I have followed your channel for several years. Last fall we watched you first Blackberry video and immediately began rooting several Boysenberry and Blackberry branches into two pots. Through the fall and winter they developed great root structure. We cut away the pots and planted them in our bed in January. I am really pleased to see how your buds turn upward. It will be great to see our new plants growing in the spring.

Great! I am so relieved! :-) Of course, my blackberries send out runners too, though not as many as my Heritage Raspberries do. @MikeKincaid793 жыл бұрын
You're welcome, Brian, and I'm glad you enjoy it. As long as the parent plant is cold hardy to your area, you shouldn't have any problem with the cuttings surviving. Did you leave it outside over winter or greenhouse, and did you water it often during winter? Thanks
@MikeKincaid79 Жыл бұрын
In the hoop house is essentially outside. The ends are open all winter and all the plants freeze hard as a rock inside. Blackberries can take extremely low temps and you have nothing to worry about with them. You can leave them outside, in a hoop house, on a back porch, in an unheated shed, or wherever else you want, as long as it doesn't warm up and break dormancy through the winter. For that reason, I wouldn't put it in a green house.

Upside down?! That's interesting! Hey Mike I live about an hour south of you and recently got a load of fine fir bark after watching your potting mix vids. It contains a good amount of super fines which I'm concerned will wash to the bottom of pots and fill the voids and lead to rot. Does yours have super fines? I sifted some through a window screen and removed some micro fines but took forever. Can I use it as is? The pile is also quite warm.
@MikeKincaid794 жыл бұрын
Yes, use it as is! Mine is the same way. You want the super fine, all the way up to the fine. If it was too coarse then the water would just drain right through. Test for yourself, just fill a 2 gallon pot with the bark and put a watering wand over it and see if it drains well.

Hi Mike - I know when you root cuttings, you stress to keep them in an inert substance, a humid environment, and out of direct sunlight. When you "layer" it though into another pot, won't it get direct sunlight if it stays by the parent plant until it roots?
@MikeKincaid793 жыл бұрын
Yes, but that's a little different. The layer is already acclimated to the location it's at, whether that be shade or full sun, and it's still attached to the parent plant so it will continue to get all the moisture and nutrients it needs from mom.

@MikeKincaid794 жыл бұрын
Depends on what type of blackberry. If it's a floricane blackberry then it will produce in 2 years on the previous seasons growth. If it's a primocane then it may produce the following year after rooting. Most common are floricane.
@carlschnackel30515 ай бұрын
You didn't really torture the plant. It's pretty hard to kill a blackberry. I had one in a 30 gallon self-wicking pot, that was leaking, and all the water would run out of the reservoir. There was a huge split in the bottom. I built another self-wicking pot, and dug out a big chunk of the root ball to transplant into the new pot, and planted it there. I dumped everything out of the old pot, repaired the split, lining it with heavy plastic for insurance, and filled it back up. There were plenty of roots left in the pot from the previous plant, so I threw them back into the "newly repaired" pot, and covered them up with soil. It wasn't long before I had new blackberry seedlings growing up from the odd pieces of root that were left in the pot. Right now, there are about 15 to 20 seedlings that are about 6 inches tall, in that repaired pot, just because I threw the roots back into the pot that didn't get transplanted with the previous plant. Blackberries are pretty tough. If they're left alone, they will completely take over a field. Make sure you get the ones you want because it's almost impossible to kill them after they're established.
@jimrenderer66274 жыл бұрын
2 questions. Will the new growth have the same orientation as the mother plant or continue to start new branches upside down ? Or could you have taken a cutting the same as any other plant. (Bonus question, what about air layering ? )
@MikeKincaid794 жыл бұрын
You could definitely air layer them. never tried a cutting but I'm sure it would root.
@cvdinjapan79354 жыл бұрын
The first branches will appear underneath where the old leaves were... But after it pushes out those first sets, the next set of branches will appear on top of the leaves, like normal... It will not continue to be upside down forever.

@@MikeKincaid79 Wonderful! Thanks for the quick response! If that's the case, I think I will wait on cutting it off from the main plant unless it's absolutely necessary to move it.
