Yes on fiberglass and pressed steel you can scrub to hard and they also fill out when abrasive cleaners like comet or Ajax are used! It’s like scrubbing a fine grit sand paper on the surface. Yes material is purchased in bulk but most materials purchased last through multiple jobs. This job was $800 and materials were about $100. Especially since some were purchased from prior jobs.

I've reglazed a fiberglass tub with enclosure. I cleaned, sanded with 150 grit, tact cloth, primered, and then applied rust oleum 2 part. I've noticed I've developed a rough surface. Could this be caused by not letting part A and B set up before applying, or was my prep not thorough? Thank you for your time and professional opinion.

Could be a few things..might need to be thinned out. Could be spraying too far from surface. Possibility the surface was not cleaned thoroughly and wiped with a tack cloth before spraying

Hi, great video. Lots of good information! I am about to do this on two tub surrounds in my house here in NH. I have 2 sprayers, One is an airless Graco 360DSP which has a 4" fan tip or a 12" fan tip and two speeds. I normally use it with the big tip on high speed for wall paint. My other sprayer is an HVLP Devilbiss FLG4 with a bunch of tips. It has 1.4, 1.5, 1.8, and 2.2 tips. I normally spray cabinets, doors, and trim with the 1.8 but that requires thinning most material. I use a Ford #4 cup which measures the viscosity-thickness of the paint so I can get it to the thickness that sprays well. I will shoot the 1,2,3 primer with the airless. Graco says it sprays anything without thinning, which is great because I 1,2,3, trhinned with some water on my cabinets and it took forever to harden up. In checking I saw some other folks asked about polishing and repairing Krylon. I see that once it is cured can it be fine sanded, compounded and polished? Does it normally cure to a shine?

Hey all. I just went to Titan's website and looked up the Maxum II projector sets. The #3 set that is shown is these videos has a .051" tip, which is 1.3 mm size. Auto guns like I have will use a 1.3 or 1.4 for basecoat and smaller for clear. They use a 1.8 for heavier material like primer. I have used a 1.8 for latex which I have to thin down. I'm surprised the Zinsser 1,2,3 will even flow at high volume low pressure (HVLP), it's thick. I have used 1,2,3 thinned this spring, but it took forever to dry in my humid cold basement. Once dry though it sealed and was a nice base for my paint. Hope I am not being a jerk by adding to your comment feed! Thanks
@DPTubs3 жыл бұрын
I use the 20 oz spray can Zinsser 1-2-3 with the wide nozzle. Sprays amazing. Available at Home Depot. If you ever have a problem with primer drying make sure to use your fune extractor to suck the moisture out of the room. Helps with dry time tremendously. I use a #3 tip for my top coat.
@3Repete3 жыл бұрын
@@DPTubs I sprayed it with my gun. 2 coats. No problem. Waited a bit, knocked it down with 400 sandpaper. Mixed up the Krylon Tub & Tile and put on 3 coats. I used a 1.5 tip because the Krylon was thinner than the latex I have been shooting on my cabinet fronts and trim. They have been thinned and shot with a 1.8. Also I wanted to remark that I was concerned about the bits and pieces that I found in the Part B can of the Krylon. It was really a lot of bits. So much so, that it would clog my filters. In hindsight I wish I had brought out my cooking strainer, that would have grabbed the bits and allowed me to filter the 2 part epoxy a bit quicker. The epoxy covered well, it's very shiny. I got a bit of pebble grain in the finish. So if it does not level I will probably polish it up to get it smother.

@ramblinjamman3 жыл бұрын
Danny, thanks for taking the time to share this with all of us here on the web. I had one question though, is it normal to use the "Bulls eye" general paint primer before applying an epoxy coating? I'm not a chemist, but for some reason was under the impression an "epoxy specific" primer had to be used. Obviously that's not the case though since you've had great success with it.
@DPTubs3 жыл бұрын
Hi Jonah..Thanks for the comment. That’s a great question. The best way to answer that is for me to make it clear on how or why I use the primer. I use the primer simply as a sealer not for adhesion. Even though the surfaces are thoroughly cleaned washed there are times were certain things cannot be seen to the naked eye. The primer sealer when sprayed makes the surface very uniform in color as well. So when sprayed and dried I am able to see if there was anything during cleaning that was potentially missed or silicone reaction things of that sort. When sprayed on tile it also helps seal the grout. There is no negative reaction with the bull’s-eye primer and the reglazing materials that I use. Now if you want a primer that is made for adhesion purposes then I would recommend using a primer that is from the same manufacture as a Reglazing Material. However a bonding agent or adhesion promoter can do that job as well. For example if I apply a clear liquid bonding agent let that dry then spray the primer sealer then spray the finish topcoat I will be fine. Also noted: the more thinner one uses with their top coat the more negative reaction one will have with primers, bonding agents, etc. I rarely thin out my material unless absolutely necessary. Thinners or reducers are more of the problem than anything, IMO
@julioctorres64503 жыл бұрын

