This punch is not telegraphed in real speed, depending on the person throwing it. Watch in slow motion rocky Marciano, joe Frazier, mike Tyson; this is exactly how they threw hooks. I boxed amateur in the 70's and 80's - this is exactly how hooks are taught. Great vid!

Great video bro! I wish I had seen this a few months ago. I spent time trying to learn Tyson's punching technique by watching him in slow mo and realized precisely what you said-but i describe like so- pivot the foot twist the hips and snap the shoulder together but delay the arm. By delaying the arm you get precisely the elastic response of the pecs. very well and concisely put.
@WaffleIronSunday
@WaffleIronSunday 11 жыл бұрын
Alright, you win. I'm suscribed. Excellent videos so far, looking forward to learning more. Not sure how often you read these comments, but I was curious if you could do something for right handers who have to be southpaw because of a ankle fusion? It's a stretch, I know.
@FightSmartTrav
@FightSmartTrav 10 жыл бұрын
When I learned how to fight lefty, it was just a lot of patience... I just went SLOW making sure that my footwork was technically correct, and then before I knew it, it just made sense to me instead of feeling absurd. If you already know how to do it one way, switching will be a lot easier since your body already fundamentally understands the movements.
@Jon-ov4nc

a big mistake a lot of people do is over trai n oneside, they let their right hand or left hand lead. everytime you do something with the right arm, repeat it on the left arm. this is why kung fu and karate fighter go up and down a hall doing left and right over and over again. you dont want a muscular imbalance, it makes you weak.
@Jon-ov4nc
@Jon-ov4nc 9 жыл бұрын
Having the ability to swap between like left and right stance opens up the ability to attack on twice as many angles. I don't know why boxers don't do this, im not a boxer but I guess it's because it's for 1v1; turning efficiently to face a second or third opponent requires changing between left and right.. the way I see it, it's one more skill in the tool box
@Jon-ov4nc
@Jon-ov4nc 8 жыл бұрын
Daniel Malloy the main use of changing stance is for kicking, once you hrow the rear leg and knock an opponent bqck you hqve to step forward on the leg if you want to keep close and be able to lay into them. use low kicks and sweeps as well in the street, they make nice little distractions. in street fights i usually weight for my opponent to attack before engaging in grappling. once in the clinch i just use elbows and knees, throws, and joint and muscle manipulations. to be honest i spend most of my time fighting southpaw even though im right handed, the reason being that my strongest leg is forward for kicks. i change back to an orthodox stance if they start strying to sweep my right leg using right leg front sweeps, its because they hit the front of the ankle and shin which hurts more than it hitting my calf muscle. they are more likely to sweep me but ive trained myself to draw the left leg into a chamber and counter with a lead leg side kick as they attempt the sweep.

I just re-watched this video because I received a post notice and one thing said was "similar to big rubber band on the reflex so is the hook" except this violates a principle "100 miles in 200 miles out", a theory espoused by Bruce Lee, the Chinese call this "fa-jing" or explosive power. Interestingly this provides maximum power, but also better defense because when you strike someone their first instinct is to strike back, so withdrawing twice as fast as you enter can prevent your opponent from striking. This principle of 100/200 is easier understood and applied with a jab/cross than a hook because of the stretch reflex principle you so aptly described with the hook, but is still applicable. Additionally, as you know the hook flows perfectly into a cross, when using the hook/cross combination this 100/200 is still applicable on both punches, but can be minimized on the hook and fully applied on the cross.

the video of him not punching but just getting out of the way of punches is amazing, the people in the street get so tired from throwing missed punches that they give up. The is hilarious, they get so tired from punching and missing that they give up and he keeps going and going but never punching back. A few moments you could see where he could ruin their life but he told them he wouldn't hit them. lol it was awesome video, go watch it.

Sir! I've been having problems with my hooks for years!!! And I never knew what I was doing wrong! I did the right steps, pivoted on the feet, rotated the hip, relaxed the shoulders, etc. and my hooks weren't horrible, but they never popped. They were my weakest punches. That little detail of leading with the chest muscle and using the recoil was all that I was missing! I did some shadow boxing right after the video and tested it out on the heavy bag now and my hooks have double the power they had before! Thank you so so much!

For the record, I'm not trying to take anything away from the video, rather than I'm expanding upon it. An effective punch is one with snap. In the sport of boxing, a boxer can double up punches with one hand using speed, power, and accuracy by keeping punches short. You really only need to drive through your target by 2 inches or so to break bones. And this elastic effect is a total body thing that comes with fluidity and well trained form through repetition. Love the videos by the way!

I know this is three years late but my boxing coach did confirm this with me. You want your body to go first, the punch comes almost simultaneously. It's very quick and adds more power. However dipping the opposite shoulder first isn't always nessecary but...throwing a punch with the opposite arm already sets that pivot movement up.

My "kind" is that of someone who doesn't just spew the things he was taught in a course. I back up every technique I show, and everything that I teach. Me offering to accept you into my gym and put you to sleep is an exhibition of confidence... I will demonstrate on your head and body the efficacy of my teachings. I walk my talk... can you? We are in agreement on your breakdown of hook form, if you applied elastic recoil to that, you would have extra power.
@ncshuriken
@ncshuriken 10 жыл бұрын
This seems like a good technique, but the first thing that came to mind is that those few long seconds you spend winding up for the hook, your opponent will have time to straight punch you in the face at least once, maybe twice if he's quick. My old Karate 'sensei' used to make a joke that "while that thug is pulling back to swing at you, you'll have time to go home, have a drink, then come back and hit the guy before he's even finished reeling back" and it does make sense because hooks are only quick once they've gotten their full momentum. This is just Shotokan theory but I've heard a good few people say that hooks are dangerous to use because 1you have less accuracy, 2 you leave yourself wide open, 3 you give the other guy more time to react before your fist is even moving forward. However I've also heard hooks are best for knockouts because they're easier to connect with the jaw or temple. I guess you just have to be VERY careful with when & who you use them on.

