How to Recruit Level 10 & 12 Companions Early Game WARTALES

This is my WARTALES guide for recruiting high level companions early game. Fair warning, this knowledge can essentially break the early game. While a fun and exciting exploit, using it may ruin the experience of slowly building and leveling up your characters. Use with caution.

Drombach was the final area for me in my playthrough and finding these two was a big boon to my company as I had very few that were even level 9 (getting the training dummy is ESSENTIAL as early as possible). They soon became my top tank and top assassin as I was able to outfit them with the top armor/weapons at the forge.

This is a great find! I honestly wasn't keen on ever playing the xp grind again on a second playthrough, but with this i can do a "new game plus" kinda situation where I start at max level and just have to worry about professions.

It is really sweet eh! Especially for returning players like yourself. The thought of grinding out the xp after completing the game has gotta be daunting. This game really makes you work for it. I had the two lvl 11 from prison + my 4 lvl 3 with a lvl 3 horse, when i tried to recruit i could only get lvl 2 mercenaries so i got out of the town and expeled one of my lvl 3 unit then came back in tavern and they all were lvl 9 :D Hope it will help to ppls asking about recruiting lvl, and thank you Otto for this!

I want to add, that you need one Day to let them spawn. So just wait for the next day until the old ones are leaving for the new lvl 9 ones ;)

That is interesting, they were both lvl 11 when I did my testing, I wonder if that is due to lvling up your starting party more or the difficult selection since I did the testing on novice combat/survival to save time and ran straight for the jail with lvl 1~2 characters.

Honestly, I wasn't entirely sure if they were 11 or 12. I thought the level might have been bumped up because of the extra aptitude point from fast training. Though I did test this out on the Expert difficulties. So you may be right, that's possibly why the lvl was higher. Otherwise I have no idea, it does seem a little odd that they were only level 11 in your testing. In any case, many thanks for discovering and sharing this. I think a lot of people will have some fun with this.

It’s cool that this is possible but I personally won’t be using this cheese. Takes the enjoyment of natural progression away for me.

@Tyler Thomas I totally agree. Most people play a game like this for the natural progression. Something like this could ruin all the fun. I'll probably only use it in one of my playthroughs and maybe as something to test out builds for the different classes. Thanks for the comment.

As an adaptive player I find this highly amusing as an exploit but yeah it looks like it'd sap enjoyment from region lock.

@Zoey F I definitely have mixed feelings about it. It's cool that it's in there but I can see it ruining the game for some folks. It is kind of nice for players who've already played through the game and want a nice breezy re-play.

Yeah I made a separate save where I’m simply a menace to society so I’ll be using this to enjoy that but I’ll have my other normal save for playing it normal. I love natural progression but yeeting some progress isn’t always bad haha

These make the game fun for me. Brings me back to the good ole days where they have cheat codes and secrets to make you powerful and godlike. Especially skyrim when it first came out i did the leveling up glitch before i started the actual games. You’re not unstoppable but you even out the playing field and its better then playing the game on easy mode. You actually got to go out and do something to achieve that so it doesn’t feel like cheating to me

Dont forget about inquisitor at ludern jail. She is a lvl 8/9 brute and has quite decent weapon

in my case, i was able to capture level 11 bears (also on region lock campaign) was in vertruse completed the region quest got a pass, so i explored he snowy region. Upon entering the borders i noticed the guards where fighting the lvl 11 bears, so i jumped in and got two bears. my troops where mostly level 7 at that time. i didnt venture further though and went back to vertruse

@rbm 50874 Shoot man, that's a lucky pickup for you. On one of my playthroughs when I ran into the level 11 snow bears with my level 7 party I went running the other way. Nice you had the guards there to help you capture them. Those bears must be the ultimate tanks. I wonder, did having the bears also increase the level of new recruits for you?

You can also get a level 13 bear by fighting a guard with Suspicion level 4 and above in ludern

@rbm 50874 Shoot, that's too bad. Though, it could possibly be because of your party size and average companion level. On my original playthrough I had only 4 companions all at level 2 and was able to recruit level 10 companions. But on stream I had 7 companions I believe, all around level 3, and I was only able to recruit level 2 companions. So I dunno, it seems a bit janky. I will do a bit of testing myself to see what the effects of party size and level has on new recruits. I will also be on the lookout for high level animals and see if I can do a bit of testing there too.

Don't know if someone already info this, IF you start region locked and start Vertruse region those are level 5. I've tested 3 times and every time same result, i think reason for this is Drombach is next region after you done Vertruse, Tiltren is level 8+. Don't know if start Artheas region what then. On my save Hakert + Torus from Tiltren was level 8 and Celenessa from Artheas level 11.

I forget their names to be honest. I always change them after I recruit them. They're both pretty awesome though. Especially with legendary gear like splitter.

