As a English speaker to me Dutch sounds like a mix of Norwegian/Danish and German. I also speak Spanish as well and for me it's so hard to tell Dutch, German, Danish, Swedish and Norwegian apart like if u gave me a blind test I wouldn't be able to distinguish any of these languages. English is pretty easy to spot since the every day vocabulary in English is more romance influenced, plus English has 0 guttural sounds and has a J, Th, W and soft Ch and G sound which other germanic languages don't have plus English is softer so it makes it easier to spot.

Being a German speaker, this is like listening to a radio while trying to tune it into a station, but not being able to. I learn the subtitles and then close my eyes and try to hear it, and with each try the radio is tuned better and the white noise fades :) Excellent episode! Bedankt!

Uvular pronunciations appear to be gaining ground in the Randstad.[19] Syllable-finally, it may be vocalized to [ɐ], much as in German. This is more common in the (south)eastern areas (Limburg, southeast Brabantian, Overijssel). The coastal dialects of South Holland produce a voiced uvular fricative [ʁ]. The retroflex approximant [ɻ] or "bunched approximant" is found at the end of a syllable in the pronunciation of some speakers in the Netherlands, especially those from the Randstad, but not in Belgium. Ik vind ‘hallo iedereen’ raar klinken als begroeting en vraag mij af of dat wel goed Nederlands is. Ik zou als moedertaalspreker zelf eerder ‘hallo allemaal’ zeggen. Gevoelsmatig gebruik ik ‘iedereen’ als je op alle personen afzonderlijk let en dat benadrukt. Zoals iedereen doet mee ( dus zonder uitzondering)

Although you listed p, t & k as letters pronounced the same as in English, are they not unaspirated and more like the same letters in most European languages: ie lacking the extra puff of air we English speakers use?

@@johnsilverstein9862 That the Dutch s is "not at all" pronounced like the English one, is something I don't hear in my everyday life in the Netherlands. The "s" in Dutch "super" is exactly the same as in English "same", to give just one example. :) And the difference between the V and the W in Dutch is much bigger than the differences of the s, which mostly just happen automatically because of euphony. So you don't have to really learn it, it'll just happen automatically or you will absorb it. I hope you enjoy our content. :)

The different ways of pronouncing the ‘sh’ sound, are similar in Norwegian 🤔 They have a variety of ways of making the ‘sh’ sound. For example: sj, skj, kj and sometimes just k on it’s own. Otherwise Dutch seems to have a lot in common with German: both vocabulary and sentence order. By the way, I am Australian. I was an exchange student in Norway for a year when I was a teenager. My father actually migrated from Germany (Bavaria) after the war, but he didn’t teach us any German. I have studied German at university recently, but my Norwegian is still much better than my German 😊

The vowel is a schwa in some variants (like in Flemish) and a short "e" sound in other ones! The "h" is normally pronounced, but it can happen that people drop it while speaking fastly! But Dutch people do this all the time. 😂

Depends on where you live. In Flemish or southern dutch the ”h” is pronounced followed by a ”schwa” prononciation of the “e”, where I live the “h” is pronounced followed by a short “e” or somtimes the “h” is dropped followed by a schwa “e”

"Lek wordt óók kort uitgesproken, maar dit keer met een korte "e"-klank. - We didn't stated that the words "je" and "de" have a short e, but that the sound is pronounced short: and this is true, the schwa in Dutch is a short sound (so [ə] and not [ə:]).The second sentence should actually clarify the whole issue. But I can understand that we could have been formulating this two sentences in a better way. Thanks for your feedback!

De tweede "g" in "bagage" en "garage" heeft een Franse uitspraak, maar de eerste "g" heeft een Nederlandse uitspraak. Ik geloof dat de "w" in twaalf heeft de dezelfde uitspak als de "w" in "twelve". Bij [6:21] hoor ik geen verschil in het uitspak van de letters "g" en "j", en tussen "v" en "w". Dat is nog een moeite voor mij. Ik geloof dat de video is in Enschede opgenomen. (Ik zag "Danel Optiek" bij [0:13], en de winkel staat in Enschede volgens Google.)

