I want to do this....not because I like the idea....but because I am lazy and seems easier than replacing the whole surround just for the kids to destroy it (because that seems to be children's purpose in life....wear out snd destroy the things you have worked for). Thanks for sharing with us short cutters!

one thing id like to mention with the paint is that since it is oil based you can easily thin this using mineral spirits or an actual paint thinner, start ina small pint container and add a few drops of your thinner. mix until you have almost a silk like consistency and apply. Not only will it leave a nicer finish (imo), this makes the paint much easier to roll, stretches your product further so you get more out of a can (coverage) and does a better job hiding streaks when applied with a brush.

@@sonmydful I’m not disagreeing with you, but I read on another post pertaining specifically to this product that upon thinning it out with a bit of paint thinner, they experienced dry times triple that of when the product was applied as is. Is your suggestion to thin based off personal use of THIS specific product, or similar products in general? Are you aware of why this may be, or have you experienced increased dry times upon (lightly) thinning out oil based paints?

Thank you! I stumbled across your fiberglass tub surround videos a few months ago. I told my painter about your ideas and he concurred. He normally used the kits from home depot. But today after putting on the final coat of marine paint he said this was better. He followed your suggestions. First he did the marine primer and let it dry for over 24 hours. Then applied the marine top coat. He liked the finish better. He will return in 3 days just to check and make sure the cure is good. Thank you again for your videos regarding this project!

Hi guys! My sister works on yachts in south florida and about 5 years ago she also painted it with marine paint! It's the best thing she ever did! It lasted 5 years until she recently remodeled and she got a new tub! I do believe that she did a top coat once more after that. Geniuses to post this, it really really does work!! If anyone is curious and you need a quick update and trying to save some money, do it! But follow the directions just like you guys did so you get a good end result! 😊❤

I'm very impressed with the job you did. Thank you. I watched the original video and this one, and have several questions. I have a shower stall that needs to be repainted. I believe it's fiberglass, could be plastic not sure have to check it out. Anyway my questions are; 1 will this paint work on plastic? 2. Is it slippery when wet and if so can anything like sand be added to it to put on the base?
@DIYPowerCouple

Great questions: 1. We are 💯 percent sure it works on fiberglass and 0 percent sure that it works on plastic, but we are the kind of people who would try it anyway ( but that's us) 2. It is not slippery when wet. We let it cure for several days before using the tub.

Thank you for your great video. It gave me the confidence to do my green 40yr old Kohler fiberglass shower tub. It was in perfect shape but wrong color. My wife loves the new glossly white look of the Rustoleum top coat now. There are a few things I learned. Sand with 220 at start and between all coats. We could see some scratching in finished product from the 150 grit I used initially. It took 4 coats to completely hide the green and the sanding marks. The $30 quart can ran out after the 3rd coat. Don't use the cheap $1 foam roller kit from the dollar store. The tray worked great but the foam expanded and kept falling off the roller. I then purchased a high quality foam roller and it worked great for the following 3 coats. I was able to reuse the same roller by keeping it in a baggie over night. Use a foam brush to do the detail work. The horse hair brush I used didn't work well at all. I was hoping for a better looking result when all finished. The self leveling properties of the paint didn't smooth out the over lapping from the roller. Not real noticable unless the light reflects off the surface at an angle which happens with a window or light fixture. It took me 2hrs to remove the old glass sliding shower door. Took lots of elbow greese and goof off to remove adhesive and silicone caulking. It took another 8 hrs to finish sanding and painting. It is still quite smelly in the bathroom after a week. Smells like vineger. If I had to do it over I would use appliance white spray paint (not the epoxy) for the areas above the water line in the tub. I used this on a fridge and it looked very professional. This would have been a lot cheaper, faster, less smelly and better looking. Not sure how it would hold up to every day shower use but it would be easy to respray if needed. If anybody does this let me know how it turned out. Hope this helps someone.

This primer and paint are the real deal. The primer is very strong, but the smell will subside. Always wear safety gear when working with fiberglass. The marine paint is "toxic" prior to application, but after it cures, it is fantastic. We haven't had any "toxic" problems while taking baths or using the shower. Since posting this video, many people have done it...and have had great results. Hope this helps! -DIYPC

I had a tub in rental prop had cracks in a corner and someone tried to repair it and paint it. It looked terrible and I think it probably leaked. I used some kind of fiberglass repair where you mix two products together. I then filled the cracks with it and sanded it smooth. Then I used marine paint on it. It worked great. I had to point it out to people where I “patched” it. I had estimates from $495 + to fix it. Oh I used topside paint as well.

I used marine boat paint to paint the tiles in my bathtub/ shower and it looked great for about a year. After about two years it still looked good but started to show defects like minor scratches. It is now three years and it is yellowing. There is a very noticeable difference between the high gloss white bathtub (that I didn't paint- still original high gloss white) and the marine paint painted tiles. The tiles look "white" but next to the high gloss white tub they look really yellow. Big noticeable difference between the tub and painted tiles. If you use this expect it to really yellow over time. You will need to repaint the tub every three years or so. I am glad I only did my tiles (easier to fix or add a liner etc if I am not happy) and not my bathtub that would cost thousands to pull out and replace. I am searching for ways to maybe try and clear coat it or seal it so it doesn't fade.

