In northern kung fu, we keep our arm slightly bent, to keep from being locked with chin na, and overextending it. We don't twist our arms during punching either, the fist is verticle with straight throws. No good use in twisting whatsoever, like you said. In Baji Quan, we throw raking blows, mostly downward to open cuts, but it's still a verticle fist with slight bend in elbow to keep a lock or self inflicted injury to the elbow. Sometimes fighters block and grab your wrist, like in mantis or eagle claw, then you must quickly knock the grab off by sliding the other hand and arm along the grabbed arm and quickly yanking the grabbed wrist back in. This is to knock the grab off, at the same time using the knock off arm to land a blow, while the other comes back in for guard.
