Great video on crate training for dachshunds. As you said, it's so important for them to be happy in their crates in case they need bed rest. Our 4 love their crates and sleep with the doors open because they're all potty trained. We've had 2 of the 4 since they were pups and at night they would cry if they wanted out but paw at the door if they needed to go wee. We just kind of figured it out after a few nights. The adopted adults are retired breeding dogs and were just used to crates. Now they all roam free and it's cute how we find out who likes to bunk up together--sometimes all 4 are in one!! Crates can be a great thing if used properly, I think. Loved this video and your tips. 👍👍🐶❤️

5:01 Something that really helped me, if you can get the crate on the same level with the bed it helps. I put my baby's crate on a chair and push it right up by my pillow. It helped immensely. I let my wiener dog fall asleep in my arms in the bed and then slide them into the crate and close the door. It's a smooth transition. Also, when she naps throughout the day I always take her to the crate but leave the door open so she gets used to sleeping/waking up in there.

Hi Lenny…I have been a fan awhile now and really appreciate your informative videos! I am picking up my Standard Smooth Dachshund puppy “Hildy” in two weeks and found this refresher both timely and informative. As I have my home office set up as a kitten/puppy room already, the pen training topic would be great because I plan to merge the crate and pen as one contiguous space that can keep Hildy safe when I cannot have eyes on her . Incidentally, I obtained two Siamese kittens three weeks ago and then the Dachshund breeder surprised me with an offer of a puppy a bit sooner than I had expected. So the three babies will be raised together! Thank you for your generous spirit and all the great information you share. Hugs, Michael Albuquerque New Mexico USA

Hi, hope you’re well. We picked up our 8 week old puppy, Chuck, on Wednesday and he was absolutely fine in his crate in the day and overnight (with it locked) on the same day and the following. Which was great as we just thought he’d naturally taken to it and our positive reinforcement to further encourage him, which allowed us to focus on toilet training. We have the same small crate downstairs in the living quarters and bring it up to our bedroom with us. However last night and tonight the crying has started. We have been following ‘The Happy Puppy Handbook’ also, which advocates letting the puppy cry it out but we just can’t lie there and hear him be in so much distress. We managed 20 mins tonight and it was just awful. The only thing that calms him down is like what you’ve mentioned, putting our hands in the crate and being beside him. We’re going to try your method as it’s definitely something that suits both me and Andy, and hopefully also Chuck. Just hope he gets used to it soon and I have 2 weeks off work to really keep going with the day/night training. Thank you for this video X

That book doesn’t sound great to be honest. It’s very old school to let them cry it out and usually creates a anxious dog whilst breaking that initial bond you want with your doggy in the first few weeks 💜 sounds like you’re doing amazing to go and seek more advice to find what works for you. Keep at it. Honestly he’ll be comforted by you and once he’s able to do walkies even more so they just snooze the night away 🤣

Thank you for your video! We are getting a dachshund puppy in 1.5 months and after reading numerous books and watching numerous videos all insisting on cry it out method I started to freak out. I could not do it with my daughter and I don't think I can do it with my puppy either. It was so reassuring to hear from you that a puppy should not be ignored and that it's OK to offer some comfort. I feel better now.

Great video. We're semi crate training with our new pup. Have a crate in the bedroom, a larger pen in the lounge downstairs and a smaller pen in my office. The pens both have quite a few toys in them and we usually feed her in them so that she associates them with nice happy places. The main reason for the pens though is to stop the risk of chewing bad stuff like charger cables, which was a big problem with our first pup and our current pup is even more of a chewer.

Thanks! The pens also help to give our older Dachshund some space as she's finding a puppy to be a bit exhausting. She'll get used to it though. Just need to get through toilet training now, something that Dachshunds are incredibly stubborn at, in my experience! Greetings from Lowriders btw. :D

Crate training is the only way to go. The first week my Roxie slept in the bed with me. Luckily, I wasn’t working because not much sleep happened. She was 7 weeks and she took little power naps then wanted to play then go potty. So what I did was when she woke up we went straight to the bathroom on a pee pad with me. And then I would play with her until she was worn out... then repeat. After a month or so she started getting the hang of it. I also had a dollar store clock in her crate with her. Her crate is and was very cozy. Mattress, baby blanket, little toy. Plus, I left the tv on with the timer so it would turn off after 2 hours. I always still to this day cover her crate with a blanket.

