Hey everybody, and welcome! Today we’re gonna try and bake off old messed up images from a tumbler and re-sub with new images. But not only a tumbler. We’re gonna rebake a glass can, a frosted glass can, a coffee mug, and a Walmart 25 ounce bamboo lid frosted glass tumbler! Basically, we’re gonna try and save a bunch of screw-ups!
This process is done in a dedicated convection oven. Dedicated, meaning, don’t use an oven you would use for food! If you don’t have one, try a thrift store. A convection oven is best, as the air flows around inside the oven, so there’s no need to rotate the tumbler.
Here’s the oven I use: amzn.to/3mhfSid
If you’re looking for some unique designs, be sure to check out my digital design website. www.industrialfringedesigns.com/
Here are the links to the products I used to make this video, as well as products I use for sublimation. Some are affiliate links, meaning I may get a small commission, but you pay no additional costs. It’s a great (and easy) way to help support this channel:
Peel N’ Stick Ruler Tape: amzn.to/36HZxOV
20mm x 33m, 108 feet (larger) heat tape: amzn.to/33CHvvZ
13mm x 33m, 108 feet heat tape: amzn.to/3eh4LBU
10mm x 33m, 108 feet (narrower) heat tape: amzn.to/3edULJC
Desktop tape dispenser: amzn.to/3qfs2tG
24” metal ruler: amzn.to/3G9371v
Folding utility knife: amzn.to/3fjkUr8
Olaf 12” x 18” self-healing cutting mat: amzn.to/3JbZ0n4
Oven thermometer ($5.99): amzn.to/3BkTuv7
Cosmos Ink: shareasale.com/r.cfm?b=136325...
Heat Press Nation Signature Series Mug Press w/Tumbler attachment: shareasale.com/r.cfm?b=113707...
Hamilton Beach Convection Oven: amzn.to/3mhfSid
And please check out our Facebook group, groups/55947.... If you enjoy sublimation, just answer a couple of quick questions and join. You do need to answer the questions, and you must agree to the group rules, but I promise, they’re not difficult! We’d love to have you!
I hope you enjoy, and if this video helped you, please give it a thumbs up! And also, be sure to subscribe for more upcoming fun and informative videos!

I use a convection oven for my glass cans. When I have some that I need to strip the sun ink off. I put a shrink wrap on it and bake for about 6-7 minutes. The shrink wrap soaks up the image pretty well. I normally do 2 rounds of that. It works wonderfully. I have t tried it on the tumblers though.

@@industrialfringe953 Good morning, I’m doing another as I post this comment. I only taped the seams and double taped the top and bottom. I was thinking that perhaps it got over heated by me turning it four times on one end, and four times on the other end. Was that too much heat for it? This time, I’m turning it twice in each end, making sure the the section that the press doesn’t heat the first time, gets heat when I turn it. I sure hope this works. It’s cooling down now before I remove the butcher paper and sublimation paper. I’ll be watching more of your wonderful videos. Thank you.

I love this. Thank you so much for sharing. I noticed some the tumblers are kind of dark on the bottom, are they burnt? You also mentioned something about one of them leaving a tape mark and you'd get that out, tape marks can be removed from sublimated cups and tumblers?

You can burn the bottom if you’re not careful. My tumbler bottoms were okay, but I had adhesive residue that I forgot to remove before I started! It was hard to get off. And I had the coffee mug bottom get dark. If the marks are vague, sometimes you can remove them with Turtle Wax Scratch & Swirl. I’ll be trying this in an upcoming video!

Hey, Mags! The coffee mug I rebaked had a brownish bottom, but surprisingly, the others didn’t. I have a silicone mat that’s on the bottom of the oven that may have something to do with it. I would also imaging if they’re over baked, that could occur. If you don’t already have one, try a silicone mat inside the oven. Make sure it will withstand the heat! Thanks for watching!

Would there be a way to remove the remainder ink like rubbing alcohol or acetone or would that remove the special coating? Could you in theory turn any mug into a sublimation mug by dipping it in polycrylic? Just some beginner questions i kind of have.
@industrialfringe953
@industrialfringe953 Жыл бұрын
Hey! Great questions! I don’t know for sure, but I would bet removing the remaining ink with a harsh chemical would also remove the sublimation coating. And theoretically, you could coat anything with the right polycrylic coating. I tend to shy away from that, as I sell my product, and I want to make sure it’s 100% sublimatable. I also can’t beat the prices for already finished tumblers. I may use a special coating on an upcoming video, but it will be for canvas fabric. Thanks for watching!

Hi! I have the French Door convection/air fryer combo and I usually lay my tumblers down to sublimate, there are a few that are messed up does it matter if I lay them down to erase the ink or is it better to stand them up?

Have noticed the dark at the bottom of the tumblers I don't know if it's burnt does that come off and does any of the fumes get down in the cup I saw somebody cover up the top of their cup so the fumes wouldn't get inside
@industrialfringe953
@industrialfringe953 8 ай бұрын
Well, I’ll need to start by saying you should never take scientific advice from me. (Mrs. Koenig, my high school science teacher would very quickly confirm this.) I don’t cover the tops when I bake off, as I don’t personally believe there’s an issue. First, deposition (or desublimation) is the process of turning a gas back into a solid, so there is a possibility of the gas reforming into a solid inside the tumbler. I’m not sure that’s a bad thing, as once the gas has turned into a solid, it’s safe. Right?! I mean, I could lick the outside of my tumbler all day long and nothing would happen to me. (Let’s assume I’ve never done that.) I do wash out my tumblers after they’ve been burned off, but my very unscientific thought is that it’s okay. Besides, if you’re sublimating in an oven, there is still a percentage of gas going into the oven and thus into and around the tumbler. That said, if you have ANY issue, by all means, cover it! (With what, I don’t know!) As far as the dark at the bottom, it’s probably not coming off! Thanks for watching!

