The interesting thing with California laws is that they do inadvertently protect people in other states, too. California's market is so large that product makers will comply with CA law to get access to that market. Now, the manufacturer can legally either a) have two different product lines - one for CA and one for the rest of the US market - or b) have a single product line for the entire US market and make sure what's required for CA consumers is applied to the entire market. Option B tends to be cheaper and thus is the option generally chosen.
@omi._.jalaloАй бұрын
With software stuff it's easier to have two products
@ShermTank7272Ай бұрын
That mostly applies to physical goods, since mass-producing items requires a lot of infrastructure, and having two or more separate manufacturing orders/contracts for versions of essentially the same product would carry a higher production cost. By contrast, software products can be infinitely mass-produced for nearly free (only server and power costs) after their initial development and can easily be adapted based on the region their customers are in.
@moonman239Ай бұрын
@@ShermTank7272 Good point, but t still takes more time to code up region-specific behavior than to apply the same behavior across all regions. So there is stil an added cost to region specificity, question is whether that added cost is now worth the benefits.

If one state like CALIFORNIA forces them to have the button they most likely will just have it available on the browser in general. The thing is, if California mandates it, companies aren't going to bother distributing a California-variant and a non-California-variant, especially since people would be able to just go download the California-variant anyway. Actually, the GDPR, which mandates cookie banners, does require opting out to be the default and no more difficult than opting in. Some providers just don't comply. IAB was found guilty of not properly complying with this a few years ago. IAB is used by giants like Google and Microsoft. A court in Ireland ruled that ALL data collected over the last three years was illegally gathered and had to be deleted, on top of paying a hefty fine.

1. Do not track flags are bad for privacy. They are usually ignored by websites and further used for fingerprinting. 2. Privacy badger is bad because it tries to change canvas a bit because that can be used to fingerprint but can actually reduce security due to the way it is done. (Edit) 3. Don't use google chrome if you care about privacy. It has plenty of telemetry that extensions won't stop. Use ungoogled chromium or brave browser or a firefox fork (base or librewolf are recommended) with the ublock origin extension.