Wow a month! That’s a long time 🙈 I think in future you’d benefit from not playing with your next pup when they unsettle in the night. Just toilet with no interaction and back to bed. As mine sleep straight through after a couple days! X

Thank you for this video! I am picking up my mini dachshund in 8 weeks and crate training will be one of my top priorities. I want to buy two crates and make them identical - one for sleeping in my bedroom and one in the living room in a play pen. However, I live in an apartment and want to setup his playpen to have a crate with a grass patch for when I am at work. When I am home, both crates will be opened at all times including his playpen for him to access whenever he pleases but I want to have his crate closed at night when he is sleeping in my room and his play pen closed while I am at work. Should I put more focus on crate training him or focus more on getting him use to the playpen? I hope that makes sense! Looking forward to your response. 😊

We have just brought home a 9 week old standard and are trying to crate train her. First night was pretty terrible as we broke rule 1 (tried to let her cry it out). In the end, I sat beside her until she fell asleep (this is in our bedroom). We did only bring her home at 6pm that night, so it was understandable she was unsettled. I think this has led to a slightly less positive association with it. However, since then, she has been very good, only waking up once or twice as she's been uncovered and cold. We have been taking it up & down stairs as you suggest....and trying to encourage her to go in and be comfortable with doing so. We have two issues with this being a success though. 1) Getting her to stay in when it's time for bed. I don't want to break rule 1 again, so have been trying to let her fall asleep downstairs before taking her up. Might need to re-think that one. 2), we have a 13 year old Dacsy too, who has been a lone dog now for a couple of years (we lost our other one aged 15). She also sleeps in our bedroom, but we want her to have her own space and quiet time so that she doesn't become annoyed at puppy! Is there anything you can suggest to help? I know it will come....it's only been 6 nights. Just wondering if there's anything to help speed up the process a little?? Great video, thank you for taking the time to do this!
@lennysixdachshunds1069

You’re doing amazing 6 nights in to have that much settle is magic! You can close the door at night and try to reassure her through you hand being near the crate and see if that stops the crying. You’re already heading in the right direction! So it won’t be long at all til she sees the crate as her little bedroom xxx
@mka70
@mka70 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you for replying so quickly! It's good to know we're doing most things correctly. I'm hoping small tweaks will work, so that I can settle on a definite routine for her! When I move my hand away and close the door, she wakes up and starts to bite the bars and cry. I also try standing up next to the crate, so she's not tempted to reply to much on my hand being there. Mostly though, it's a case of plonking her back in over and over and stroking her until she gets sleepy! Eventually we will let the two sleep together, when Puppy (Coco) is a bit less bouncy! I've subscribed to your channel and love all your videos. Your dogs look amazing! :)

Thank you so so much for your informative videos. We just brought home an 8 week old dachshund exactly 1 week ago and started to introduce the crate during the day this past weekend. Our pup sleeps through the night every night which is so great! We are trying to get her more comfortable with going in there during the day. She pops in every so often during the day and we reward her for that. With my boyfriend and I both working from home full time during the pandemic, I’m worried she’s going to be too attached to us during the day. How often do you recommend having the puppy go into the crate each day to build up some separation? She always follows be around and I’m worried she’s going to have separation anxiety from me. My boyfriend thinks I’m over reacting because she’s a baby still but I just want to know that I’m going to be doing everything right.

Hey! Have you watched my separation anxiety video? :) as a puppy you should let them follow you around initially to create that bond. Naturally they will start to create space between you over time. And then you can start to encourage space. You will find the separation anxiety video useful x

Hi do you have any tips for bringing home two pups from the same litter? What do you recommend for crate training and house training for two pups? Should I try to designate separate crates for them and prevent them from sharing crates? Thanks!
@lennysixdachshunds1069
@lennysixdachshunds1069 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Peter! Firstly you need to Google littermate syndrome as most breeders won’t sell two puppies from the same litter because of it. Secondly a crate together will be absolutely fine as they will have been together from day one :) But you must make sure they have individual training, play and walks so that you reduce the risk of littermate syndrome 💜

Hello Lenny! I have watched several videos of yours already and they are all so helpful so thank you for that! :) We will be getting a miniature longhaired dachshund in a few weeks. We already have an older dog who is a small maltese mix with a mild sweet personality. We do not use a crate for her at all and our goal for the puppy is for her to also be trustworthy enough to sleep without a crate. We have a play pen already that we will use during the day while we are gone. In your opinion, should we use the play pen as a place to sleep while the puppy is still growing up? Or would it be better to get a crate separate for sleeping? Thanks so much!

