How to Remove a 4l60e Transmission from 2001 Chevy S10 2wd

In this video, I remove the transmission from my Mailman's S10. The truck was stuck in 3rd gear and had some other transmission problems. Dropping the pan revealed some wear and tear so we are going to give it a fresh rebuild and hopefully correct the issue.

Ha ha, your instructions are the best I've seen, I'm a ASE CERTIFIED mechanic, I own a beautiful S-10, with 115000 miles on it, I lost 3rd & 4th gear out of the blue, now I drive it at 40 to 50 miles per, my engine is so damn strong to hold up to the day abuse driving in 2nd gear every where, i don't go on the freeway, but pretty much drive it everywhere,it's exactly like the I one your working on, mines white with the chrome rails on the bed, why did my tranny fail at 115000 miles, I'm 73 yr old and my Mechanic day have since past, I was a dealership drive train specialist, but my brother told me you have to pull the engine, thanks for the lesson, I was a Ford dealership specialist, doesn't help with an S-10!

The coupler piece on the drive shaft is called the carrier bearing just so you know 😉. Keep wrenching along bud!

Man I’m in the middle of doing a V8 swap in my 99 Sonoma and I thought the trans would have would have had a inspection cover like yours but it doesn’t . I thought I’d separate the motor and transmission for the ease of lifting the motor out . But I’ll have to remove the rad support and ac condenser. Great vid

Btw for the shift selection wires the are glued in on the side of the trans they can be easily disconnected by using a heat gun to melt the glue. I just did that to my blazer.

At 9:35 when you mention the "couple on the back", what size are those bolts? I know they take a 15mm socket, and are about 2.5 inches long. My truck is missing one and I need to order a replacement.

I think they might go through the oil pan right? I’d just try a junkyard or maybe take the other to the hardware store and match it up. Parts department could probably print you a diagram if they’re available.

If you're talking about the bell housing bolts, your best bet is a crazy long extension like 3 ft with a swivel 18mm on a 1/2" impact gun. Best way to reach it.

Yeah should be the same. There's a diff clutch stack internally for the 3-4 clutches but I don't think any of that matters. It's the same trans.

Absolutely. You've got to remove the front driveshaft as well as the transfer case. Not too much different but there are extra steps.

the hardest part of the entire job is the bell housing bolts. I didn't see that part in here.

Way easier if you undo the transmission mount get that right the fuck out of the way support the back of the motor along with the transmission and let it all tilt back the use the longest extension you can find and run them out with a big half inch wratchet or air gun. I believe one of the top bell bolts is easier from the top... I can do these in my sleep I had a 93 silverado that loved eating up transmissions (which also runs a 4l60e) so I had enough and put a 5 speed in instead. Way more power and control over the truck and no more doing a Trans every time you haul something bigger than a dresser. Lol

Definitely best way right there yeah. Easy is taking them out while the truck is up on a lift. It's a different job on your back lol Bet the 5 speed in there is fun! What trans did you slap in there?

One thing I didn't see is how to reach the top bell housing bolts. We have a 2000 model with a 4.3 hooked to a 4L60e and it seems impossible to reach the top bolts.

You need like a 3 ft extension with a swivel 18mm socket on the end. Impact gun is the easiest. They're a huge pain man.

Same here how where you able to remove the top bolts they seem to be to clise to the body woth no space for tools. Dis you need to lift the engine?

It's much easier on a lift but if you let the whole engine and tranny hang down it should tilt it enough to get a long extension in there. I've never personally done a 4.3 with a 4l60 but I'm sure it can be done. They're hard to reach on any car. Take exhaust off so motor can tilt back maybe? That's what we do on the 5.3 Silverados

Did I miss something ? When you take the transmission out you have to remove 8 bell housing bolts, I don't see where you did that? The bolt at 11:00 when you are looking at the housing from behind has 4 bolts that are easy to get out. The two "middle" bolts on top you have to crawl on top of the engine and look for them but they do come out. The one on the top passenger side is not all that bad either. That leaves the bolt on the top left (11:00) that is sandwiched between a metal fin on the housing, the cab body and a shield of some sort, all with about 1/16" clearance or less. Even if you could get a wrench or socket in there, you can't move it because of the metal fin being right next to the tool's handle. Tell me the time slot where you did that, because I don't think you can remove a transmission with 7 out of 8 bolts removed???

I probably didn't show it because it's probably so hard to do let alone get a video of me doing it. You got to let the transmission hang I usually use a super long extension with a deep swivel 15 mm on my impact. That top bolt is not easy but it's possible