How long does this last on a shower til it has to be redone? I want to do this in my upstairs bathroom. I have a Fuji 5 will a 1.8 mm fitting be ok? The shower is in good shape but I want to change to white and spruce it up.

What kind of finish do you use in your gun? Is it easily acquired? Or do you have to have a supplier? I'm up in Canada so dont know where I would be able to get it. Any ideas where I could get it? Thx

I use Krylon Tub and Tile. I purchase it at Sherwin Williams

Hi, love the video! I just had my tub reglazed recently with this same spraying method, but after the tub dried I noticed lots of really tiny bubbles throughout the tub. Is this normal or a potential sign that the job was done poorly? Thanks for your insights!
@DPTubs4 жыл бұрын
Small bubbles indicate that there is a possible adhesion issue or fish eyes! Did you use a bath mat? Should be smooth at the bottom! It’s possible that the reglazed did not remove contaminants on the surface completely and there is a reaction.

It means the tub wasn’t sanded/prepped properly before spraying and the paint didn’t “stick”.
@kevinmcnemar55782 жыл бұрын
Danny why didn't you use an acid etch to prep the surface???

I do not acid wash fiberglass. NEVER ACID WASH FIBERGLASS!

Again, fantastic videos!!! Couple of questions I still have after watching. 1) I’ve noticed you using a different kind of primer (paint based?) rather than the Bulldog adhesion promoter that you recommended in other comments. Do you have a preferred primer for fiberglass tubs? 2) How much Krylon tub & tile do you end us using to finish a full bathtub the size in this video?
@DPTubs3 жыл бұрын
So the bulldog is always used before the primer. The primer I use is strictly for sealing grout or neutralizing variation in color. It also helps me see any imperfections on repairs due to the uniformity of its color. Note: I do not use the primer for adhesion purposes but more for sealing purposes. Primers for fiberglass tub adhesion I would recommend Midwest Chemicals while using their white finish as well. I really like their finish but it’s less convenient due to shipping costs and delivery times. If it was local I would be using it in a heart beat. I use about 36-42 ounces of mixed Krylon at the 1:1 ratio per unit.

@@DPTubs thank you so much for the info! Extremely helpful! Unfortunately, Midwest Chemicals doesn’t sell to the general public, so I think I will end up using the Krylon tile and tub. Is there a primer you suggest that works best with Krylon?
@DPTubs3 жыл бұрын
@@jameltaylor6116 yes you can use Zinser 1-2-3 or Zinser BIN shelac based primer. Just make sure they are totally dry before and DeAnda me before coating. Also Krylon is on Amazon for $30 kit as opposed to $75 a kit from Sherwin Williams You also need to mix well and strain into spray gun cup

@@DPTubs wow you really are doing a good job thank you for sharing your skills to us .. I’m a 15 years experience painting house and any kind for paint for house so I’m looking to start doing this painting here in Utah .. what do you used to clean your cup sprayer after you finish painting the epoxy paint or primer ?
@pj71324 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the video. A couple questions about the primer. Was it water or oil based and did you cut it down or use it straight out of the can. Thanks!
@DPTubs4 жыл бұрын
Straight out of can without reducing it with water

Hey man, without any experience, do you think this is something I could learn how to do fairly easily? I know there are levels to it- meaning that your quality and craftsmanship may not be immediately attainable for someone like me. Do you feel like this is something I can learn how to do?
@DPTubs4 жыл бұрын
100% I believe you can do it! Pay attention to the steps and then go to a salvage yard or construction sites that are throwing away old tubs or sinks and practice on them.