Hi Lenny, we have a 3yr old mini and just added a 9 week old pup (2 weeks ago). I have 4 weeks off work to work with them both now. Night times are good. I have a crate in the bedroom and in the kitchen for the pup. Older dog just gets into his bed now. Pup is fine in crate at night with door closed and just wales for the toilet. I'm finding more difficult during the day with the crate training as pup will not go in there on his own free will unless I pit food in there and then he is straight out but he is happy to sit in the older dogs bed in the kitchen on his own for an hr. I wont be able to leave them not crated so how can I get him to use the crate more rather than the older dogs bed. (The older dog isnt in the bed at the time of pup being in there) Thanks.

Keep doing what you’re doing. Try adding something that lasts longer to the crate like frozen food. Make sure the crate is comfy, maybe try adding a heated pad if it’s potentially a bit colder than the big dog bed. Also could be worth adding a blanket to the big dog bed so it gets everyone’s scent on and then move it to the crate as it could be comfort of your other dogs smell helping the puppy feel at ease :) Hope that helps x

Hello Lenny my name is Rebecca, I just got a mini doxie a few months ago. I’m having a hard time potty training my puppy. He’s getting better but he still has accidents in the house and when’s he’s in his crate he pees in it and he ends up drinking it🤢. He used to cry but the only way I can get him to stop is covering his cage with a blanket. When I tell him to go potty sometimes he will but sometimes as soon as I bring him in he goes potty in the house. How long does it take to potty train them? He’s a smooth haired and his name is Toby. I also have a hard time leaving him without him cry at the top of his lungs. How do get him to stop crying and going potty in his cage?

Hi Lenny! This video was super helpful, so thank you! We have an 11 yr old boy and will be getting a 10 week girl in about 1 week!! Our boy does no sleep in a crate and has a bed in our room. I definitely want to crate train our new puppy when she comes. Any suggestions or tips on that? If we leave them both home, with the puppy in the crate and our boy not in one, I feel like he may cause a lot of distress to the puppy since he doesn’t do well when we leave. Is it possible to crate train when the older one doesn’t get crated? Is it even worth crate training if the older boy is not crate trained? Appreciate any suggestions! Thank you!

Hey Monica! You can absolutely still crate train a puppy. I would start working on your older dogs issues ASAP as it would be great to have them ironed out or working on before pup arrives. Every dog is different so if you find the puppy is getting really distressed being away from your older dog you will have to find what works for you 💙

I would suggest they’re very different to a spaniel. Somewhat opposite traits. Spaniels are very people pleasers in behaviour. Also fairly independent. As long as you go into it knowing the dog will unlikely like being alone or leaving your side and will be barky and ignorant you’ll be fine 🤣

I really want to train my recent boyfriends wild miniature dachshunds …. they pee and poop on the floor of his New York City apartment and bark at absolutely everything they simply do not listen. I have always had extremely well behaved pets and we did crate train too! Yellow labs are easier though but you also have to have the mindset of being persistent and in charge so they have a shot at learning… I’m curious if you could still train 6 year old stubborn dachshunds?
@lennysixdachshunds1069
@lennysixdachshunds1069 Жыл бұрын
Absolutely! Especially with the house training. As it’s an apartment it’s likely that in the early years he just didn’t take them out enough. Set up a faux grass toilet in the bathroom or balcony if there is a safe one to use and close the door. Every hour take them to the bathroom stand in there with them and ask them to go wee wee. Once they do their business give lots and lots of praise. The bathroom will become the equivalent of a back yard. If they struggle with this you may need to take them outside every hour to get their bowel moving. Again heavily praise. The trick is the cue word ‘mine is go wee wee’ or ‘hurry up’ they will start to learn to go to toilet on cue. Which makes it a lot easier x

Crate training is important for various reasons. They’re not crating at mine for work or sleep. But they are crate trained early in life. During early stages they can harm themselves by chewing or eating things they shouldn’t so sleeping in a crate aka when you’re asleep too is a helpful to keep them safe. Some dogs find having a smaller safe place more settling long term than free access to the house. But the most important is this breed have a 1 in 4 chance of IVDD which if they get it requires 6 weeks of crate rest. If they’re not alresdy used to and crate trained they can be extremely hard to crate rest and extremely stressed. Which could cause serious damage or elongate the healing process x

