How to Register and Update your Spektrum Transmitter with the Spektrum USB Programming Cable

In this video Tom teaches our friends and fellow RC Enthusiasts how to use the SPMA3065 to register and update the firmware on a DX5C to add telemetry and Smart ESC Support. The steps you see here also applies to updating the DX5 Rugged and the DXe Air Transmitter.
IMPORTANT NOTES - : If you are updating your DX5C radio from version 1.00 to version 1.06 or above, any models in memory will be erased and you will need to re-enter them. You will also need to rebind your models. If you have a complex model we suggest writing down the settings so that they can be easily installed in the event that it is affected with this update.

I have the rugged dx5 with the sr515 receiver. I updated the transmitter and i still can't get telemetry or avc functions. My traxxas system was more simple than this. Get the bt module for the transmitter ad the rpm wire an temp wire and i have speed an temp right to my phone.

How do I find the serial number for my new SPM9747 satellite receiver? I can't register it. I have it connected to the main receiver, and the main receiver shows up on the programmer, but the satellite doesn't show, and there is no plug to allow the programmer to connect to the satellite!

I think it is pretty ridiculous to require a USB programming cable which is not included with the DX5C to get the serial number of the unit so it can be registered. Couldn't you just put a paper label on the transmitter like every other electronic device??

Not sure about the dx5c but on the Rugged you can go into the menu then scroll down to "Settings", go into that then scroll down to "About", go into that and it will display the serial number and software version.

Looks like it says it will delete your models?? But then I did the update and my models were still there. The update screen had a disclaimer: "NOTE: If you are updating your radio from an earlier version to version 1.08 or higher, any models in memory will be erased and you will need to re-enter them. You will also need to rebind your models."

HI, by mistake I restored factory settings in my DXS that came with the Carbon Cub 1.3 and then I had to bind again. I could but now in intermediate or expert mode the motor runs like hell regardless of throttle stick position (I can only stop it using H switch). In beginner mode it works but it only accelerates to less than 50%. Should I update my DXS in order to select toe correct mode? Which version should I install? Thanks!

I’m having issues with my DX5 rugged and any receiver for that matter. Tried with an SR515, and the SR6100 AT. I’ve tried adjusting all my rates so they’re at 100%, and I have no reverse. I’m using a fairly new axial ae-5 ESC which worked fine previously with the tactic rx. Tried to do the reset/calibration with that and no luck. I have steering, and forward but no reverse. Also lose my aux channels because I have to turn AVC on otherwise when the rx even moves the slightest my servo goes wild. Could these issues be firmware related? Or what should I do? What needs to be done to resolve these issues? I want to be able to set this up properly like I thought I was going to be able to do.

Just bought the DXC5 W/ SR6100AT. I cant register the receiver without buying this additional cable?! what a rip off. seriously. I have to register my product to validate a warranty, and your forcing me to buy an accessory to do just that.....register something I already paid for and am due a warranty under protection of the law. You should be including these cables in anything that needs them in order to be registered...... like my SR6100AT Receiver. Transmitter had the S/N in the User Interface, but not the receiver. Shame on you Spectrum!

Yes, I just received a dx5 rugged and was having similar problems. After a couple phone calls I got in touch with an actual service person and was explained that the new update will fix these problems plus others. Waiting on my cable to arrive so I can update my radio

Just got a DXe with my Blade 330s durring bench tests I have found both flight modes and safe modes are same switch. If I get the cables and programmer can I move safe to the empty 3 position switch like the DX NX and IX transmitters suggest. Trying to relearn to fly before spending big bucks on a radio

If it is a DXe (not DXs) then you should be able to seperate the throttle curve switch and the flight mode switch. That said, there are gains and other settings tied to the flight mode switch that need to change when going to different throttle curves, so it may not fly quite right seperating the 2.

You have to buy the cable, download the program onto your computer. Plug in your equipment and then the serial number shows up. It's ABSOLUTELY RIDICULOUS that's how we have to do it now! Buy a couple hundred dollar remote then have to spend another 30.00 for a cable to register your remote. I've been trying for TWO WEEKS now to register my dx5 rugged and still can't! Horizon customer service FUCKING SUCKS

For speed you need to set the Roll out and Pole Count in the ESC telemetry menu.

