Best advice I can give from an old soldier 1. Practice getting up early ( like 0530 hrs) and going to bed late (like 2300 hrs). Training days are long get used to it. 2. Practice making your bed with a flat sheet and hospital corners. Duvets are issued these days ( you lucky people). But mum is not there and you can't close the door and forget about it. 3. When you get your boots wear them 3 times a week at least. Ensure you polish them and get a quality polish like Kiwi. 4. Running go running at least 3 times a week for at least an hour and run on hills and uneven ground. This will get you used to PT. 5. Get used to the idea your wrong there right. Your training staff have years of experience and know all the short cuts. You will never win so don't even try. Just yes sir no sir 6. Enjoy it it will be an experience it will be hard and you may will want to quit. But if its the career you want dig in give 100% and never ever quit. It WILL be the best job you ever have . Your training staff are not looking for superman but they are looking for effort and teamwork. Work hard and you will reap the rewards. Remember failing to prepare is preparing to fail GOOD LUCK 👍

Did ITC in 2003, went straight out on ops to Iraq in 2004. Definitely wish I'd gotten fitter before joining because it really catches you out especially tabbing with weight. And to those joining who get put off by the strictness, battalion is much more chilled out and you make everlasting friends.

Infantrymen, once trained, are some of the most incredible people I’ve had the honour to be attached to. My experience as a combat engineer attached to 4 rifles, as a BGE, really opened my eyes to just how jaw dropping the bond within a platoon was.

5:30 bad idea. Trying to tab yourself before you know what your doing or the build up required is a quick ticket to getting injured and missing an intake. Get cv fit then let the PTIs build you up for tabbing, it should be done gradual. Your knees and back are important, do this stuff right. Edit, just carried on, my bad you caught it boss.

I think what is wonderful about this series is that you have made the lads to reflect on what they have actually learned and accomplished and that bit of critical thinking and self-reflection is transferable to what they will learn in the future and this is a massive help for their personal and professional development down the road. It's also great to see the Distancing Drill has been implemented well in HM Forces. If only half the civilian population was so disciplined we wouldn't have these COVID rates around the world. ex-Canadian officer here.

To prepare for beyond just basic, but for your life within the army the recruits are right, you 100% need to train with weight. Watch videos on "rucking, ruck marching, tabing" but do not run with the weight, you have to walk as fast as you can and gradually build it up as well as the distance. Prior to training you you'll want to be able to do 14-15 minute miles with at least 10kg worth of weight, but your CFT or AFT is 8 miles with 20kg in 2 hours. Something you're expected to be able to do later down the line. Working with weight is much more important than running itself. This is simply because if you can run, it doesn't mean you can TAB, but if you can TAB you can run. Tabing will build up your strength and leg muscles as well as your endurance and posture. TAB (tactical advance to battle) is something you better get used to, and for the lighter, shorter guys it will be the most difficult so work on this. Look into packing your kit correctly too, light stuff at the bottom, heavy at the top. Mental robustness. If you're gonna melt when someone shouts at you and cry if no one cares about your sexuality or how woke you are, don't bother trying to join and waste anyone's time. You're training to become a soldier, get a grip.

I am currently studying a PhD and would love to join the Intelligence corps. However I am torn between joing as an officer or soldier. I will be 27 when I finish my current studies. Ideally I would like to take part in 'on the ground' engagements as opposed to being confined to solely managerial administrative duties. Although I would really like to become a leader. Do intelligence officers get the opportunity to engage in COIST exercises, as is the case with intelligence corps soldiers? Thanks in advance, Great videos!

@sambell2152 3 жыл бұрын
My advice is to join as an officer. If you join as a soldier, you will find yourself in basic training with lots of 18-21 year olds whom have incredibly poor academic profiles from rough backgrounds. The army is a fantastic opportunity for people from such backgrounds to turn their lives around, but for older university educated individuals, you will probably not enjoy the very 'laddish' culture in the ranks of the army. It would be a bit like a law graduate going to work on a building site with scaffolders and bricklayers, it is a huge culture clash and you will probably feel out of place. As a PHD student, officer roles would likely suit you much better.

I'm thinking of joining the army in an engineering role (was thinking maybe armourer, vehicle or aircraft mechanic, something along those lines so I can later apply my skills and knowledge to the civilian world should I decide to back out later down the line). I want to join as an alternative to going to university because I feel like in the army you learn stuff that you just can't learn anywhere else, also I think it's a good way to improve upon myself as a person both mentally and physically. What are your thoughts? Should I go through with it? What are some skills I might need? Is it a good idea? Etc... I wanted to visit a recruitment centre this summer to ask a whole bunch of questions but due to covid that wasn't possible...

@willus2124

@@obi-wankenobi9187 well first of all congratulations with getting through phase one! Now as for my questions (I know that different roles might have slightly different requirements, so to make things easier let's say that I'm applying for the same role as you): Do you need to take some maths or physics test to be able to join the engineers? What about grades from school or degrees from university? Do you need to submit those? Can a soldier transition to officer further down his/her career and if so what are the requirements? Are the physical standards for engineers lower than the infantry for example? Is there a high demand for engineers in the army right now?
@obi-wankenobi9187
@obi-wankenobi9187 3 жыл бұрын
Willus 212 em well, you don’t need anything past an A level to join engineers UNLESS you wanna join as an officer, which yes you can do down the line if you so please, which is my plan, and bring your grade certification with you just to have it, but unless you failed maths or English you don’t have to do much in terms of education, you get the odd essay , but they’re easy, 2000 word essay etc. But that was for basic training not for engineers. Also the physical aspect for engineers of very close to infantry, if not to the same standard, cause at the end of the day, you go out with them you’re usually 3rd person into a compound when you have blew a hole in the side.

@@obi-wankenobi9187 Nice, well thank you very much for your time. Just one last thing: Is there any way I can maybe talk to a recruiter directly? Maybe video chat or something? I've seen the ways you can contact them on the army website but I don't think I can call... (I live in Portugal but I have British nationality and a passport to prove it)

You do get the choice to change what date you want to go to basic training, yesterday the army rung me asking if I would like to go for the 28th October intake for the Irish guards and I asked if I could go for the second intake ask the first was a few days after my 18th and now I’m going in for the 15th November so I guess I’m some way you can change what date you go in.

I'm going to Pirbright for my faze 1 in 2 weeks I got a 6.7 on my beeb test so I'm going in as a cook but I really want to be 3 Scots for that I need a 6.8 minimum so I guess what I'm asking is at what point do I get to change regment or do I have to stick with what I've got even if Im able to meet the infinity requirements once I get through the faze 1?

Chris Jones it’s not silly 😂there’s still more in training which will decide what to bring so near the end once you’re out you can explain the ons and out rather then someone thinking oh he’s only just started he won’t know anything, like when you hit phase 2, I understand what you’re coming from, the food is better in trianing then it is in reg in my eyes