Hey! The idea is to pop your fingers into the crate when they become unsettled and it should help them not get stressed however if they become stressed you will have to find another way to work around them. Every dog is different. Most pups are fairly content with the door closed at night as they’re exhausted and your right next to them x but if your particular dog or puppy is easily stressed it’ll be about finding what works for them x

With many of mine they sleep in the bed from day one. I actually find they don't go to the toilet in the bed and they tend to fuss when they need to go, which of course wakes you up much easier. So if you are happy for them to be in your bed... Put a waterproof sheet on just in case but just start from day one. Just make sure if you feel them wake up and start fussing you run them down to the toilet. You can then use the crate as just a space thats available to them throughout the day if they want it :)

So we found not having the ramp to the bed until they’re older meant they asked to get down when they needed to go xx

For dachshunds who 1 in 4 get IVDD and require strict crate rest getting them used to a crate young as their safe space is VERY important. Otherwise they have the stress of disability alongside being enclosed for the first time and if they aren’t crate rested properly 1in3 will relapse. If you watch my video I do clearly state you leave the door open for a long time before reaching them it’s ok for the door to be closed. Only once they live their space.

@@lennysixdachshunds1069 Thank you for your reply! While I understand that a crate can be required for this very specific purpose (although I think there are better, more comfortable options like building a enclosed little area in your living space which is at least open at the top and spacious enough to accomodate the dog bed and water bowl without the danger that the bowl gets knocked over), I get the impression that many people use the crate to lock their dogs up during the night (so they cannot follow them to the bedroom?), when they leave the house or when they just want them out of the way. And I think that is terrible. Besides, I would be worried that the dogs might hurt their paws when they accidentally get stuck between the bars. And no one can tell me that dogs feel safe and comfortable in those cages. They might accept it due to their sweet nature, but I'm sure they would prefer other options. They do need a space where they can retreat to, which is sheltered and comfortable, but a crate is not a retreat, let alone sheltered. A dog in a crate is vulnerable as they are trapped AND exposed and that is not a desirable situation for any living creature. There are such amazing dog beds available, like little soft dens or tents etc., which owners can offer to their dogs (and let them decide whether they want use it or not).

@lennysixdachshunds1069 3 ай бұрын
We will have to agree to disagree :) as I know of thousands of dogs that love their crates and with the right association training never disliked or gave in to liking their crates. I have crates set around my house open to my dogs and they often choose them to go snuggle in. I also have beds called ‘sausage pits’ which are little soft snuggle beds that they can choose and sometimes they choose them too. With crate rest. My dog Eva, who had spinal surgery, actually did not enjoy an open top pen. She would dangerously try and and jump out of it. We did initially set up a pen like a babies playpen for her. Once we switched over to a large crate because jumping up wasn’t an option she rested well and has now recovered. Personally my dogs all sleep in my bed with an option to choose their crates and sometimes they do, sometimes they don’t. So I am not an advocate for locking a dog up all day. But I am also balanced and understand that dogs do enjoy a crate as a safe place / their own little bedroom and the fact the crate has a top compared to a pen (which I still consider a form of crating) is really no different at all. Not everyone however is in a position to have their dog in their bedroom. Maybe they have a mezzanine bedroom, a bedroom too small for a pen, a child that sleeps in their bed, a dog which struggles with their continence. And leaving their dog in another room with open access especially a young dog could result in dangerous eating / chewing by said dog so a crate or pen maybe the safest option for the dog. The world and its options and needs are not black and white and thankfully people watching my videos are almost certainly doing crate training for the right reasons and because they care about their dog so are educating themselves online on their options and the best ways to safely and kindly implement things

I have 40 years old and I have dogs since I was a baby I NEVER used a crate and if you need to use one do me a favor don't have a dog because you are a horrible human being. Just love our dog the same way they love you. Believe me you dog will learn anything without CRATE!!!!!!!

Hi Carolina, I understand your adversity towards a crate but actually for dachshunds in particular it’s a very important part of their life. I’m sure if you actually watched the video before commenting? But 1 in 4 dachshunds will get a disease called IVDD which requires them to crate rest for 6 weeks. If they have never been in a crate or had one around before it is extremely stressful for them to achieve that rest, but without strict crate rest they will very likely not have a chance of recovery. This is why it’s very important to at least have a crate around with the door open to allow them to become familiar With it throughout their lives. I don’t appreciate you telling me or anything they’re a horrible human being for doing something that long term would be advisable to reduce possible stress for the dog.