Thanks! No, I would not order them from a restaurant wholesaler, as they won’t be coated for sublimation. Check out the link for the Alibaba supplier I use. They should have them in their US warehouse, shipping is included, and you’ll get them in 3 - 5 days. And the prices can’t be beat. They’re $175 for 50, coming out to $3.50 each. If you don’t want that many, check out rtssublimationblanks.com. They’re $6.75 each plus shipping. Thanks for watching!

I am a beginner at sublimation. I have sublimated four tumblers so far using a tumbler press at 360 for 60 minutes. They all have a faded color look, the black is brown, turquoise is green, and so forth. I’m wandering if you can suggest what I may doing wrong. My tumbler press is brand new, not sure if that should have anything to do with it. Also I have a regular size oven that is a convection oven as well, could I rebake the mess ups in it? Or would that make my oven not safe for cooking food in ?
@industrialfringe953

Welcome to the wonderful world of sublimation! I’m guessing you mean 60 seconds for your time! Here’s my time and temp (and I use light pressure). Take a look and see if that helps. And do NOT use an oven for sublimation that you use to eat! Sublimation releases gases, and you don’t want any residual gas in your pot pie! kzbin.info/www/bejne/r4DUqXt7j8yDrc0

So my tumbler is to tall to stand up in convection oven so can I lay in there to try and do this? Would I just need to turn it several times? When I sub on them I have to lay in oven which comes out great so wasn’t sure when trying to burn image off if this would work.

I haven’t needed to do that yet, but I would just about bet that if you’re making them in the oven that way, you should be fine with baking the image off that way. But yes, I would turn it often. (I would probably turn every 10-15 minutes, but I may be a little OCD about it!) Thanks for watching!

@industrialfringe953 Жыл бұрын
Hey, Hippie Chick Creations! (I absolutely love that name!) You can, but you can’t use it to cook food in. The best is a small countertop convection oven. If you’re looking, try a thrift store. And while convection is better, a regular toaster will probably work, you’ll just need to manually turn it once or twice during the bake. Again, don’t ever use an oven you’d cook your food in! The process of sublimation releases gases that you do not want in your food! Thanks for watching!

For images with a lot of black in them, how do you keep the sub paper from sticking to the tumbler? Mine is sticking badly which ruins the finish of the tumbler. The other colors press beautifully. I run an Epson F570, Epson General Purpose transfer paper with Epson sub ink.
@industrialfringe953
@industrialfringe953 Жыл бұрын
Without knowing any more, my first two thoughts would be this. First, make sure your ink is bone-dry on the paper. I try to print a day or so before pressing. (I’ve pressed seconds after printing too, but I try to wait at least a little while, especially on dark designs with large solid dark areas.) Secondly, you may want to try prebaking the tumbler if you’re gonna do a really dark image and you’re still having an issue. Just long enough to make sure the finish is baked into the tumbler. (Two to five minutes in an oven or 30 seconds to a minute in a press.) Let it cool back down before wrapping. Thanks for watching!

What about the gasses getting inside the tumbler when baking off?
@industrialfringe953
@industrialfringe953 9 ай бұрын
While I’m not a chemist, my belief is, the stainless steel inside is a hard metal surface and can easily be cleaned. What you want to stay away from is food in the same oven. The reason behind that is that food can absorb any lingering gases left in the oven, but a hard stainless steel surface cannot. But that’s just my best guess. If you’re concerned, don’t rebake, or at least get an opinion from someone qualified to answer chemical/gas related questions! Thanks for watching!

Well, the Walmart frosted one was messed up all around, so it was trash! With the exception of two, I didn’t have issues with the bottoms. I have always heard that when you set a convection oven at, say, 400 degrees that it really is only warming up to 375 degrees. How do you get rid of the tape marks?
@industrialfringe953
@industrialfringe953 10 ай бұрын
The goal is to not get them in the first place, and I do that by using very light pressure and making sure the tumblers are completely cured. (There’s no way to test that, but if you have light pressure and you’re getting them, you need to bake the other tumblers in that box for 30 seconds to a minute without anything on them to make sure they’re completely cured. Let them cool back down, then wrap as normal. If you do get them, you can use a car wax to lightly buff and reduce the severity. Turtle Wax Scratch and Swirl is the one I’ve used. It’s not a complete remover, but it helps!

Did it burn on the bottom of the tumblers? What is that on the last ones bottom?
@industrialfringe953

I had to go back and look at the video, because I knew none of them burnt on the bottom (except the glass one and the mug a little bit)! I had previously put a rubber bottom on that tumbler, and when I removed the rubber bottom, some of the adhesive didn’t come off, but I didn’t notice. That adhesive browned up. I was able to remove it with a little GooGone. The learning on my part? Remove all the adhesive BEFORE I rebake a tumbler! Thanks for watching!
