It's an easy way to teach pronunciation , but if you can learn phonetics the rules for this is much simpler : 1) use / s / after voiceless consonant sounds . 2 ) use /z / after voiced consonant sounds and vowel sounds ( missed here ) and 3 ) use / iz / after sybilant sounds .

True, but it's a useful way to learn if you are learning/teaching something like elementary or pre-intermediate english level, after those levels, it is more useful to learn/teach the international phonetic alphabet and its rules (for example, the cambridge pronunciation in use series is very good because it tells you about the differences between american and british english) and then so what you say here ;)

You can ensure whether the word ending in 's' is 'ss' or 'z' by placing a word starting with a vowel next to it and saying then together. For instance 'send the dogs away' and 'cats in the house'.

if you ask me, your teaching's pronouciacion is very helpful to be excellent speaking like native also, your natural speaking train my ear to listen how does native speaker say fluently. speaking of pronounciation, it is little bit terrible for me and somebody who doesn't concern for it. And as you saying about alphabet spelling and pronounciation, I know little bit differenciation the sound between 's", "z" and "iz". So, it is very useful and lovely teaching.

To remember it better, you can simply remember this: you make the S ending if a word ends with a 'p' (peeps), a 't' (seats), a 'k' (peeks), an 'f' (cliffs) or the aired 'th' (clothes). For all the other cases, you make a zzzzz sound at the end.

I like how almost every american girl looks the same and the only way you can notice a difference is by listening to them to speak, the differences aren't in the skin, but in the brain. Thanks for your wonderful lessons, I learn so much from you.

Hi Emma, I have a question. I thought that the ending -s in "lays" should be a /z/, but as I checked even on the internet it's mostly /s/ to my ears. And yeah even with "ears" I've heard different people from both the US & UK, they seem to have different versions as well. So are there anyspecial rules on this?
