We had a sunny warm weeken so we refreshed our raised beds and garden boxes with new organic soil and compost. The old used soil is being added to our flower boxes in the front yard and what is left over we will recycle by adding it to our fresh compost bin.I can't wait till we plant all our veggie starts, it's looking like March 24th will be a good weekend for that. We built a cucumbers arched trellis yesterday with cattle panel, it's going to be great.

I have gone to the no till/dig method of gardening. Last Fall I covered my raised beds with about four inches of mulch. I have already started planting in zone 8a. I have simply moved the mulch out of the way and planted both seed and seedlings. The mulch prevented the usual weeds that I normally need to remove, and has kept the soil moist and friable with plenty of earthworms. I sprang for some Vermisterra castings and worm tea that you have had great results with and so far my seedlings seem to like it. Cannot wait to see your garden this season. It is always beautiful and productive. Take care.
@CaliKim296 жыл бұрын
Hey Joe - no till is super easy - I bet you had a ton of worms too. Glad you are loving the Vermisterra worm castings and tea as much as I am! There are so many ways to get the job done - thanks so much for sharing what works for you!
@poupard10006 жыл бұрын
Joe...I'd be interested to see how things grow for you with the no till/dig method. My husband likes that because he is very much into the mycorrhizae in the soil. I am particularly wondering about how carrots grow when you don't loosen the soil for their downward growth.
@brandon38726 жыл бұрын
Robin Poupard If you want perfectly straight carrots it's necessary to till the soil and remove any stones or other hard things that are in the soil, but if you don't care about the shape of your carrots it might not be necessary.

Hello Oliver - yes, the hardest work is up front, it is a great way to stay in shape. Once the veggies start growing, it's just making sure they get enough water, drip irrigation is the key for me - that's the next episode. How's your spring garden coming along? Thanks for watching!

Hi Kim!! I'm just outside of New Orleans and can't wait to get by babies planted in the ground!! We had an extremely warm February and it was so tempting to plant outside!!! I'm glad I restrained myself though, since now our weather has seemingly returned to normal and we're having temps down into the 30's and 40's at night. I have been doing the same as you, trying to get the beds all prepped and ready for my babies when the time is right. Can't wait!!!! Love your videos!!! PS...I hope I'm not the only one that calls their seedlings their babies!! You just can't help but feel that way about them when you've started them from seeds!!!

Something viewers might want to look into if they can’t compost at home is community compost programs. Our city collects yard debris and grass clippings all year as part of our waste management service, and it all gets composted by the city. They then offer the compost for sale by the truckload (it’s like $10 for 2 cubic yards) or you can fill a small bucket or plastic tote for free. I know other cities in our area have similar programs. Worth looking into if large scale composting isn’t something folks can manage!

Kim, It is bad to work the soil when it is too wet which can easily happen where I am. I would say in colder climates you can work the soil when it is thawed AND dry enough that a handful of soil will stay together if lightly squeezed. But that doesn't drip moisture if tightly squeezed.. Maybe someone else has a better description of how to determine the proper timing for a colder climate garden. I love the amendments you suggest. This is my first year with a worm bin and I'm really hoping I have enough castings for my tomatoes and peppers!
