Removing hiss from Video Microphone (white noise) on most shotgun mics

In today’s video I teach you how to get rid of that annoying hiss or white noise from your videos when using ANY mic. I show you step by step on how to achieve crisp and clear audio when filming any type of video!
Some have asked for wind filter/attenuator settings:

For wind filter:
Set to [Auto] for automatic reduction of audio distortion in windy outdoor scenes. Only activated when the camera’s built-in microphone is used. When the wind filter function takes effect, part of the low bass sounds will also be reduced. (Only available if you are not using an external mic)
Attenuator:
This feature suppresses sound distortion caused by loud noises. (Set to Enable when you're in loud environments. It will prevent the audio from becoming distorted when there's a loud sound.)

I have the Canon M50 & the Rode videomic go, I followed all these steps, & I STILL have the white noise, PLUS now when I try to edit my video in iMovie, you can BARELY hear me, even when I turn up the volume of the audio & even when I reduce the background noise. Is there any way to fix this? I know other ppl have the same exact prob so I'm considering getting the Rode videomic NTG but its just so expensive.

I totally feel you. I'm not familiar with the Rode videomic go but does it have a switch or an option for +10dbs on the mic itself? I would switch that on. I bought the Rode video micro as a backup mic to my Takstar SGC-598 and i have the same problem minus the white noise. I noticed what causes it is because mics that don't require a battery and don't have settings like +10db or -10db are a lot less sensitive therefore needing to raise the noise floor on the camera. That's just my theory. My Takstar mic has an option for +10db and I always use that setting and my audio sounds fine. On the other hand, when I use the Rode video micro, I always have to raise the volume in editing. I would try adjusting the audio sensitivity on the M50 to be a little higher than you currently have and listening to see how it sounds when you're editing.

freeley no... it sadly doesn’t have a +10dbs switch on the mic. I really appreciate your help! I’m not TOO butthurt about the mic bcos I got the Canon M50’s video creator kit off Canon’s website and the mic basically came free with it. So I guess I’ll just have to save up more money to get the NTG lol

No problem! Yeah, you can start with whatever you have :) If you're more on a budget I'd recommend the Takstar sgc-598. I use it for most of my videos and it's 1/8th the price of the NTG. My only issue with it is that it's kind of big for vlogging hence why I got the rode video micro lol. Idk how the audio quality of this one compares to the NTG but at least for me it's really good.

I have recorded some dialogues in a short film on set with my Boya PVM 1000 which has a lot of traffic ambience sound in the background. However, the dialogues are pretty clear and clean. I want to completely remove all the traffic noise and want to replace it with an ambience track that I have recorded separately on set. What I'm honestly kind of surprised by is how noisy the mic preamp is on my R5 C (that thing cost around 6 grand with the 24-105 L lens kit.. yes, 6 grand and the mic input is more noisy than my $100 camcorder from them). Now, this advice is best practice for productions where you have control over the environment (they teach this in year 1 broadcast television production), but if you pack your camera when interacting with the world, this advice will not help you (unless you live somewhere where the noises of unscripted events happen at a very fixed level-I dunno if trains in Iowa are just loud but yeahh). Also, don't adjust too much in post. 16-bit (like what cameras record) has more than enough latitude, but as above, the mic preamp in a disappointingly large number of mirrorless cameras is noisier than $100 camcorders of past years (your noise floor is more like a noise ceiling with these things).

Nope! You might turn the wind filter on if you were in a windy area but I typically don't use it

I tried this, but my camera isn't detecting any sound at all. When you were talking the bars in the sound setting was acknowledging the sound and moving left to right. Mine doesn't have any bars. And when I watch the clips back on my computer all I hear is static. I have the Deity V-Mic D3 and I'm trying to connect it to my Cannon EOS M50. Please help! 😬 This is my first camera ever. when i go to the movie setting and then sound recording it says, "not available b/c of the associated fucntion's setting. *Move rec quality" so i can't adjust anything in this mode : ( EDIT/FIX: ok it's b/c i had 4k/120fps enabled for movie recording which doesn't do sound.

Unfortunately, my camera literally only has two mic rec levels: "normal" and "low cut" and both still have the hiss, but the "low cut" reduces it a little, but it's still noticeable. Oh well; at least everything is fixable in post.

Hey there, so doing some digging myself I found that you have to set the camera mode to either Tv, Av, P, or Manual and go into the settings again it will give you the option to adjust the audio. I like your name btw! Death Note was an awesome show :)

I've found another solution. Just lowering the sound level made the audio way too quiet but with a hiss. I have Canon 750D plus a cheaper Rode shotgun. Someone told me that's because the camera records stereo. So I bought a lav mic for an interview with two mics to record two channels. It works, no hiss. But I'd still prefer a shotgun...

But what causes this hiss (white noise) to begin with? It seems to me if you turn down the sound it will also turn down the sound over all it will make your voice lower and when you up the vol in post it will then up the vol for the hiss. I film out and about, in hotels, air bnb flats in cars and the sound is not too bad, but as soon as I started filming in my space where I live I get this loud hiss EXACTLY the sound you sampled in your video. It seems the more quite the surroundings or lack of space ie no ECHO from a larger space (the opposite actually) due to a small confined space the hiss is super loud. But exactly is this hiss? Is it the mic itself?

From what i've read, the hiss comes from the 'noise floor' or mic sensitivity being too high and that is from the camera itself. For example, when you have your camera on the auto audio setting the camera adjusts it's sensitivity to sound on its own. Say you're walking outside and a loud car drives by, the camera will adjust the sensitivity when it detects the loud sound to be 'less sensitive'. Since you're outside where there's a lot of noise the camera detects that so it adjusts the sensitivity accordingly. Contrast that to situations when you're in your room or an enclosed space and it's relatively quiet. The camera is thinking 'Oh I can't detect any noise so let me bring the sensitivity of the audio higher' and that's where the hiss happens. It's the camera looking for something to detect so it raises it's audio sensitivity or what some ppl call the noise floor. With that said, that's why when connecting an external mic to your camera you set it to manual audio sensitivity so that camera doesn't auto adjust whenever it wants. The external mic acts as a better audio source compared to the one built into the camera. As to where to put the sensitivity, that's different from camera to camera and mic to mic. Sorry this was really long but I hoped this answered your question!

But in my home space the ceilings are slanted and close overhead, I think this dampens the sound so this makes sense.

You turn on the wind filter for situations where it's very windy to cut down on the wind distortion. Make sure to turn it off in non-windy situations because with it On it will make the audio sound weird. The attenuator is used to prevent audio distortion in noisy areas.
