I had a can of VHT ready to do my truck taillights. Never even dawned on me to wet sand or clear coat. 8:00 I had 2000grit at home. They turned out fantastic. Thank u for this video!

Yeah never occurred to me either. I did this on my chevy only cleaned them with alcohol did 4 coats to get a dark smoke look and 2 layers of clear coat looked absolutely amazing. Honestly as long as you know how to use spray paint it'll be fine without sanding

Yes that is correct! You could probably omit the first wet sand if you are in a time crunch.

Does this count as tinting in terms of legality in Cali? or would tinting refer specifically to something vinyl/polyester wrapped?

I’m not sure if this would be considered a tint or not, I believe just is just a clear spray paint with a darker pigment. But you can also control how dark or light your lights will come out with with how many coats you put on.

Yes one coat will be fine if you don’t want it to dark. But I don’t think you would see it as much! As for clear coat, I would recommend any type of automotive clear coat, especially something with UV protection so it does not yellow!

Depending on how many layers you put, if you only do a couple, it won’t effect it much, but if you put multiple layers it can start to block the light!

I believe I let the VHT dry for about an hour before wet sanding it, and the clear coat I let sit over night before wet sanding and polishing.

I just take some Meguiars polish for plastic, and a microfiber pad, and I just polish it by hand, because I don’t have a polisher!

I got a run on my first layer of clear coat. How long do I need to wait before sanding it?

Typically you would want to wait about 24 hours. But depends on temperature and humidity. I would just make sure it’s not tacky to the touch, and you should be fine to start wet sanding.

I believe I was using Brown scotch brite, which is not too aggressive, but enough to scuff the surfaces!

Should last a pretty long time! I had mine for about 2 years and they drilled looked like new! Only reason I don’t have it anymore is because I upgraded my tail lights!

I’m just running a cheap set as well. And they do the same thing. There is no fix for this issue. Other then some people make decoders for these lights and all it does it make them run at full brightness all the time!

So after you apply your vht let’s say two coats each within 10-15 min from each coat what is wait time to sand ? And finally when to sand after applying 2-3 clear coats? Asking and will do testing want to offer this my business and will ofcourse do ima practice twilights but would like to know your ultimate thoughts would like ti get it done within that same dat turnaround ?

I would say I would wait about an hour, for the VHT coats to wet sand. But To be honest, you might not need to do it depending how well the VHT went down. I sanded it because it seemed pretty rough and had some imperfections. And for the clear coat I would at least a minimum of 6-12 hours. Depending on how cold and humid the weather is. But if you can wait even longer that would be better. Same day turn around might be pushing it, unless you really start early, and can finish kind of late.

@@THATLTRFOUR50 yeah either if you can keep the lights for over a day would probably better. I still like to tint my taillights, also this way works much better on very complex shaped tail lights. Where your typical tint won’t stretch on certain angles. I would say many people like the tinted look, they just don’t won’t to pay for the expensive price for after market tail lights. So if you could offer at a decent price. Where it’s still much cheaper then nice after market lights, but still offers a nice tint for less then half of a new set of tail lights.

1 coat will be very light, maybe 2 coats you will be able to see the difference from the OEM color. But I would recommend any automotive clear coat with UV protection.

I am not sure I understand your question. If you are asking if you need to disconnect the lights from the car, you do not need too. But it makes it easier so you don’t get any over spray on the car.

Preferably an automotive clear coat. Either 2K clear, or some type of clear gloss for the cars paint or wheels. Because this clear coat has other protections usually including UV, so it won’t turn yellow.

Yeah people do that, you just have to be more careful when you do that, because this doesn’t come off your paint. So just got to tape off and mask off really good!

If I finish following the steps, and I decide I want the tail lights to be darker after i polish them, can I just west sand them and go over it with another layer of VHT and clear coat? Or do I need to remove all of it?

If you polish it up, and decide you want it darker. I would atleast give them a quick sand with scotch brite to rough up the surface a little so the paint sticks better. But you should be able to tell when your applying the VHT, if it’s dark enough or not, and then just add an additional coat before the clear coat.
