How to: Remove 84-88 Toyota Pickup/4Runner Gauge Cluster

Today I’m going to show how to remove the Gauge Cluster found on 1984-1988 Toyota Pickups (second generation) and 1984-1989 4Runners (first generation). The only tool you'll need is a #2 Phillips Head Screw Driver.

@@6thGearGarage I have a question unrelated to Toyotas, but I'm hoping you can help. I woke up to tree sap on my car and I'm not sure what products to use to get it off, have you ever had to remove tree sap?

@@Brofatinatat There are specialty products out there, but some that you already have may work, including: rubbing alcohol, goo gone, wd40, or even a little gas. Just be sure to wash the area afterwards with some dish soap to remove any contaminated/oils left behind and re-coat the area with wax.

Good suggestion on pushing the speedo cable from inside the engine bay, to get room to pull it out of the cluster. I replaced the cluster with the SR5 cluster years ago. Very nice upgrade to have the tachometer. Today I was going to remove the cluster to fix an intermittent temp gauge, but had a problem getting the cable off. So, with this bit of wisdom, I will try removing it again. A common issue is a flaky temp gauge. Sometimes it goes to half way, when cold, and tapping the cluster brings it back to normal. Toyota is know for poor grounds, and I just need to take the cluster out, and check the grounds.

I had the temp sensor on the engine go bad, but my original gauge is still good. Eventually I also want to swap in a SR5 cluster w/ tach.

I have an 87 and my temp and fuel gauge don’t work. I’ve checked all my grounds that I can find but still no luck. I took both gauges out and cleaned them and when installing them the fuel gauge would go up to half then back down and never came back up. Any advice?

@@bryansandifer3792 Hey Bryan. I no longer have my 86 4Runner, but I still love these old Toyotas. I would suggest that you test the gauges. If you don't have one, service manuals can still be had. Try Ebay. Both sensors have test procedures. I've used a 12vdc battery and a variable resistor to check the gauges in the cluster. The temp sensor is like a variable resistor, as the resistance changes with temperature, so it can ge tested with an ohmmeter. The fuel gauge is in the tank of course, but you can access the wiring that goes to it. Good luck.

The 91 dash will be different, but the rest of the removal will be similar.

I’ve got an 87 xtra cab and the top right side won’t come loose. All the screws are out but it feels that something is holding on.

If you removed the cluster surround, can you look down through the windshield to see what is hanging up and keeping the cluster from coming out? Maybe the wiring harness?

Looking at doing a bulb replacement. Some of the cluster lights are burnt out. Are all the black tabs I saw in the video on the back of the cluster the bulbs?

Yes, all those black tabs are the bulbs. They twist and then come out

From my 1980? yes, it was actually a lot easier. The speedometer cable can be unhooked by reaching under the dash, so there is more room to see & work.

Maybe you can push the cable through the firewall a little from the engine bay side to give it some more slack.

What all extra would you need to do an sr5 cluster swap

I have everything for the swap, just don't know when I'll get around to doing it and making the video. Most important thing is to replace the original oil pressure sensor with one from an SR5 or else you'll fry the oil pressure gauge in the SR5 cluster. Thank you. I've actually got an 85 sr5 4runner that I bought 3 years ago and had a big wind storm come through were I live and a tree fell on and crushed the whole back half of it. So I bought an 87 base 4runner both of them are 22re. The 87 I got for 300 bucks no drivetrain so I'm dealing everything into it from my 85 including sas.

Insanely frustrating that the 4th gen all you have to do is remove is the gauge surround while on the 5th gen you have to remove basically the entire lower dash just to get to the gauge cluster

That was back in 2012 I believe... Southington Off Road. It's no Wellsville, but it's a good day trip. And if your rig breaks down there, it won't get torched lol. So that's a plus. I wanna see if you do those LEDs.