Did you use primer on your tiles? That makes a big difference.
@pacman3556
@pacman3556 Жыл бұрын
@@DIYPowerCouple no I didn't use primer. The marine paint I used from what I was able to look up didn't need a primer. It is a thick oil based paint that has a "primer" built into the paint. It is supposed to be ready to use to paint over anything. Also from what I was able to find on the internet a primer would not have made a difference. The paint "yellows" due to some chemical reaction with the oil base paint. The primer would have had the same oil base in it and the paint would have been over top of it so (from what I could find) it all would have gone through the same chemical process over the years and had a "yellowing" effect. I think it is more about the base (oil vs latex etc) that causes the yellowing not the primer vs no primer. But I am not a paint expert so I cannot really confirm. After about 3 (maybe 4 now?) I just put another coat of paint on my tiles and they look brand new again. All reviews I have seen seems to indicate that the paint lasts 3-5 years even when done by a professional so I guess my results are typical or within the average results. Everything is shiny again. It only took about an hour so I guess every 4 years or so I will just put a quick new layer of paint on the tiles (until I can afford to replace them lol). On a side note- never ever use latex based paint on tiles- that is meant for walls and would peel off within days

I thank God for you both… really and truly I am so encouraged…I needed to see your video… so very thankful I came across this one. Your tub looks fantastic even after over two years…I bought a tub and tile kit from Home Depot …I have sanded my tub once and getting ready to sand again… sat down to rest and started watching KZbin videos for hints and tips on how to apply my product and found terrible year later videos 😞… so I started researching painting fiberglass and the Marine Paint came up… I have watched a few videos of boats being painted… but so wondered if it would truly work on tubs… all this very intensive prep work you don’t want it chipping just one year later… then I found you both tonight and I feel God has imparted confidence to me through you both and that I am on the right track… one question… have you “refreshed” it with painting another coat to brighten it? I ask because I watched a video of a wonderful young woman who had painted her tub with the product I bought but am hoping to return and buy marine … and the chemical reaction of the new wet paint she bought which was the same product she painted her tub with caused the paint on her tub to horribly bubble and blister… poor woman ended up with a horrid mess… so I knew I was never going to be able to “touch” up …. I was wondering even though it is marine paint… can it be painted over with the same product and not produce a reaction… did you try yet? I really loved your presentation….sooooooo well presented and thought out!, THANK YOU!! 5 star rating!! Lord multiply their blessings!!

Thank you so much for your comment! 🤗We are planning to sand and touch up paint in the future, but have done so yet. It is important to prep the surface well before adding an additional topcoat paint. We'll do another video when we refresh to see if it will bubble?🤔 Your tub is going to turn out great!

Looks good going to try the same. If those were oil based paints it’s good to thin as you use. Otherwise it thickens and takes forever to dry. I made many mistakes lol

You guys are right on!! I kinda stumbled across y'all video. I work on boats/repair/paint as a side hustle for MANY years. Maybe 8 years ago I did exactly what y'all did. But I used an epoxy paint, knowing this is a super durable paint. It has 2 parts, mixing it in = amounts, Lots of time to apply before setting up. Rolls on very nicely with a GOOD foam roller. Thin coats 30 minutes then re-coat. 3 coats on vertical side, inside and out, 6 coats on the floor of tub. Lots left over with a 1/2 gallon kit ( I have tiled wall, standard tub only all it had to paint) Shower /tub MUST BE CLEANED, and CLEANED, I clean it with dawn dish soap/water and a palm sander, 120 grit Remove all sealers (silicone) 1st. This does finish very slippery, so put some bathtub sticker down so grandma don't fall and break a hip. Thanks. You two think outside the box, research, and navigate your own course. Your fiberglass tub would have had a topcoat of something, possibly an epoxy. That would be the determining factor for what would adhere to it. You reasoned your way to marine paint. I am puzzling my way to painting a cast iron tub a as have reasoned similar to you about marine paints. Ships are made of metal, so a marine paint for that would yield similar results with consideration to the original paint on the tub. Smoothness and no streaks are my concern. Adhesion, with uniform sanding and increasing smoothness of sandpaper seems the way to go. And, of course, cleaning and primer specific to the paint; that’s what helped the binding between the old and new paint. A ROS would have simplified your work (hand sanding’s tough), but you did it! Great. Thanks! I’m a convert. **I’ve seen the results of big box store “tub” paints. Not Good! **Glad you are safety minded.

Yes, you can just use the paint, but it will fade much faster without the primer. One good thing to note is that this paint will not chip. 😃
@Nappylox71

Could the fading be due to like soap residue, especially after 2 years? Its surprising how much of that builds up on your shower walls, even with cleaning the shower.

Yes, soap build up could cause fading. We are happy with the new look, but just like boats, you will have to refresh your tub. Good thing about doing it this way is that the paint will not chip. Best, -DIYPC 😃✨

@@DIYPowerCouple So I did it!!! My sister & I painted the shower & tub tonight. We used 'Rust-Oleum Tub And Tile Refinishing 2-Part Kit'. I thought I had a 'fiberglass' shower but it was actually 'acrylic'. Which was good because I couldn't find any 'marine paint' in my 'landlocked' state!!! The best tip I got was to not just use the paint immediately after mixing because it's super runny. I saw a video which said to 'mix, wait 10 mins, stir for 2 mins, wait 10 more mins, stir for 2 mins' then start painting. That waiting period really made it go on more like regular paint. The only bad part with using this product is the 'fumes' - they are HORRIBLE!!! We wore mask, had fans setup but still had to go outside for fresh air. We put on 2 coats today & will come back once the place airs out to put another coat. Thanks for your video. It was super helpful & have me the courage to even attempt this!!! Your prep-work on cleaning & sanding was REALLY helpful. I forgot to tape the walls before starting but I can paint over those mistakes 😜.
