Wow, I've done this since forever...my writing style is so weird. I get a flow first and then fill in the blanks. Lots of times I end up w/ the last four bars of a verse written first. I thought I was weird, but I see I got company. 😆 I don't scat as fluid off the top, as you did though. Great video sir!

This is pretty much how I write everything, not just vocals. I improvise a bunch of random stuff and figure out what felt best for me. Then I flesh it out into a more concrete idea, and build on it from there. This was very well explained. Sub'd. Next question is.... A lot of people, myself included, fall back into the same patterns and flows on instinct and find it difficult to do something fresh every time. How do you develop such freedom in your flow/cadence?

So cole, rhythm is just all about landing on the kick and snare (1 and 2, 3 and 4) and cadence is just the flow and how i sound?
@ColeMizeStudios9 жыл бұрын
Ohr Rafa Exactly, you got it man! :)
@luckydoo3699 жыл бұрын
ColeMizeStudios Awesome man, you taught me well and a lot! You're great brother. You told me before in a another video that i don't need to land on a snare. Is that still good rhythm even though you don't land on every kick or snare?
@luckydoo3699 жыл бұрын
ColeMizeStudios I heard landing on the 1 and 2 isnt as importand as landing on the 4. That you should always land on the 4, meaning land on the second snare. What do you say? Is it still okay if don't land on the second or first? Is it still rhythm ? Thanks Cole!
@ColeMizeStudios9 жыл бұрын
Ohr Rafa yeah you don't have to land directly on the snare all the time. Rhythm is all about having a consistent timing that falls in line with the beat in a musical way that sounds good to the ears. Once again there is no rules to rap only techniques :)
@ColeMizeStudios9 жыл бұрын
Ohr Rafa I don't necessarily agree with that. One isn't more important than the other. It's all about the rhythm you are creating. you could create a cadence dancing around the kicks and snares if you wanted lol the kick and snare is kind of like training wheels on a bike. They are what I call anchor points and they help you know if your are on beat or not but you don't have to land on them every time in order to have rhythm. For example in this video kzbin.info/www/bejne/hYKkaY1oj6ucetk I creating rhythm and establish cadence without any drums at all! Hope this helps! :)

ColeMizeStudios Good video man, you got the concept down. Personally I run out of cadences when I rap, I feel like Ive tried them all. Could you make another video where you explain how to generate more cadences, or how to come up with ideas for cadences?
@ColeMizeStudios10 жыл бұрын
Daniel Garcia Hey Daniel thanks so much for watching and I sincerely appreciate your positive feedback! That's a very good question concerning how to come up with new Cadences. I will make that my next video. I'm glad you asked because I felt like Cadence is something that deserves several videos to expound on as it's such an essential element to rapping. So be on the look out because a new video will be dropping in a couple of days. Thanks again bro! take care! - Cole Mize
@ColeMizeStudios10 жыл бұрын
Daniel Garcia good question bro. In the music world this is called "swing". It's done very often with drums where it's ever so slightly out of time just to add a little more character to the beat. It adds a little tension and just gives an overall cool sound to the track. This is often done by rappers as well. In Krit's video if you listen carefully he rides the drums perfectly but there isn't many drums there mainly just the hi hat. But if you pay attention to the hi hat while he's rapping he is right in line with it. The kick and the snare are usually the most easy to identify when it comes to rhythm so when they are taken away the beat then seems to be wide open. Also Krit switches up his Cadences several times and makes really smooth transitions. This may also seem like he is getting off beat but he really isn't he's just saying words at different rhythms. I hope this makes some sense lol let me know if this was helpful. I may still cover it in a video tho.

@ColeMizeStudios9 жыл бұрын
Daniel Garcia Good question. I wouldn't say it's the most important but I would certainly say it's important. There is so much that goes into a track. Good music, good mix on the music, good recording on the vocals, good emotion and tone in the vocals, song writing structure, lyricism, word play, rhyme schemes, cadence, etc.. It's all important and it all adds up to make the HUGE IMPACT!! A good rap song is the sum of a lot of subtle things that adds up. I hope that helps! :) Thanks for watching and commenting and keep up the hard work! - Cole Mize

Something I wanna improve on, though I piece my songs together with random lines, so it's harder to fit what I'm trying to say into specific cadence. But I definitely keep this in mind as I piece those puzzles together. I rarely write a song as I go anymore..

Mike W Hey Mike I totally understand! Fitting rhymes with cadence can be very difficult. I will be making video tutorials all about this once I wrap up the subject of cadence and move on to writing. In the mean time always feel free to let me know what your struggles are with rapping and I will do my absolute best to try and provide you with solutions through my video tutorials. That's what i'm here for :) Speaking of which, are there any issues that you've had with cadence that I haven't previously covered in one of my videos? I'm double checking with everyone before I decide to move on to writing.

ColeMizeStudios I have yet to apply this cadence method in my songmaking, so no issues as of yet. I'm ready for the writing :P

Mike W Alright! sounds great man! Well hang tight and I should be starting those videos on writing in about 2 weeks or so. In the mean time always feel free to let me know if you have any questions and I would be glad to help out :)

ColeMizeStudios I was thinking yesterday and realized the Bruce Lee water metaphor goes well with the rap terminology "flow", though genius.com differentiates the two.. I was under the impression that cadence IS flow, am I missing something?
@ColeMizeStudios10 жыл бұрын
Mike W no you got it, cadence is flow. They are the same thing :)

This was very entertaining and informative at the same time. I've been trying to figure out ways to change my cadence on beats because what I do now is just count the bars and fit my lyrics to the beat. Problem is its always the same pace through out the whole track. I mean yeah its on beat but if there is no diversity then its less entertaining. The technique you showed with the gibberish I'm going to experiment with. Thank you bro for this knowledge.

That's Em cadence at the beggining EDIT: Yes it was sounding better than most rappers but as a composer myself I know sometimes you don't have to give resolutions like Wagner did and make other types of songs. Too much resolutions try to not give one sometimes. Make a mistake between lyrics to sound more natural. Try to force more, give more slow time to deeper your voice btw 8:00 to 8:10 bc that was sounding great
