Yes, that's a good system. The number refers to the octave the note is based in, so it's a really accurate way of writing it.

I know how to read tabs at an intermediate level. However, I am having trouble playing the guitar without looking at the fretboard. Tell me, how does one play the guitar while reading the tabs and not looking at the fretboard? How is this done?
