I liked what you said about knowing your horse. I think it is important to have a bond where you trust each other, since x-country can be a challenge in terms of trust. When I was planning to take my pony cross country, I knew she had never done it before, so I practised riding through puddles, small to huge, in all gaits, and that helped me, as she felt confident in water. I did not practice ditches, because natural ditches can have unsafe banks, and so i wanted her experience with them to be good from the start. We went to 2 venues to practice, and then did our first ODE where we came 3rd. Over half my class got eliminated in the xc, but my pony trusted me, and jumped even though she did look at some things.

Well done you! Yes, to reiterate, by 'ditches' I mean water trays, in the school, you are quite right, do NOT practice on 'natural ditches' because they can be unsafe.