Just bought the DX5C for my 2 crawlers only. I tried to get the serial number from the DX5C, but that cable is required just to get the serial number, and register it for the warranty. That was kinda lame. I don’t think I need to do any updates on this, since I’m not interested in running any smart telemetry features, or nor am I using any Spektrum esc, or motors for crawling. I like my hobbywing fusion motor/esc combos for that. This should be fine right out of the box for what I need. Can anyone confirm this??? I will only be using this with the sr315 receivers.

Hi Mario, unless you purchased old stock or it used, then there should not be any need to update it. If it is new then likely it has one of the latest updates on it already and is ready for Smart when you are :) So you should be good to go

@@SpektrumRCvideos Thank you very much for responding, and quickly. I thought this DX5C would be fine for crawling, since everyone in my group (Knights Ferry RC Crawlers) uses one. There was any issue with my Reef’s Raw 500 servo, twitching while using it, that was irritating me. Reefs said it has to be the RTR Tactic TTX300 controller, and or the matching RTR receiver. They recommended using one of the better (non RTR) Spektrums, so I finally bought one, after the price has gone up 50%…lol. I’m not sure if you can confirm why it would twitch intermittently, or why the Spektrum would resolve that issue. I am using the the hobbywing fusion 1800kv motor/esc with the BEC @7.4volts. Maybe DSMR is just better???? Hopefully the Spektrum will resolve that, and if it doesn’t, then it must be the servo. Last time I was out crawling, some had the same spektrum radio, same servo, same truck, same motor/esc, and he has never seen his do that. Any info/thoughts on that would be awesome, and thank you again, for the first advice

Hi, i have a dsm2 deltang receiver and wont bind with my DX5C transmiter that is currently on version 1.08, is there any chance that this is firmware related? My transmiter says DSMR 2.4GHz and in the manual says that is compatible with all dsm2 and dsmx receivers but i haven’t been able to bind them. Thanks

DSM2 will only work in 16.5ms mode. Try change the frame rate to 16.5 and rebind.

@@SpektrumRCvideos hi, thanks for replying, after contacting product support (horizonhobby) they told me about “US” and “EU” versions and that only “US” version is compatible with dsm2. Unfortunately mine is EU, after watching many videos i notice that all the transmitters shown in the videos from americans are EU as well so it seems that there are no DX5C with US version installed. I find this vert odd and deceiving since i bought my transmitter from Amazon US and all the charts on spektrum’s website specifically say that the DX5C is compatible with Dsm2 and dsmx, at least they should remark that only US version. Anyway product support told me that they cant exchange my product from EU to US. So im trying to come to an arrangement with the amazon seller. 🙁 regards

Its not working on my spektrum dxs radio. I even got the adapter with the blue and black wire and plugged the adapter with the blue wire facing up, but it still says that there is no transmitter connected and it isnt letting me do a software update. Seriously, what garbage is this. My sport cub s transmitter didn't need to be updated so why does this have to be updated.

@@aztecjoe29 If you are asking if it will bind to a SRXL2 receiver in a drone, then it will work with no issues, communication wise, without the need to update the TX or RX. That being said, depending on your FC firmware (betaflight/Flightone/etc) you may need to adjust some settings in the FC so that it will recognize the shorter travel end points of the DXE. Hope that helps!

Spektrum you guys really need to give up the shitty proprietary ways of doing your own crap. The fact you have to register, and firmware updates are secured unless you register etc. That is why i have gotten rid of my DX9's and DX8 G2's and hopefully soon this piece of crap that is the DX5 rugged. Not sure who the numbnut was that thought the tactic touch controls was a great idea. All i can say is you lost me as a customer.

I just wasted about 40 minutes screwing with this registration crap. Spectrum must have a special committee to make this process a a royal pain in the ass. Wish TF I had purchased something else.

Oh man tell me about it, trying to register a few micro receivers for days now. Error message every time. So no way to update them.

What about Mac users? This method of updating and to get the serial number is idiotic and archaic. Are you all living in the 1990’s? Sheesh!? Even Traxxas updates are via Bluetooth for their $100 transmitters. 🤦‍♂️

Ron I don't believe FAA requires or allows transmitters to be registered with them. From my knowledge, they require you to register the aircraft, not the transmitter. So you don't have to worry about that.