The ‘w’ has two different pronunciations. The one shown in the video (which is the pronunciation you’ll hear the most) and then there’s the ‘w’ that sounds like in English ‘well’. This one is heard mostly in the south (including Belgium) and Suriname. The different pronunciations don’t mix: a speaker will use the one or the other but not both.

Ik merk dat de mensen in zo een kleine land als Nederland ( en ook België ) zo vele verschillene dialecten hebben, dat ik niet zo goed weet, wat nu de standaard is. Soms luister ik heet of hejt, de mensen zeggen de -n aan de end van de infinitief of niet, is leuk nu löuk of lök? En met de r heb je drie verschillene outspraakformen: de rollende r, de goise-r com els americans en de duitse r dat een beetje zoals de franse is. Ik heb geen idee wat nu standard is.

In België en het oosten van Nederland zeg je "heet" en "lök" en spreek je de n aan het eind van een woord als "lopen" altijd uit. In de Randstad klinken de "ee", "oo" en "eu" als een tweeklank en zeg je bijvoorbeeld "heejt", "oowpen" en "leuwk". Ook wordt de -n aan het eind van het werkwoord daar vaak weglaten. De R aan het begin van een lettergreep is in noord Nederland en België rollend en in het midden en zuiden van Nederland net als de Duitse R achterin de keel. Aan het eind van de lettergreep kun je de R op alle drie de manieren zeggen. Het ging niet per se om de betekenis van de woorden, maar om de uitspraakmogelijkheden van de letter J. Die komt in dit woord voor en er zijn mensen die dit woord gebruiken, maar je hebt zeker gelijk, het woord "baan" wordt meer gebruikt dan het woord "job". :)

Niet heel handig om bij korte en lange ‘e’ als voorbeeld veer (ee+r) te nemen. Dat is anders dan bij lek - leek. De ee in veer klinkt eerder als een uitgerekte ‘i’.

The Dutch will be very quick to correct you if they think you aren't pronouncing it right. Meanwhile they can't even pronounce Namaste or chakra the right way. And, they know nothing about their colonial history. They think Indonesia was the only colony they've had. Meanwhile they were in India since 1625. And now they know nothing about Hindustani people

@@pluijzer o ja en het is dit hond en deze huis.. het feit dat deze taalfout vaker gebruikt wordt maakt het niet minder een taalfout.. en degene die probeert een taal te onderwijzen zou zich daar nog bewuster van moeten zijn! keer is een geslachtelijk/niet onzijdig woord en is derhalve aanwijzend deze en niet dit.punt.

En bij de-woorden horen normaal gesproken de aanwijzende voornaamwoorden deze en die. Dat zou dus pleiten voor deze keer en die keer. @@464nescio6 Ik ben het met u eens dat het belangrijk is het goede voorbeeld te geven en bedank u voor uw tip. Toch ben ik het met dit voorbeeld niet met u eens. Als uitdrukking gaat het gebruik van 'dit keer' meer dan 200 jaar terug en maakt nu officieel deel uit van de Nederlandse taal. Online is het tegendeel ook niet te vinden. Ik begrijp uw gevoel. Ik word ook vaak kriebelig wanneer taalfouten inburgeren. Toch is taal in beweging. Wanneer het gebruik van een expressie afwijkt van de regel is het de regel die achterloopt. Deze wordt uiteindelijk ook aangepast. Veel van wat nu gezien wordt als correct en formeel taalgebruik werd eens als een grove taalfout gezien.

@@katjavertelina Dit keer is een ingeburgerde taalfout. Dit is hinderlijk. Als het vaak gebruikt wordt.. zoals bijvoorbeeld :"U heeft betaald".. terwijl als de regels gevolgd zouden worden het zou moeten zijn.. U hebt.. Ik ben geen fan van het overboord gooien van regels omdat een paar gekkies het anders zeggen.. wat zeggie as je valt dan leggie.. wordt gebezigd en begrepen.. maar moet je dat aan anderen leren?
