I'm sightreading Bach Chorales, starting with two voices. But to realze them I'm having a problem to keep the rhythm. I love the way you realize these and try to emulate what you do. It isn't easy, n'est-ce pas?

Very useful breakdown, including discussion of melodic movement and suspensions. This would seem to be a useful shorthand, maybe a way of speeding up the composing process?

Nice! This level of figured bass was relatively familiar to me, but I'm not much beyond this. So it was a good refresher, and you explained some of the teaching points well. I'll keep at it and move on to the next step!

Maestro: I want to make sure I understand your excellent explanation: time set 11:55 you have 6 - 5 Melodic: you have on the top third staff A Note; question, is the #F (the 6 sixth) and the E is the fifth above the Bass. Please inform, respectfully, R
@MusicMattersGB
@MusicMattersGB 2 жыл бұрын
Yes. One part has to move from F# to E above the bass A in order to create the melodic 6-5.

Really good explanation, thanks! One question: when writing out FB for an exam, would you suggest an SATB arrangement or keyboard spacing?
@MusicMattersGB

Better to use keyboard spacing because the continuo realisation would be at the keyboard. Thanks for your positive feedback

Did you make a video on chords that are wide? For instance you have a root position chord and you put the third up an octave. Is that chord still in root position?
@MusicMattersGB
@MusicMattersGB 2 жыл бұрын
The position is determined by the lowest sounding note. The other notes can be placed in any octave you like above the bass note.

Glad you've done this. I so don't care about figured bass. I never see it used in scores. I don't see any value in a cryptic ancient shorthand. But it's good to know in case you should ever come across it, but I really don't see why you'd bother using it. Music is hard enough as it is with it's peculiar symbols without this. Death to figured bass!

If you play Baroque music, especially as a keyboard player, you can’t avoid it.
@chrismunroe8015

@@MusicMattersGB then death to ancient Baroque scores! Show me a modern score that NEEDS to use that notation? Just write the notes on for goodness sake! Sibelius makes it so easy, there's no point in resorting to a peculiar excuse of short-hand to pretend your clever. No point in learning an ancient non-sensical system that is dead and is entirely unnecessary. What's wrong with C/E (first inversion C chord) that anybody can understand? That is so intuitive, a beginner can understand? If exams are still doing this nonsense, death to that too.🤣. Why we're still being forced to learn musical terms in every language is beyond me. Standardise, like IT. One way, not a trillion ways to say the same thing!

You would simply write 7 because the required sharps are already in the key signature and 7 is the abbreviation for 753.
