridge like that, you can often hear the wind in their wings which can be a spooky sound. Anyway, enough waffling. Great stuff as always.
@ScotlandsMountains2 ай бұрын
Thanks Irene - yeah it was very strange but from the glimpse of the flock I saw they seem small - medium sized birds flying very quickly and very Agile over the landscape and contours , no idea what they were tho!!lol Thanks for watching ATB Murray
@ireneboston79532 ай бұрын
@@ScotlandsMountains Ah, in that case it sounds more like thrushes (like Blackbirds, Redwings, Song Thrush etc) which are also migrating in their thousands at the minute (arriving from Scandinavia and from Iceland directions). Amazing to catch it like that really. Thanks for all the effort you put into videos.

I caught a nice inversion last winter from Bennachie (Mither Tap) believe it or not. Cloud was at sea level in Aberdeen and I knew it wasn't just haar from the sea so took a chance and got about 5m above it at the summit. Bizarre and magical, though very icy! Had a similar experience at Ben Rinnes a few years ago on New Years Day with settled snow at the summit. Just goes to show that you don't necessarily need great altitude to capture one, as long as you don't mind a bit of a slither up top perhaps.

As i mentioned on IG, we camped on beinn a glo looking for the inversion. Had to deal with all that wind but it was so worth it. What a morning and wow how warm was it. You’ve captured that so well. Amazing footage as always

absolutely didnt feel like an inversion was on the way the night before. It was pretty grim up high and so glad the winds and rain died away to leave what we got - hope you had fun on Beinn a Ghlo too - a fabulous mountain :) Thanks for watching ATB Murray

@ i woke up about 3am as you do to clear skies and I could see looking west what looked like the start of it so I went back in like a kid at Xmas praying that was going to do as forecasted. Cheers Murray ATVB Robert

Nice one 👍 was up on Beinn A Ghlo on Saturday night hoping for an inversion. Also had the wind and rain. Was pitched right at the summit of the middle Munro without any shelter from the wind. Was also in the tent thinking no chance now. Made it that bit more special after not thinking was going to get it and enduring probably the worst night I've had in a tent 😖😄👌

Hi Murray. I was lucky to have an inversion on my first ever time on Stob Dearg. It was magical, just wanted to stay up there all day. I’ve had a couple since in the Lake District but not on the scale of the one in Glencoe that day. That noise of the birds came through really strong on the camera….weird. All the best Dave

It kinda baffled me as it was so loud - I actually expected to see a plane or drone or something it’s was so loud and only glad I saw the flock of birds dissappearing at high speed ! Very strange ! Thanks for watching M

Thanks very much for the video Murray. I've only ever had two inversions in 3.5 years of climbing the first being on Ben Ledi on an early summer's morning where it was damp and warm on the ground and clear and very warm on the summit. Second time was recently on Mount Keen but only visible to the south whereas on Ben Ledi 360. A very interesting video tonight, really enjoyed learning more.

You’ve reminded me of my total eclipse experience in Newquay 1999… the birds went mental flying out to sea in their mad panic to roost 😂
