Turned out, the IP was full of rust and crud from sitting for many years. I took the top off the pump, there was a linkage inside that was glued in place with the crud. I moved that linkage back and forth enough times to free it up, put the top back on the pump... Problem fixed.

Hey Mike I see your about the only active KZbin still workin on these old idi motors I have a 1986 6.9 Idi n/a and the injection pump went bad and I got a reman for it and put it on and and now I can't get it to start unless I roll start in in 3rd gear going 10-15 mph and it revs like your holding it at 1/2 throttle and smokeing like crazy and when you turn the key off it continues to run blowing blue smoke I believe it's trying to run away when I turn the key off but it has an electric fuel pump on it and when I was bleeding the injector lines I didn't even have to crank it over it's like the fuel pump was bypassing the injection pump any help would be apreciated thanks!!!

Hey Mike you mentioned that there are a few things different on IP from an automatic to a manual. I just did a swap on my IP ON my auto 7.3idi from a working parts truck 7.3idi manual 2wd. Both trucks are 1990 f250 7.3idi but one is a 4x4 automatic and one is 2wd manual (part truck). What do I have to do to make this work? Thx for your time, your awesome!

Thomas Harding the e40d automatic trucks will have a throttle positioning sensor and bracket on the side of the injection pump. there is also a little actuator that is held on with set screws to the pump shaft if you're swapping pumps those pieces need to be swapped over as well

Hey mike have a question seems to me you know what your doing on these old engines I have a 7.3 idi that I’m working on for a guy that I’m in the process of buying there’s fuel going to the injection pump but nothing to the injection lines how do I clean the pump just to hear it run if you know how thanks

Logan Peterson try firing it off a starting aid and see if smoke comes out tailpipe that means its getting fuel. Can't really test it off a n engine

Ya I ended up having to switch the injection pump on it off an old 7.3 idi parts motor and it runs great now turns out the truck had been sitting 10 years and the old pump had lots of rust in it

i like how these motors have a hidden dummy way to take off injection pumps like why bother timing it when you can remove the front cover

bryan allen. Well settings the gears in alignment is just static time so it'll run but to dynamic time basically as close to tuning it you can get you need a timing meter

Will this work even if not installing the same pump back in. For example upgrading to the r&d rd2-90 pump or will it need timing adjustment after a bigger pump install?

this video is for removal purposes only yes if you get a bigger pump like the 90 pump you will need to time it.

really anytime you swap an injection pump it should be dynamic timed with a ferret meter. But the special meter and timing light is pricey

Hi Mike. When you are reinstalling the pump, does it mate up to that gear in only one way. or is it possible to reinstall it with it off by a third? IOW: you took out three bolts. Is there some other sort of dowel or something that makes you get it oriented back the same way when reinstalling, or can you reinstall it, with #1 bolt in #3 hole?

it is keyholed so if you didnt pull the gear you just gotta line up the keyhole and your golden

say have you ever run used motor oil I've tried everything dude this shity ass fuel we have here in Texas I run a gallon of used motor oil every time I fuel have you ever tried that or any know anything about it I'm working on a system to clean the oil but I don't know the worst case scenarios eight miles a gallon I averaged 14.5 at Chevron not all Chevrons are created equal though Exxon is pretty steady at 13 thing is I've got a good relay and glow plugs so it don't kick on every time I shut it off with this fuel it won't freaking start after it gets hot I put a gallon of motor oil in the tank Wawa problem solved thing is it $9 a gallon I can't afford motor oil so I put used oil in

if you're running used motor you got a really really filter it well and unfortunately some core buyers will reject your core if they find out you've been running it because it's hard on the pump head. I run diesel Kleen in my fuel systems

Ground box end thinner and ground open end sides farther in to get behind pump easier