Huh, interesting find. I probably won't bother with these 2 but high-tier allies are fun to have. Playing on region-locked, I ventured early into Ludern, kited a group of bandits into a group of 3 bears, helped the bandits and managed to capture one level 8 bear (while my party was still levels 4-5). Since that day, his fluffy 800+ HP ass has been tanking all my enemies. xD With his help (and also good encounter map with 1 narrow bridge) I even managed to beat the group of bandits I helped earlier (my 7 or 8 people vs about 12-13 enemies all of whom were much stronger than my guys). It took several tries and gave me very little loot & xp but a lot of satisfaction. xD

I couldn't get this to work. Has it been patched? I am on the locked mode, ran around...got about 1200g and a bunch of food....wandered to the prison, recruited Heleth and Gunbald, but everything in my game is still lvl2.

Heleth and Gunbald are still level 11 or 12? If they are, recruiting additional companions at high level should still work. However, it can be a bit finicky. My understanding is that the level of new recruits will be based on the average level of your party members. So, if you have a large party with lower level companions it will bring the average down. Also, it seems that the game locks the level of new recruits in a region at the level your party was the first time you encounter them. If you spoke to the mercenaries in a tavern before recruiting Heleth and Gunbald and then returned to recruit them after adding Heleth and Gunbald to your party then those mercenaries will still be at a lower level. If you travel to a nearby region where you haven't already spoken to any of the mercenaries in the tavern then you should be able to recruit them at the higher level. I hope this was helpful. I had the same issue on one of my playthroughs. I will try and set some time aside to double check that nothing has been changed in any of the recent patches.

I can hire a bandit with 12 lvl after that disband all my other guys and a pony, after that my team will be only one bandit with avg lvl 12 and I can hire in tavern 12 lvl?

@Anastasia I haven't tested that exactly myself yet, but that is the hypothesis. With four lvl 2 characters and the two lvl 12 characters I was able to recruit lvl 10. But in my stream the other night I had seven lvl 1-3 characters and the two lvl 12 characters and I was only able to recruit lvl 2 characters from the tavern. I mean to do some tests in order to see how it functions precisely. I'll keep you posted if I make any discoveries.

@Anastasia Okay, so I just ran a little test. It seems that even if you go down to just the two lvl 12 characters and no pony, the highest you can recruit new pony's and new characters is lvl 10. I should note as well, that if you enter a town with the lower lvl characters still in your party and release them there, the recruits at the tavern will still be at a lower lvl. You will need to visit the next town in order to unlock the recruitment of the higher lvl characters. I hope this is helpful. Best of luck on your Wartales adventures.

@Arra Game Show Wow, that's crazy. I had no idea the mole-rat's were available as companions. I'd be interested to see what their unique skills and benefits are. I've mostly been going with wolves and bears for one of my playthroughs. The boars are also available as companions. Thank you for the comment.

Ok, two questions just to clarify - 1. Does it matter "when" you decide to do this.... as in what if my party is level 4? 2. So you basically have to kick out your whole party except for like 1 guy, or else the game won't let you recruit more 10-12, yes? or is it just that the game lowers their level based on how many you keep?

@Fzoul Cmbyl To your first question, no, it shouldn't matter what level your party members are at. The two characters at Drombach jail will be level 12 so long as you're playing on region locked mode and not adaptive. As for the recruiting of new companions, I'm not sure exactly how it works. The level you can recruit new companions will be based on the average level of your troop. This will be true for ponies as well. So you shouldn't need to go down to only 1 companion in order to recruit new high level companions. Also, the highest level I've been able to recruit at is level 10, even after going down to just the two level 12 companions. In the playthrough featured in this video I didn't have to kick anyone out of the party in order to recruit level 10 companions. However, on stream when I did this a little later in the campaign and with a larger party the new recruits were all lower level. Only after I kicked out a few party members was I able to recruit at a higher level. I should note also, that I did have to travel to the next town over in order find the higher level recruits. I believe the game locks the level of mercenaries in taverns at the level when you first encounter them. But again, I'm not entirely sure how all of this works. What I've posted here is to the best of my knowledge.

Awesome thank you, I didn't realize I needed to go to the next town's tavern so I will do that. 👍 After my comment, I went ahead and made the trek up there and damn the bandits are quick, I had the "run" perk plus a pony with the horseshoe trinket and still had no chance to outrun them, but I did negotiate and didn't have to fight. I got the 2 characters at the jail and made it back home safely ( wish I could recruit the Warden... sheesh that guy ) 😄

@Bao Bui Hmm. That's curious. Are you playing on region locked or adaptive mode? The exploit will only work on region locked. If you're playing on adaptive then the two prisoners will be near the same level as the rest of your party. Whereas on region locked mode they should always be at level 11 or 12. Aside from that the only thing I can think that might effect their level may be the difficulty setting. But I'm not sure, I haven't tested it on the lower difficulties. But I will keep an eye out for any patch notes indicating that it's been changed or if anyone else has run into the same issue.

not true you can finsd some good ones you need to also unlok some paths to get more skils on them and if you have a tavern its good to man it whit normal toons recruit the extras from hero fights i got a good assasin from that full skill tree and just some guys frome fighs from other missions not simpel bandits i even have a tame plauge rat and ther upkeep is realy ceap too as thy get the free slave traid ps. i cant replay to comments YT is acting wierd

Certainly under normal circumstances the prisoners are quite useless. These are hardly normal prisoners though.
