How to prove Sephardic ancestry. A brief introduction for people thinking of applying for a Portuguese passport based on Sephardic Jewish ancestry (the offer has now effectively closed). Historically there are three groups of Sephardic Jews: the Megorashim in parts of Morocco and Algeria; the Eastern Sephardim ('Spanish Jews') of Turkey, Greece and the Balkans, and the Western Sephardim ('Portuguese Jews') of the Atlantic World, including London, New York and Jamaica. If you belong to one of these communities, applying for a Portuguese passport is possible. If you are Latin American or Latino and believe you have Sephardic ancestors, you may spend a lot of money and get nowhere. This site is no friend to the crypto-Judaism / bnei anusim movement and strongly supports evidence-based genealogy. You do not need a lawyer to apply for a Portuguese passport based on Sephardic ancestors. If you do use a lawyer, ask your embassy in Lisbon or the Portuguese Ordem dos Advogados for advice.
