In this video I show you how to prep and prime new drywall. I go step by step in drywall dust removal from the walls. PVA primer is done before painting. This video is a painting tutorial for beginners. I show how to roll on primer using a 18” Purdy roller. I do dust mopping to remove most of the dust from the walls and ceiling. Enjoy!

Love your videos. I have been building for 40 years and have seen a lot of changes and improvements to tools and techniques. I still learn something from almost all of your vids. One thing I noticed in this vid is how you fill the paint pan. I drill a 1/8 inch hole in the lid of the five gallon pail, opposite he bung (big hole) and the place apiece of painters tape over the hole. When pouring into the pan, uncover the hole. The paint will flow very nice and even with no gulping. Try it. Merry Christmas!

Crazy thing is I just started doing this & before I just watched your video I had a natural instinct to do all the things you did before starting to prime. I just did it out of sequence lol. What I need most is that handle your using to to keep the roller in place. I’m currently using a smaller roller but I notice how it tends to slide off a lot when I’m applying primer cuz of the handle I’m using.

For those 5 gallon buckets, you can actually turn them 180 degrees, so that the hole is at the top. Then they won't gulp while pouring, and you don't get paint dripping all down the side. Works for anything with a spout offset from center, like paint thinner.

Perfect! Just what I was looking for. We are having some work done in the basement and I vacuumed all the drywall Sunday and then was going to go back over with a swiffer to get any that remained and I had no idea that there was still that much dust on the seams. It was clogging up the pads in no time and falling to the floors that I had already vacuumed. That's when I realized that I needed a good video to tell me how to get the rest of the dust cleaned up before priming. Are you sanding between every coat of paint and primer?
@davidharrison3074
@davidharrison3074 2 жыл бұрын
First of all, I love smooth ceilings. That give such a beautiful look and clean. Dusting is so important. Had many jobs that I literally peeled the paint off a job on about 1/2 the walls on a higher area because someone figured since they couldn't reach it, no one will know. Wrong. Still love hand priming and painting over spraying. Better look and very durable. Thanks again Josh for an inspiring video. You always cover all the important information for those who might never have painted. Also paint with primer in it doesn't mean you should use it over fresh drywall even patches should be primed first. Paint and primer mix is for going over a wall you want to change the color if no touch up is needed. As you said too about having enough paint or primer on the roller and not try to get as much out of it by pushing hard. Don't let the paint work you. It goes on so nicely keeping the roller loaded with paint. 18" rollers are so much nicer too. Running the pole sander is so critical as well and I have always done 2 coats of primer regardless what a manufacturer says. if anyone watching this has never done two coats of primer, try it. Your walls will look wonderful as long as you follow the important steps. Thank you again. 👍🏻

Hi David! I have tried the paint and primer mix before. I have not had any major issues but I know the best way is to prime first. I think hand priming is superior to spraying. I might make a video about spraying it on and then back rolling it soon. I know it’s a faster way so some people might find value in that. Yes if you don’t get all the dust off it can peel off. I have seen it before! Sounds like you have a lot of great experience. I’m glad you are a subscriber! I appreciate your comments!

@@TheExcellentLaborer the prep work that goes with spraying is time consuming as well. I've always been taught to take pride in your work. Being in the trades since I was learning drywall and plastering at 12 years old and continuing on and learning all the other trades to do remodeling of kitchen bathroom and basements but never building houses. I have always worked by myself except for a few areas that needed more expertise. Carpeting, vinyl flooring or masonry work I have always had someone to take care of that but at least knew what needed to be done if I had to make a transition from a wood floor or tile floor to carpet or vinyl, I would take care of that. And remodeling I was almost like a one stop shop. When you go into someone's house to remodel the kitchen and they only have to deal with you except for the countertops that pleases a lot of customers. But if you're honest with the customer and give them what they pay for and believe in what you do that sells the work all in all. At 59 now and health issues from a stroke 10 years ago, my neurologist recommended when I was 52 and having some residual issues from the stroke and then some mild seizure issues, he felt it was time to slow down. I have helped so many people still in areas that I can handle here and there but always try to give as much information to help others out. With a lifestyle change and helping my wife take care of her mom who we live with since I had to listen to my Drs, I maintain 3.5 acres and all the house things and so forth. It might all sound like a bad thing to happen, but actually I stay positive and will never quit. So, that's why I still do my best to help those in need. All the years of the trades and problem solving are for me to share. Learning new things is never to late. Thank you for letting me share this and as always e will respect the comments and always make them beneficial to others and never step on toes. We need to work together. Thank you Josh Merry Christmas to you and a Safe New Year.

@@ckuiper7332 isn't it so pleasing to have basically repeat customers and referrals from them to others. I remember to this day when a person was referred to me by another customer of many years and she said that the other individual made a comment that I do basically everything. As she went down her list , each time she said something I made a comment that I don't do that and she moved to the next item and I continue to do the same thing. When she got to the end we had so much laughter because she said her friend said I do everything and you told me you don't do any of these. I then started laughing and I said I was just having fun but I can take care of everything that you have on your list. After that day we have had a wonderful relationship and I was able to help out for many years to come after that with her and her husband. To this day she always brings up that memory from almost 10 years ago and how she felt so heartbroken thinking she was told, I was a One stop shop. Hahaha. When you build a trust relationship, it will change everything. Growing up doing plastering with my father then drywall and always learning to listen to the customers and have more of a bond to be a part of their household instead of a contractor, was so rewarding. When my dad passed in 1990 there were people that were showing up to pay their respect even from him just doing one job. He made that impression on so many people and I always wanted to be the same way. When I branched off years before and continued my business in complete remodeling as I stated before, my father always respected what I did and knew he I loved what I did. I was glad that my brother took over the plastering and drywall business when my father could not continue when he turned 80 years old but he always dabbled in little projects on some of the jobs. After my brother passed the beginning of this year, the almost 70 years of experience of plastering and drywall was done but not forgotten. Have a blessed Merry Christmas and safe New Year.