***** "....If you watch street fights or MMA/UFC fights, you'll see how the theory of karate falls a bit flat..." Lyoto Machida, a Shotokan karate man has done quite well adhering to his original martial art at least for his stand up striking. His counter punching, kicking off blocks (Mark Munoz, Ryan Bader come to mind) really something to watch. Georges St-Pierre would be another one (Kyokushin kaikang) although both fighters evolved into well rounded fighters Karate is still a component of their fighting.

I don't think our ligaments behave the same way as those bands. Potential energy isn't stored to that degree when we move our limbs far from equilibrium. The basic idea behind more impact force is to try generating more momentum in order to transfer that energy to the opponent.

After boxing and teaching boxing for 30 years your hook and body motion sucks. Hook power comes form the snap of the front knee and twist of the front foot that is where the twist starts...try it before you start shooting off you mouth. We are from Coatesville Pa. where many professional fighters came from.
@michellesullivan3927
@michellesullivan3927 10 жыл бұрын
That is a bold statement you made in regards to how to throw a hook with the snap of the front knee and twist of the foot considering hooks Mike Tyson throws his feet do not twist in fact they are very well planted. I am not real sure how people communicate there in PA however generally intelligent non egotistical people that correct people if they see they may be doing something incorrect teach them what they may know with a teacher / student type fashion. Next time you critique someone you may want to consider dropping your pompous attitude,,,,try it before you start shooting off your mouth.

Hell yea... I have a million of them on my website, and they're free. Specifically for drills go to How To Fight Now DOT com, Register for free, go to Free Videos -> Basics -> Drills for a knockout cross. It's right beneath the video about adding cross power using "maximum fiber recruitment". There are a ton of lessons on there, so have a look around!

EVERYONE READ.....Great stuff. But isn't it crazy, we live in a world where videos on you tube clearly show...titles that start with "How to punch harder,,,,", "Prison fights"..."Mob Hits"...."man gets stabbed"..." Seagal's Aikido secrets"....How to break somebody's _____ "....all of these titles get views often in the hundreds of thousands or more. But titles dealing with helping people, and words like "volunteering",..."bringing peace to your city"..."being a good parent"....these titles get not 10% of what violence videos get. Does this truly mean that humans really have more interest in violence than anything else? I dont buy people do martial arts because they love it. If all of us knew we'd never get into a fight the rest of our lives...how many of us would train in martial arts? My teacher took that poll in class one day..not one student raised his hand.

I actually enjoy boxing, I feel it inside me just like I enjoy motocross, i am not watching this to learn how to defend myself from the world, but instead how to better myself at something that i enjoy doing. I don't go around asking for fights, if i fight i bring it to the ring where i know i'll be able to be safe and yet still do what i love to do

Used this technique about 2 nights ago on a guy who was harrowing one of my coworkers. Let's just say that the hook is very fast especially once all that energy is released . he was Rdy for it, but the tension you build up once you have a full stretch is dynamic. It didn't matter he went to sleep right there on the spot before hitting the ground. Thx my friend, I subbed awhile back and I appreciate all the tips.

i am teaching each lesson i find of yous to my 15 year old daughter, as a 43 year old who's way out of touch with modern mma technique, i find your vids provide me with great lessons to then pass on to her, this one is a real gem, after 1 week of working on this she was able to knock me from my stance with her hook to the body, i was wondering if you had advice on a beginning fighters workout for her?

Why not just couple that shoulder drop with a head movement that brings you in close, or a right straight that also brings your shoulder forward? You will absolutely lose power if you have less distance for your strike, that's just simple physics. You can make this work, you just have to do something to set it up... in most situations, a slip or a right punch will suffice.

Enjoying your video's a lot. I've been doing MMA for a few years now but sometimes the little things like this just don't get taught, and I've always felt like a powerful guy but i've been missing the power I should have in my hooks. Going to work on this, I'm pretty optimistic right now.

This shit is freaking 100% true and works. My coach told me the same technique for hooks and plus, I got a god gifted punching power so I used that as an advantage over the others. I put my teammate to sleep in a sparring season using this same hook technique. You'all should be learning this. Great video 👍

I don't think most of you guys understand. He is teaching the inexperienced fighter how to wind up correctly. These videos aren't meant for dudes like Paquiao or Silva, who already know this stuff. The average joe might not know that muscles act like a rubber band, or that power comes from the legs and hips. Some of this may seem basic to us experienced folks, but this is gold to a guy who is looking for a crash course in striking. It certainly isn't doing any harm to us viewers.

Have you ever heard of Jack Dempsey's book "Championship Fighting: Explosive Punching and Aggressive Defense"? I haven't read through all of it, but this series of videos seems to cover pretty much everything he does. But I think it would be cool if you found something in there that you haven't seen before (probably not very likely). And keep the videos coming, they are some of the best I have come across!

I wasn't addressing a question. And I guess since you can't figure it out, my response was meant to insinuate that we are simply better fighters than boxers, (and i love boxing). If an MMA fighter and a boxer meet, the MMA fighter wins. There ya go!
@FightSmartTrav
@FightSmartTrav 11 жыл бұрын
close your mind to something so useful, and so devastating. I bet your hooks aren't half of what they could be. Use a slip to load up the power and you have plenty of time to unwind. Try it and get back to me... I "try it" and have suceeded since 98, when I also started training.
