I have had an interest in making coin rings for years. I have watched many KZbin videos on how to do it. I have made over a dozen clad coin rings from quarters, half dollars and one-dollar coins. They all turned out great. I surprised myself at how well they turned out right out of the gate. However, I attempted to make my first silver ring from a 1945, 90% silver, George Washington quarter. The quarter was worn, and the reed edge had a slight ding. I annealed the coin and punched a 3/8” hole using a self-centering punch. Cleaned the inside cut edge with a deburring tool, half-round file, and 1k sandpaper. Re-annealed the coin and placed the coin in a 17degree die. Centered it up, placed a 17degree cone in the hole and slowly made the first fold. Re-annealed the coin, placed it back in the die and slowly pressed the cone into the die and folded the reed edge around the cone. Removed the coin from the die and noticed the coin was a little wonky on the reed edge and had a small crack in the wonk. At this point I figured the damage was done and decided to see just how far I could push my luck. I re-annealed the coin and stretched it to a size seven. Re-annealed the coin and sized both edges to a size five. Re-annealed the coin and attempted to resize back up to a size seven… That’s when it popped. Question being, was it the coin or was it me? Thanks, in advance!

The Coin for sure. Most of us call Washingtons "Wonkingtons".... Sound like you did it all right, but sometimes you just get a bum coin...

Great explanation Paul. That was one of the hardest thing for me to decide when I got started. You don't want to low-ball yourself and at the same time give your time, skill, hard work away for free and it does take time to learn the craft and the only way to get better is practice which I have more to learn myself. Have a good day.

I almost lost my mind when I heard you say “$26 per 1921 Morgan silver dollar!” And then I saw this video was made in 2020 and hat makes since. Still hurts when you look back at how cheap a good looking coin was back then. But makes sense. Great ring. Awesome eye for detail and the job. Congrats man.

How did you determine the pricing at 10 cent for each item that was used ? Maybe i missed that at some point in the video, if not would you be kind enough to give an explanation how to determine pricing those items used. Please and thank you.

I have a question. If I anneal a coin, can I leave it for a period of time and work on it later? If I annealed a coin and didn't get around to working with it for say a week or so do I need to anneal it again or does it stay pliable until I work it?
@pauly7218
@pauly7218 2 жыл бұрын
Yes. Annealing changes the molecular structure of the metal. It only goes back the way it was by working it. Hope that helps...

Hey Paul,, greetings from the Great White North! Just wondering how you would price an inexpensive coin ring made from say a quarter that doesn't have any significant collector value. All the best and thanks.
@pauly7218
@pauly7218 2 жыл бұрын
Use the same pricing system but essentially just drop cost to a few bucks, and for me, I would also drop my labor a bit as these small rings are fast and easy to make.