Great video! I just want to add another reason it is important to dust properly is because the primer does not properly bond to dust. Think.. putting a sticker on sand.. Nothing after will stick. The paint will chip and peel and the whole wall will have a short lifespan. I am a muralist. I am not working today because paint crews had to come back and completely resurface a wall that they didnt properly dust. None of the paint would stick afterwards. Very expensive problem to fix

There's a couple ways: If you are doing a lot of drywall like the quantity shown in video - use a drywall hoist (rent one or buy one harbor freight w/ coupon). If one sheet - make a dead man from a 2x4 fasten together into the shape of a "T" it will wedge Sheet to substrate at an angle from the floor - I've done this alone before with both with the original weight sheet and the lightweight sheets - either way - not easy at all & best if you have help with that. The difference between these two brushes is huge. The bristles of the 3" XL Nylonia is about an inch longer. The stock of the brush is twice that of the little angle brush. It will hold multiple times more paint. The small angle brush is made for small things like window sash.

2 part question. Can you not spray primer? Also when painting, if you are adding crown molding, would masking the ceiling off while painting the walls be necessary? With crown molding you wouldn’t have to cut into the corners correct?

Awesome!! DiGGs the Large Dust remover tool unit thing -- is sooo much better than blasting with the reverse wet-vac! Just Say No! to Paint Buggerz! (lol). Reversing the wet vac also works great to "wring out" that dust mop.. (TIP1:) slice some 3/32 or similar v-notches into that wet vac suction head with a hack saw -- this will allow the head to not stick as much when vacuuming & increase suction with the airflow too!. *Always* use PPE. Especially eye protection & the gloves when painting - paint is a chemical and no one likes to scrub hands with a brush for hours after priming! (TIP 2)--> body lotion works *Extremely Well* to help with cleaning paint from the skin/ face/ arms, etc.. Sanding Screen after prime is the ultimate way to go in producing Quality results!!! --> It's Never a Crime to Prime! (lol) Az All~wayz --> Great vid bud! Hey C Kuiper! I like your tip about doing the V notches in the shop vac head. Sometimes it does tend to get stuck on the concrete floor. Not so much on the Advantech subfloor. Thanks a lot for your valuable comment!

Hi Josh! So, out of curiosity: Would you consider the 'finish level' that you're priming in this video a "Level 3"? Am I to understand that you are applying primer over exposed, bare drywall (in some spots), and sanded mud on other spots (primarily joist, screw holes, etc.) -- thank you in advance, sir!!!

I can't find the dust mop you use on your Amazon products page. I'm a total newbie! I didn't know this type of mop exists. I assume you don't get it wet, right? If you see this, tell me what that type of mop is called. I so appreciate this video. It's so nice to hear all the tiny little details (like working from the ceiling downward, and wearing goggles) that other peoole making videos assume everyone knows. Thanks!

Those spout plugs on the 5 gal. bucket are kind of goofy, almost like they want you to spill paint all over. I have a spout that screws on but I don't see buckets like that anymore. I do have one that snaps in the hole that works well.

Is that a paint /primer u use for the ceiling ? Can I just leave it painted with primer on my ceiling since it's white ? can I use a paint /primer on my ceiling or does it have to be seperated ?
@MAGAMAN
@MAGAMAN Жыл бұрын
If you are painting new drywall, you want to use a separate primer/sealer before you paint, even if your paint claims to have primer in it.If you don't prime before you paint over new drywall you will have problems with paint peeling.

Do u allow the cutins to dry before rolling?
@gregoryhungerford6712
@gregoryhungerford6712 Жыл бұрын
Keep the cut-ins wet as you move across the wall. If you let them dry, you will have an inconsistent double layer where you lap the cut-in from the field. This creates ghosting and is almost impossible to correct as every layer you put on just keeps the overlap different from above the overlap and below the overlap. If you can get your floor real clean, you won’t have to cut that in and worry about overlap and you’ll have trim. Wall corners have to stay wet. Also, you can’t stop mid way going down a wall for a lunch break- again you’ll create ghosting. If it’s a hot/dry day- you’ve got to move fast. Take a break between walls, if you need to. If you are lucky enough to have two people, the roller person can chase the cutter. You’ll be surprised how fast you can paint a room. Two other tips, back roll a lot to keep from having roller edge lines showing, and don’t try to save paint. Get as much paint on the wall as you can cleanly pick up with the roller. Go back to the tray often as it saves your strength. Double check the wall for drips and edge lines while it is still wet-then go to the next wall. Don’t focus on spreading out all the paint on your roller- go back to the tray often. Pump rollers are great if you have a whole house to paint- you can rent one.
