Thank you for your great video! our 10 month old barks all the time we're out, I give him a kong but a soon as hes cleaned it out he gets anxious and barks so i try and get back before hes finished it usually within an hour, if hes still busy with the treat he usually wont acknowledge me which is good but I feel the kong is just a distraction and not actually getting to dealing with his anxiety. He is getting better at being more independent when about the house I get him to sit on his own rather than on my lap all the time, ive started doing the 5 minutes at a time and building etc yesterday was good but today wasnt as promising, you say in the video about it taking time and having good and bad days which gives me confidence he will get there eventually 🤞 he also sleeps in his crate at night but on the sofa during the day , I found he prefers being out of the crate when left alone , but is distracted by passers by that he sees from our window!

What should my family do to stop the reactions when I leave the room as even when he’s not alone, he will cry at the door and has no interest in whose in the room with him. I’ve literally watched all of your videos in the last 24 hours in preparation for picking up our puppy in February (and they’ve all been super helpful so thank you! A quick question though - this is mainly about relieving anxiety but is there anything we can do as soon as we bring him home to actually prevent the separation anxiety from developing in the first place?
@lennysixdachshunds1069
@lennysixdachshunds1069 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Bel! My recommendation is don’t try leaving him too early. That is where people fail. They start trying to leave pup too early and cause the anxiety. If you can give it a couple weeks and then start to work on separating yourselves from him to rest etc. 💜 you can start following my separation anxiety video tips once he’s been there a few weeks and settled. I tend to wait til they’re house trained as a good cue it’s time to start being a bit more distant x

Thanks for this video. I have a 9 yr old corgi/dachshund (Dobby) and last year we got our smooth haired dachshund puppy (Kingsley) who just turned 1 last week. Our little Kingsley adores Dobby but Dobby just tolerates him. Kingsley can be quite obnoxious to be fair. Kingsley has SA with us and even moreso with Dobby. I’m not sure how to go about training with this situation. They both feed off each other and now I feel like I have two highly anxious doggies and have no idea what to do other than hire a professional to help with the training but even then it’s hard to figure out what type is best (in home, classes, boarding, behaviorist, etc) whew! Any tips would be great!

You’re so right! Working with two dogs is a lot tougher and actually it’s usually best to get in a behaviourist so they can diagnose who is starting the issue so you can focus on them and the other will follow. So I’d definitely recommend getting at least one session with a behaviourist so you can understand the situation better. Are you in the UK? If so pop to this website and find your local behaviourist www.abtcouncil.org.uk/clinical-animal-behaviourists.html

Hi Lenny, You should see if making a calendar with photos of your cute dogs would sell enough to make a profit. I have two miniature Dachshunds, a 10 lb. Roan Piebald Dapple Blaze Smooth Hair, and a 17 lb. Brown Merle with roan nose and feet Dapple wire hair. Have you had to diet a Dachshund? My 17 lb. Needs to diet to 12 pounds in. Hey!! Yes dieting is easy with the cucumber diet. Half your dogs meal intake and fill it out with cucumber. So for example if they usually eat 70g per meal only feed them 35g kibble and 35g of cucumber. Do this to get them to the weight you need and then slowly increase their food back up til they remain a stable weight xxx

My mini dachshund is 6 months old, and I can't figure out if he has separation issues or not. When I'm in the house he'll sit and wait outside the bathroom door for me, or at the bottom of the stairs, and will bark when he initially realises he can't see me. But then he settles himself and will stay quiet. When I leave the house, he'll bark and cry for the first few minutes, but again he then just goes to his bed and settles on his bed and falls asleep or plays with a toy (I have a camera to watch him lol). Is it normal for him to bark initially and then self-soothe and get over it?
@lennysixdachshunds1069

Yes absolutely. They bark to call out to see if you’ll come back. Once they realise you won’t they calm. The quicker they calm the more trust they having you’re coming back :) so you’re doing a great job gaining his trust I’d say :)

My puppy is 15 weeks old and I leave him with a kong or lickimat, he still cries relentlessly. I leave the radio on, make sure he has had a wee and a poo before I leave him, and that he has had a runaround. I feel like I'm never going to be able to go to the shops without him crying his heart out! I've tried to build it up but it feels impossible. If I go take a shower he's howling by the end of the 10 mins! He gets serious FOMO as well.
@lennysixdachshunds1069
@lennysixdachshunds1069 3 жыл бұрын
Hey! You’ve got to start with tiny steps like the video says and also try not to be frustrated even though I totrally understand it is. 15 weeks old is SO young. I know you say you’ve tried to build it up but at 15 weeks you must’ve only had him for less than 2 months so it’s not been as long as it may seem. Please do watch the video and go back to very basics from the beginning working on just being the other side of the room or the door and not for as long as it takes for him to be howling. Expecting to leave him with a kong at 15 weeks without putting a lot of ‘frustrating i know’ time in just won’t cut it. You’ve got this!!! But you need to be patient and start from the beginning very slowly, or you’ll just make the task harder on yourself and him 💜 All the best! X

Thanks for replying :) yes been trying to leave him alone for little bits since about week 10 (even if it’s just going to the loo for 2 min!) sometimes he takes it sometimes he doesn’t. It’s good to know that you think he’s still really young as I thought he was supposed to be ok with it by now :)

He’s still a baby and clearly you’re doing your best so please don’t stress :) try to bring in the same room as him and popping him on his bed (or in his crate if he’s crate trained) with a treat and just sit the other side of the room. Then try doing the same about 1-2 minutes in walk out the room and back in. It’s about starting to loosen that ‘I must follow you around human’ approach lol 😂

So we're dog sitting a friends dachshund for the next two weeks . And because the dogs only familar with one person in the house and is in a completely foreign place to it. it is not settling at all. It barks and whimpers just from people leaving the room it barks and howls continously if two or more people leave the house at a time. Now this morning they left for work at five in the morning and I had to sit with the dog on the floor for about 20 minutes to get it calm enough to stop whimpering and barking. It had actually been doing this for nearly an hour from around 4am but it somehow only woke me up nearly 44 minutes into that hour. Any advice for this kind of scenario? My mother's struggling allot with the dog and I think it's probably picking up on that too.

Unfortunately Keith, I can say from experience with a neighbours dog. Leaving them outside does not resolve separation anxiety. The puppy next door to us is left outside at all hours and at 11 months old still spends the entire time screaming and wrecking their space. I’m assuming you live in the US where it is more common to have large spaces of land for the dog to investigate etc.
